SuperMikey Posted 2 April, 2011 Share Posted 2 April, 2011 It's that time of the year again, and i'm on the lookout for a summer job so I can eat more than baked beans for the next 12 months! I've applied for a job with Home Fundraising, who canvass on behalf of half a dozen or so charities, and i've also applied to write some promotional material for a company in Winchester which ought to grub up a few pennies for me. Anyone got any tips for well-paid summer work aside from shops/bars etc? And to keep this thread going a bit longer, what was the best summer job you ever had? (Btw before anyone says, i've not finished for the summer yet, i've still got another 59 days before my term is over)
Dr Who? Posted 2 April, 2011 Share Posted 2 April, 2011 Packing Christmas cakes on a production line... ok maybe not summer but a job. All sorts of production line jobs putting things in boxes back 20 years ago, but now they seem to have machines to do this sort of thing now. Was boring but easy money! pap Posted 2 April, 2011 Share Posted 2 April, 2011 Summer job, eh? Never had that experience. Always worked all year round. Please note : not saying this to be a "I've worked harder than you" type of nob. I just happened to find working in term time to be an accidental wonder in terms of time management. When I was working, I literally couldn't study. When I wasn't working, all I wanted to do was study. Unwittingly, I introduced a massive pallet-cleanser to my student life. My advice? Get your summer job and earn a wee bit of cash. Have fun. When you go back to Uni, get a job in a bar - preferably in a Student Union.
SuperMikey Posted 2 April, 2011 Author Share Posted 2 April, 2011 I already have a job, in a student shop. However, it being a student shop it's only open during term-time. Going out looking for a job was one of the first things I did when I got to Uni, as I love working because it keeps me occupied. I will definitely be looking to get a job somewhere with the Student Union next year though, as the shop job doesn't pay well enough for me to justify keeping it on for another year. Hatch Posted 3 April, 2011 Share Posted 3 April, 2011 When I was at college, I had a bar job with an events company, wasn't a lot of work, but when I did it was at Wimbledon, F1 Grand Prix at Silverstone, Henley Regatta all that sort of social scene stuff. Was good fun and the fanny was amazing.

Trader Posted 3 April, 2011 Share Posted 3 April, 2011 If you can get harvest work on a large farm it can be very lucrative. You'll have to work when required (can be 20 hour days) but it's really well paid. Accomodation usually provided.

SuperMikey Posted 3 April, 2011 Author Share Posted 3 April, 2011 £5.40 an hour, not great. I work 8 hours every other week, we have around 15 members of staff because we have to fit in shifts around lectures etc as we're all students working at the shop. It's not an ideal job, but it's literally opposite from where I live and the opportunity is there often to cover shifts for people because of other commitments, so you can make a fair amount of money. SuperMikey Posted 3 April, 2011 Author Share Posted 3 April, 2011 (edited) It pays for a month's food as well as a night out. And in context, I meant that by covering other people's shifts you can make a fair bit of money (for a student anyway). And what was that post about the house earlier? norwaysaint Posted 4 April, 2011 Share Posted 4 April, 2011 My main summer jobs as a student were: -working in a cinema, they hire a lot of extra staff for the summer, meaning plenty of hours, plus a good crowd of other people in a similar situation to hang out with. - care work. I used to get tons of hours doing this and as I was on an NHS temp "bank" I could choose when I did or didn't want to work. Overtime and "unsociable hours" were comparatively very well paid, so I used to volunteer for all of those. There were also "sleep-in" shifts, where you basically slept all night but had about a 10% chance of being woken up to help with something, but were paid for the night (50 quid for a night's sleep back in the early nineties). I used to go back to do sleep-ins and weekend shifts during term time too.

All sorts of production line jobs putting things in boxes back 20 years ago, but now they seem to have machines to do this sort of thing now. Was boring but easy money! One job even included taking things out of boxes: in this case cutting open tea packets and pouring the tea back into the chests! I also worked on a local building site, mainly making tea, bacon sarnies, fry-ups, sweeping up and helping in the site office. One day though a huge artic arrived full of bricks and it was everybody to help including me and the site agent. This was in the days before cranes so it helped me get nicely toned! Picking tobacco in Canada paid well too, but in my day we had grants !!, so I didn't bother working in term time. On the post at Christmas, of course.. eurosaint Posted 4 April, 2011 Share Posted 4 April, 2011 My main student job was as a gravedigger (coupled with gardening etc..), not the best paid but I managed to rise to crematorium attendant (a cushy little number!) so it worked out ok ! Dimond Geezer Posted 4 April, 2011 Share Posted 4 April, 2011 Not a summer job, but between August & October the electoral roll is updated, this involves delivering leaflets, then reminders & finally going around & chasing up those that fail to respond. My Mum does this and makes around £450 for what ammounts to about a weeks work spread out over about 8 weeks. If your interested you will need to contact the Electoral Registration Dept at Soton CC, probably worth doing it soon-ish to get on this years list. Turkish Posted 4 April, 2011 Share Posted 4 April, 2011 I'm lolling at the naivity to consider £40 earnt partime per fortnight being "a fair amount of money". When i was a student over a decade ago I went out and earnt double that (and some) per week. exactly mate, i had 3 jobs when i was a student. I used to work thursday nights and saturdays until 10-2pm in Debenhams, did a pools round and glass collecting in a pubGot me at least £40 a week and that was 15 years ago. A bit more effort i think Mikey, 8 hours a fornight FFS! Nothing wrong with bar and shop work somewhere like M&S would be ideal for you, stacking shelves or something, you can get cheap food and clothes as well. Although as you said apart from shop work maybe you think that is beneath you?
SuperMikey Posted 4 April, 2011 Author Share Posted 4 April, 2011 I don't think shop work is beneath me, it's just that i've been working in shops part-time for the last 3 years and want to try something a bit different. I could get a job with longer hours but i'm concentrating on my study first, work comes second. Besides, I need lots of 'me time'

I could get a job with longer hours but i'm concentrating on my study first, work comes second. Besides, I need lots of 'me time' Your 3 hours of lectures a week mean you could easily work 20 hours a week rather than lazing around all day being self indulgent. How much time do you spend on here a week for example? That isn't going to help you put food onthe table and get your degree. P*ss taking apart you should try M&S They pay well and they do a staff shop on a saturday where you get loads of decent food at a fraction of the price and it's nice stuff as well. When you are a student Mikey what you do doesn';t matter, easiest job which pays the best. Although you might stuggle with the social side of bar or shop work, you might be better off repairing books in a library or something, where you dont have to speak to people Edited 4 April, 2011 by Turkish
SuperMikey Posted 4 April, 2011 Author Share Posted 4 April, 2011 I'm definitely not ruling out shop work, there's a fair bit of it about (although those jobs go very quickly in the summer) but I would like to try something different to see what other types of work are out there that are good for me. My aim is to earn as much money over the summer as possible, so i'll probably end up having more than one job on the go. If anyone works at/runs a bar/pub get in touch! I think you'd be better off doing some waitering at a hotel. As Turkish points out bar work requires people skills wheras the requirements for waitering is to be seen and not heard. A better option for you imo.
