Here's a thought. Think back to that old Man Ure shirt that had past players names all over it. What if 'Stars In Stripes' is a clue. Maybe the new shirt will have the names of former Saints 'Stars' in the stripes???

You heard it here first folks. ;-)

Stars in stripes was actually my idea when someone on here was looking for a title for a saints book and I'm confident they just read that thread and liked it ;)

Wouldn't they have done that with the 125 year kit and incorporate the names in the sash ?

Maybe it was overlooked as they wanted to keep the shirt as close to the 1885 original as possible?

After the success of the sash they need something that is going to be as popular with the fans. Something like this may fit the bill?

Hey, it's just a thought. I could be barking up the wrong tree completely. It was just a thought when I saw the 'Stars In Stripes' promotion on the website.

The most interesting thing about that "Stars in Stripes?" thing is that they've used the pre-125th Anniversary badge on it.

Also, anyone else spotted this little teaser to the left of the main story, before we all get carried away with the thin stripes ?

The silhouette means nothing at all regarding the kit style, it's just a silhouette.

I've just got a feeling that this new shirt will be terrible. They reckon popularity will surpass the sash, that's building it up pretty big.. who would preorder a shirt they'd never seen anyway??

I'm a bit worried now.

I don't understand the "stars in stripes?" slogan.

Or, to be more accurate, I don't understand the question mark.

Given that it's 99.9% certain we will be in stripes...surely the "?" can only refer to the lingering doubt as to whether we have any stars!!!!

If we sign some proven premiership players then we have found our stars. ;-)

Blimey some right desperate people on here, here's a crazy idea stop worrying about every little thing to do with saints and get on with something else! The stars is probably the the players and stripes is just a way of saying we will be going back to them next year

This! I've seen them queuing up on the Itchen bridge, all over a shirt they haven't even seen yet ffs.

The kind of daft sod who would also rather pay addiional postage to hopefully get the shirt delivered on launch day at whatever point the postie wants to deliver, rather than just amble down to one of the club shops and pick one up when there's no-one around, which there hasn't been by about 9:30am for the last couple of seasons even when we were selling record numbers of kits. Fair enough if you live away from Southampton, but even as a regular kit-buying idiot I'm nevertheless completely over the whole launch day nonsense. The perceived impact of wearing the new kit lasts for about as long as it takes for one person to see one other person wearing it for the first time, and is utterly not worth the hassle.

They have NO chance of selling as many as the sash sold either. A unique style which appealed to retro kit buyers, new kit buyers, traditional polo shirt style with no sponsor, which non-kit wearers would wear, going on sale in a World Cup summer when interest in football is at a high, and looking quite similar to the then-England kit but with a Southampton flavour.

Compared to this year's "we're probably going back to stripes, with a sponsor, it's a non-World Cup year, but at least we've got a few more fans".

Re Huddersfield kit - me too. That in red and White would be perfect.

Yes, I'd love us to look like a generic parks team.

I will be pre-ordering the saints shirt.

I even now have a spare sash shirt . which I think is a fantastic shirt. the other one I am going to Frame to go with the previous ones I have had signed by the players ,

Cheer up sleepy jean

oh what can it mean

saints have a new shirt

for all the saints to buy

I reckon it's in the same style as the sash shirt but with normal red & white stripes.

Like the Huddersfield shirt.

The Huddersfield shirt is not the same style as the Saints sash shirt. The sash shirt has straight seams between the front / back pieces and the sleeves and the sleeve only goes to the top of the arm, whilst the Huddersfield kit has raglan sleeves so the sleeve piece goes right up to the collar - i.e. there's a curved near-diagonal seam from the armpit to the collar (like the 2010 World Cup England red kit not the 2010 World Cup England home which has since been replaced).

Whilst the later release date is frustrating, it might be (if the dates match, haven't checked) that the club are trying to increase tickets sales for mem. cup by suggesting one of first chances to get/see the new kit at this game. If so not a bad idea.

Read the article. The question mark is referencing whether we will move back to stripes from this year's sash> It's a common assumption on here that we are going back to stripes but the club have never announced anything so this is part of the teaser campaign preceding the launch of the kit.

So, last pre season all new player signings were photographed/photoshopped in the new sash kit in the dressing room. None of that waiving a scarf amidst the Itchen seats in our brave new era.

Assuming we sign someone before 20 July, then presumably their introduction will not follow last years script (they were awful photos anyway) or we will all know the identity of the new kit before we are officially allowed to.

So, back to waiving scarfs then ...

In case we haven't got the message yet, here's Forest's new away kit, yet another Umbro away kit using the same basic design template :

ForestAway.jpg

So that's Sunderland, Athletic Bilbao, Forest, Livingston, Rangers, and Republic of Ireland away kits all using this template, any others ?

