The Masters

It's that time of the year again, the course looks stunning in HD

The weather is setting up nicely for the weekend

More sub-plots than a Dan Brown novel

Stupidly late nights for golf fans in some parts of the world coming up.

Luke Donald I thought had the best chance of the Brits, but now he's right out of contention to win (silly sod won the Par 3 comp today - nobody has ever won both in the same year in a tournament that is built on it's history)

Poulter has been awful all through the start of season, W******d isn't back to his consistent self yet, Has Tiger taken on board all my tips I gave him? Can Lefty break the habit of a lifetime and win two on the bounce? And was GMac a one trick pony.

No idea but I'm gonna be glued to it all weekend apart from the Saints game Saturday.

Highest European? Donald or Kaymer. Tiger to shock us by getting close and Dustin Johnson to be 3rd time lucky after 2 close calls.

Fair to say I have even less of a clue who is going to win as I have about which horse is going to win the National. However, my medioce selections are :

Hunter Mahan at around 30/1 : Much more consistent this year.

Luke Donald at around 25/1 : Believe Donald is Faldo’s choice of the top European this week so in spite of being dumb enough to win the Par 3 comp ( no idea what that is mind other than the obvious clue in the title ! ) must have a chance.

Ye Yang at around 100/1 : Currently 120's on BF though, seems generous for a player who finished in the top 10 last year.

Steve Marino at around 125/1 and 25/1 for a top 5 finish. 170's on BF.

Stuart Appleby at around 200/1, 275's on BF.

I also like Justin Rose but don't tell Stevo :D

Note that while most bookmakers are now paying the first 5 in golf tournaments for each way bets both Paddy Power and Boylesports are paying the first 6 and still keeping it at 1/4 odds a place.

Also Stan James will refund any losing win bet (as a free bet) on the outright market if Phil Mickelson or Tiger Woods win the Masters.

Otherwise hard to oppose Peter Uihlein as top Amateur. He is the US Amateur champion and in a field of just six he is the stand out though a skinny price at 2.5 on Betfair.

Watching the build up last night on Fox, if there is any "justice" in the world, then young Ishikawa of Japan deserves a top 5 slot.

Last year he won $2mil, this year (as he's now a mature 19 years old) they reckon he could reach $4mil, and he's pledged every dollar of prize money to the Japanese Earthquake/Tsunami disaster fund. (Of course the cynic says that won't have hurt his endorsement income)

Our Golf Soc have set up a sweepstake. You pick 3 groups based on start times as your "Team" and your best 4 players finishing scores are added up, lowest score wins the kitty....

Not that remarkable except - woo hoo first time I've gambled a tenner for 15 years! My picks

Dustin Johnson, Adam Scott, Nick Watney

Kaymer, W******d & Kuchar

Bubba Watson, Paul Casey & Edoardo Molinari

Out of those would pick Scott as an outside each way bet with his new putter. Fancy Casey for a top 10, really want Lee to win but still think Johnson

But that Tiger bloke, watching him goof around bouncing the ball across the pond yesterady - "looks to be in a good place this year"

Well, they're off and running.

And our TV coverage starts today at ......11pm.

FFS that is 7.5 hours AFTER the event started - we have repeats of Super 15 UFC & WWE all day and the golf is then shown for 4 hours tonight. Most annoyed as it's the weekend tomorrow and had planned to put the feet up early evening. grumble groan.

Anyway, nice to see we all picked the early leader, nice start by the European Tour's only living personality transplant donor, Ross Fisher. (He's a very polite gentlemen though and says thankyou a lot)

The Goose makes a good start. He was awful in Scabby Dabby for 3 rounds, had dinner with D_P & AD_Bob and came out the next day firing on all cylinders.

The GF's squeeze Rory gets away well also, damn, there goes any chance of having the sofa until 3am she'll be up cheeering him on as well

& Stevo's Red Barrell gets into red numbers - we're rooting for ya dude

Watneys Red Barrell. A particularly tart bitter on tap at various drinking establishments in the 60s and 70s. Driven underground by the forces of Real Ale, but remembered fondly by those of a certain vintage, for whom it was probably a first experience of under-age boozing.

HTH.

I preferred Star Light.

Great start by Rory. Was entertaining watching the Quiros group over the last few holes. When he's playing well Quiros's grin is something else.

Kaymer just doesn't get Augusta for some reason and Tiger can't putt any more.

Lefty was rubbish but scrambled well, still not sure if I like watching him or not, suppose another miracle shot is on the cards the way he kept not getting his driving right.

We have the Yank commentary here so is all Peter Oosterhuis, David Feherty & Nick knows everything about every inch of the golf course Faldo in good form, but a couple of the locals kept calling KJ Choi YE Yang.. lol

Wonder what it's like in 3D?
