Red Alert Posted 1 April, 2011 Share Posted 1 April, 2011 Hello, trying to find a NAS with a bit torrent client, and is dlna certified. Want to be able to stream all over the house to my wired up devices and would like to be able to get it to download something without the need for a pc to be on during the dl. Any suggestions on what I should be looking at, tried a load of forums but its all confusing as hell
Pugwash Posted 1 April, 2011 Share Posted 1 April, 2011 I've been using a Synology Diskstation for about a year and a half. Rock solid, fast, DLNA, UPnP, attached print server, mailstation, Itunes server, mediastation, photostation, will run IP cams - does pretty much anything. Can do bit torrents I believe, but I don't use that facility. Comes without disks, so you can size for your needs. Not the cheapest but faster and more reliable than the likes of Netgear. And well supported. Got mine from Broadbandbuyer. Comes in all sizes 1/2/4/5 drives for RAID.
stevegrant Posted 1 April, 2011 Share Posted 1 April, 2011 I've got a LinkStation Duo, which has a BitTorrent client built in. http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/17469537/Buffalo-LinkStation-Duo-1TB-RAID-0-1-MultiMedia-Hard-Drive-Network-Storage/Product.html

thesaint sfc Posted 2 April, 2011 Share Posted 2 April, 2011 http://www.shop.bt.com/products/d-link-sharecenter-pulse-2-bay-network-storage-enclosure-78PQ.html Honestly - they're absolutely fantastic. I've got 2 at home each with 4TB's of storage and they couldn't be simpler. Slightly plasticy design but a really good price and do a great job. You won't find anything better for a home network. Saint In Exile Posted 2 April, 2011 Share Posted 2 April, 2011 Have a look at the Q-NAP ones too.... The TS-419P is a great unit.. Not the cheapest, but very low power usage, easy to expand the storage on the fly with addition of other disks and will integrate with AD if you need that. I've got 3, each with 6TB of storage in them, integrated into an AD domain.

I've got 3, each with 6TB of storage in them, integrated into an AD domain. I second that. I have the 410 version and it's just as good. The options you have in the new firmware are brilliant, built in surveillance software (if you plug the cams into the USB ports) built in downloader (not just torrent, but HTTP/FTP etc) you can now configure it to be available remotely...and you can set it up to backup your data to an online service at scheduled times (Amazons AWS is configured within it) Poss a bit overkill for a home network, but it's a great bit of kit really, costs a fair bit but it should last you for a very long time. Don't be too put off by the jargon, the basic setup is quite straightforward and there's a good support from their forum. The key thing is to take it one step at a time and get comfortable with that before adding more whistles and bells. As a couple of the others have said, Q-Nap systems are also very good. A couple of years ago when I started looking they were faster than the Synology ones, but also quite a bit more expensive and I was on a budget. Whichever way you decide to go, getting a NAS and connecting it to a wireless N router will the best way forward and you'll wonder why you didn't do it earlier. I hardly use my old desktop PC these days. I decided that I wanted to put all my DVDs (400+), photos and music on it and stream it around the house. I've got 4 x 1.5TB drives in RAID5 configuration, giving me about 4.5TB space. So far I've used 2.5TB with all my DVDs on there in uncompressed MKV format. I play these back to the TV through a wired connection to a Western Digital WDTV Live HD media player. Rock solid playbacks that appear to be upscaled. Of course I can also play them over the wireless network to any laptop and never had any glitches so far. HTH. Nerdy bit over now... I'm off to the match. Red Alert Posted 2 April, 2011 Author Share Posted 2 April, 2011 Thanks very much for the help everyone, just recently bought this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-BDVE870-Blu-ray-Cinema-Playback/dp/B003I643RY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1301754567&sr=8-2 I had always used a hdmi cable from laptop to tv before but obviously that was not ideal. Have also got my house cabled up so both the NAS and the blu ray player would be hooked up to the home network. If the blu ray player can play things from the NAS I am a happy boy as I was a bit shortsighted with my tv purchase last year. Cheers,

Plus lots of user provided support online so you can install just about any unix software on them. Got mine running CVS version control for some development work I am doing. They are a bit more expensive than other NAS boxes but you get what you pay for.

Pugwash Posted 3 April, 2011 Share Posted 3 April, 2011 What is NAS? Network attached storage: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network-attached_storage Red Alert - Your Sony Blu-Ray will play certain types of file from a DLNA source, but they seem a bit patchy with MKV files. You'll need to do your research before committing to a particular file type for storage of movies. I tried several different applications for ripping DVDs into various different formats, before finally opting for 'MakeMKV' for ease, speed and quality. Plays back perfectly through the WDTV. mightysaints Posted 10 April, 2011 Share Posted 10 April, 2011 I have a WD 1T Live Book NAS. Very easy to use and the Sony Bluray saw it with no complications but the only problem i have had is that the MKV files that are on the drive do not appear on the bluray menu. I have been told that this is the fault of the media sever twonkey not reconising MKV files. The latest version does but WD have not released an update that allows you do dom this.