Hearts have got a plain home kit with a striped away thing that looks a bit like last season's Saints away with pinstripes, there are a couple of V-patterned ones too (Northern Ireland away), and Man City have their own striped away effort with the silly arms-out sleeves.

Not much in the way of unique out there, especially in away kits !

As someone's already pointed out, the pre-order is from this Thursday (30 June), so we might know the design by then. Or there might be an away kit launch before then.

Just checked the presale date in case some annoying tit corrects me.

Pre-order is from Thursday 30th June, not the 20th. The article also states the kit will be launched on 20th July and will go on sale a day later on 21st July. Strangely that means you can pre-order it, three weeks before you know what it looks like.

Yeah, I was just in the process of editing that.

But there's nothing to say the kit launch will be the first time the kit is seen, it might just be an "event" like last year when the kit was already known beforehand.

That would make more sense. The article, like many from the club atm is a little vague.

Can anyone think of any examples of teams wearing kits in pre-season that they then don't use during the forthcoming season? I can't. Will Saints be wearing the 2010/11 kit in the games before the 23rd July?

Its not just strange, its bloody stupid !

And as I asked earlier if the home kit is being launched 2 weeks before the season starts when is the away kit launch likely to be ?

Nice shirt. I see Forest have adopted Green on their away shirt. We should do the same. QPR & Norwich both had green on their away shirt and got promoted last season. There's something lucky about green. ;-) lol

Am I alone in thinking that just because it is launched on the 20th of July, surely that doesn't necessarily mean that the design will be revealed on the 20th of July? The design of the the shirt could go up on the OS tomorrow, but it will only be able to buy on the 20th. That would be my understanding anyway...

We already did this one, and I failed dismally to come up with any examples since 2000, at least for Saints... Newport County/AFC did it in the mid 90s, but they were lower non-league then...

It's not available to buy until 21st.. If it was revealed before the 20th then then there would be no need for a "launch" on 20th

Ho Hum another year of not getting a Shirt for my Birthday, last year sold out in my size, this year buggered off on me Jolly's................. ah well one day.

Whoever runs marketing inside SMS no doubt thinks all this leaving us lot hanging on everything we are anticipating is a right wheeze.

But that's what they did last year. Unveiled the kit deaign on one date, whilst announcing a launch event and an on sale date. Though last year the "launch" was the on sale event as well. But the kit design was known for pre-order.

I do wonder if Cortese has a more "latin" model planned, launching all of the kits at the same time.

Like the Huddersfield shirt.

No because theirs is blue and white.

If they think these shirts are gonna have the impact of last years then they should think again. Last years shirt was so popular coz:

- no sponsor

- it was a smart shirt different than most footy shirts.

- 125 anniversary special.

I'm certainly gonna keep my sash shirt hanging in the wardrobe whereas all my other old saints shirts are stuffed in the bottom of a set of drawers never to be worn again.

Personally, if they were to release it now, I would get it so I can wear it during the summer and maybe at the gym. Now they are release it in late July I probably wont bother. I'll have the new season to look forward to instead. Thats just me though. I also wont be buying it to make a point.

Another point to make is that the shirt is 11-12. So just one year then? Meaning I cant wear it for most of this summer, then come next summer I'll be wearing a shirt that is about to be replaced.

The decision to release it so late fuels the opinion of others clubs that were arrogant. Like were so massive that releasing a bloody footy t-shirt is such a big event and we should savour it.

Cortese out! Adkins out!

Its hideous. The front number makes it look right mongey.

Is the front number a new League requirement ?

not sure about the number - but that's partly why I like it. That, and the fact that it's different to other clubs kit again. I wuite like the fact that we're producing (possibly!) different looking kits to the normal plain colour / stripes etc

Pompey did, in the 2007/08 preseason. Played in the red/gold shirt from the season before, prior to any announcement.

No idea if this rumour is true but it made me think about the kit announcement on the OS.

Are the club trying reverse psychology on us all as part of their wacky little build up to the stupendous (or stupid if you prefer) kit reveal, allegedly on 20 July?

The announcement raved on about stripes and had a teaser panel so covered in them as to be nauseating. Also the old badge was very prominently displayed.

So, are our wacky PR crew having a laugh at us and just waiting for the gasps of amazement when some other design is revealed (Air Florida or otherwise), or will it be bog standard stripes anyway?

BTW, if given a choice it's Air Florida for me ....

Posted

Has anybody ever seen in reality the two distinct 1976-77 versions ?

They were hardly used in the league but were featured in the cup winners cup, especially in the home and away legs against Carrick Rangers, but even then the players wore a mix of shirts. I have always thought it was not so much a question of an alternate design so much as a duff batch with the red stripe in the centre.
