Have had a quick look at defenders currently not playing 1st team football in the Premier league. I know some will be too expensive with wages but surely Saints could get someone in with some experience to shore up the defence? rather than get more midfield loans in.

 

Valente - Everton

Knight - Villa

O'Halloran - Villa

Hunt - Bolton

Gardner - Bolton

Khizanishvilli - Blackburn

Baird - Fulham

Nosworthy - Sunderland

Bardsley - Sunderland

Hreidarsson - P*rtsmuff

Gibbs - Arsenal

Collins - West Ham

Taylor - Wigan

Boyce - Wigan

Robinson - WBA

Shawcross - Stoke

Gunter - Spurs

 

Plus there must be many others playing in the championship or below who could do a better job. Failing that we could always play Thomas and Skacel.

Once again though the sticking point is money - I can't see one of those being available for the kind of money we could afford. Perhaps Chris might come back and help us purely for the 'love of the club', errr but then again perhaps he'll stay at FFC picking up his 20k a week!

I was chatting to some firends about the money needed for a defender. I remember as a kid going to alternate saints and portsmouth home games 30 odd years ago and at Fratton when money was real tight they used to have big drums outside for fans to chuck change in.

 

If a decent player was to cost £5k per week, I personally would chuck a coulple of quid in the pot to pay for a player. Imagine a decent centreback? that would change the face of this side.

Did he start/play many games? i've no idea. The point i was making was there are players out there that could do a job in defence for Saints.

There's been more sightings of Paul Allen at SMS for the last 3 or 4 seasons, than a quality defender in red-and-white....

we have to get someone in who knows what he's doing at the back. Their second goal there was no one on either of the posts when the corner came in. School boy stuff really.

we need some `units' like Wayne Brown (available on loan from Hull), some defenders with bite like Chris Biard, some height at fullback like Djimi Traore (kicking his heals down the road) and maybe some talent in Quedrue (Brum) or Ryan Taylor.

 

None of these are financially viable though. But maybe if Skacel and Stern went out on loan...
