Cant see how it would be an accident as the gun guard had a loaded magazine but does not have a round in the chamber. You have to make ready the weapon which is not usually done by accident

Someone could have threatened with a deadly weapon and the escalation of force meant they were shot dead... Well, you don't shoot someone to injure them anyway

Actually you do, which is why the US Military changed their rounds to 5 1/2's. They believe that if you injure someone on the battle field then it ties up more men than if you shoot them dead.

I get the logic, however if it was me i would rather shoot to kill TBH

Certainly do.

And they're to hand, pretty much all the time? I was just trying to figure if everyone was walking around with weapons and how accessible they were? Fair do's. I suppose you can never account for someone flipping out like that though :o

During my time in we had a QM who shot his BM and a QM who shot himself when on watch.

Jst been speaking to an ex-submariner who has been informed that the upper deck officer shot the weapons officer and the marine officer.

TDD can you explain the job titles? Think thats the sentry, the weapons engineer officer and the Chief Engineer? N

Perhaps it's like the USS Alabama, someone wanted to nuke some rogue nation and the other didn't.

On the other hand it's more likely about some tart or other because most seemingly inexplicable acts are.

more than likely (just by going what you have said) that the armed sentry has shot the Weapons Engineering Officer (WEO) and the Marine Engineering officer (MEO)..

they are head of departments and are the same rank as the Executive officer who is 2nd in command.. all are Leuitentant Commanders (LT CDRs)

This could have been thedelldays if he was on duty when we went 2-0 down to MK Dons. Luckily he was sat in front of his computer rather than a weapons arsenal and all we ended up with was a post about the play offs.

When QM I carried a Browning 9mm as did the BM. Upper deck sentries carried SA80s.

Was that on the armarni?? Or what ever it was called..!! When they were pretending to have a dual at 10 paces???

Crikey, now your asking. The suicide was deffo a Guzz based towed array Leander and IIRC the shooting was a pompey based 42, but may well have been a Guzz based 21.

I'm pretty sure the 'duel' incident was on a Pompey based Leander, as an old oppo of mine was the Duty PO at the time of the incident. From memory, it was during Xmas leave period, I think on New Year's Eve. They had had a few tinnies (beers) which is a strict no, no when carrying weapons.

I am trying hard now to remember the suicide incident.

I was one of the first Towed Array operators in the RN. My first ship was Lowestoft, when Towed Array was being trialed. I was on her for the first ever operational Towed Array patrol. I seen to recall though that the Leanders were Pompey based (Lowestoft definitely was) and that the subsequent TA Ships, Type 22's, were Guzz based. Their replacements, type 23's, were split between Pompey and Guzz.

For sure, I concur that the QM and BM were always armed with Browning 9mm pistols and the Upper Deck Sentry had an SA80.

N.B. My avatar is the Towed Array (Passive SONAR) crest - which was designed by an AB® called Spider Webb (I was sat next to him as he drew the original draft).
