Guly good, Guly bad?

It's as though every player has a certain amount of goodwill 'in the bank' they can use up before the moaning starts. Barnard gets plenty because he's a grafter and is seen as 'one of the lads', Lallana and Oxo get plenty because they're academy products. Lambert gets a bit, probably for what he acheived last season, but not as much as those three. Guly gets very little because he's foreign and although he covers ground at times he's not a grafter and can look disinterested.

Maybe Guly should go out and bottle somebody on a Saturday night :-)

I just don't know what people hope to acheive by getting at players who are trying to do something out of the ordinary. It wasn't long ago that we got relegated from the Championship with a team of young players who passed it between themselves nicely enough, but never took a risk, because they were intimidated by the crowd.

I think there's a lot of truth in this although some might not like it being said.

I'm afraid that there is likely to be something in the "foreign" bit, since I can think of others in the past who were given no quarter. But it isn't a simple thing to understand, and there are other levels involved as well. We didn't have a problem to accept Jose Fonte, for instance, and not all of our native players have been accepted either.

I wonder what it will take for the sighs to stop in Kingsland when Guly misses a pass. What can he do to build up his goodwill? His record ought to be good enough by now.

Clifford. All fans take to people who work hard/run their socks off, and I think we can all agree, Guly does not fit into that mould. We've seen it many times over the years. Fernandes used to p**s people off. regularly, just to mention one other off the top of my head.

Give me a Fernandes/Guly/Belmadi ahead of a Prutton/Quashie/Viafara anyday.

It's skill and quality football that people talk about for years to come, I don't go to football to see people huff and puff round a pitch. I go to watch us win (hopefully) and in the hope that I'll see a moment of genuine class.

I agree you want people to put a shift in and you can't have 11 players like Guly but the team can accomodate Guly if others work harder to compensate (that's if you buy into the whole he's Brazillian so therefore is lazy argument... which I don't).

I dont get it...

shooting appallingly wide or high and mis-placing passes badly and strutting around...throw in the odd bit of brilliance is not a sign of a player that will play better at a higher level...

are the goals bigger, the pitches smaller.....the team mates more visible in the NPC..

lallana plays like a player who will cut it in the league above...not really guly

Guly has excellent touch and control. He tried flicks and through passes and quick shots. When these work they open teams up and we did very well when he played up front.

It often doesn't work (if everything he tried worked he would be playing for Man U not in league 1).

He definately offers something different, and is effective against teams who work hard and close us down

Our best league run this season was 5 conseq games end of Dec into January

Huddersfield W 4-1

Exeter W 4-0

Daggerham W 3-1

Oldham W 6-0

Nott C D 0-0

Not bad 5 games run. Would you take similar for the next 5?

Guess the link to our best run this season and this thread?!

from the barnard thread but think it says something about Guly - started upfront for all of our best run of the season

As frustrating as he can be, in some ways his unpredictability is quite an important asset to our team because it prevents us from always being one dimensional.

Now I am not defending him for ignoring the simple pass at times because I groan like the rest of you, but the fact he isn't so obvious is a very handy thing to have because whether meant or not he can often quickly make space for himself or others which is hard to defend against.

He's an enigma for sure but I'd prefer him to Papa Waigo any day of the week.

Just to give two examPles of why I think 'Guly - good:

Blackpool parking bus in their box to get a replay, Guly piece of brilliance puts them on their asses.

Br Rovers Park their bus in hope of solitary relegation saving point, Guly walks through them with ball glued to his feet to keep us second.

I really do think the question is a moot point but you doubters carry on deluding yourselves. He is without doubt our best player since relegation and quite possibly since MLT hung up his boots.

Obviously you want players who make the right decisions most of the time. Lallana being a good example, he seems to know when to keep it simple and when to try something more risky.

We then have players who rarely try the risky things, but just keep it simple. This can be frustrating but is valuable to a team, as long as it's not the whole team.

We then have players who rarely keep it simple and always try the risky things (Guly). This can also be frustrating but is valuable to a team, as long as it's not the whole team.

We have a good balance of these three types of players in my opinion.

LOL!!!!!

He is a stupidly talented player who at times makes me wonder what on earth he is doing in League One... Then he confirms why he is in League One 30 seconds after my afformentioned thought.

Yes Guly can be inconsistent, but he is one of the few players in our squad who can do something a little bit different on the pitch and break down sides who 'park the bus'. I don't really think he's lazy, he does put in effort. I think a large part of his difficulty is in adapting to English Football after a few years in the much slower pace of Italian football. I for one am very pleased we have him here.
