Spudders Posted 1 April, 2011 Share Posted 1 April, 2011 Two weeks away now, anyone else on here doing it or is it just me that stupid? I signed up to motivate myself because I needed to shift some weight! Anyone done it before? This is my 3rd one, but I've been training hard this time so I'm hoping to put in a respectable time! (and no Deppo, I’m not doing it dressed as a dalek, teapot, skate, or in any other novelty costume!!)
RedWillie Posted 3 April, 2011 Share Posted 3 April, 2011 Spud did it in 2008 and last year. 4.09 . Sounds like you have put the training in so you'll be fine. saw a couple supporting in Docklands dressed in saints shirts - gave me a lift and a rendition of OWTS when i went past.!! popyto Posted 3 April, 2011 Share Posted 3 April, 2011 I'll be there just hopping to finnish. No time set this is my first Marathon and just want to finish. Running for Macmillan as I lost my step father to cancer last year and he had run the Marathon on several occasions, so thought iot would be a nice way to honor his memory. Dont know about you but getting far to many niggles to close the Marathon I still need to do 1 more long run which I hope to do Tues 20 miles. Not sure if you ever went to watch your step father before, but if you have never been there on race dad it is amazing. Before my first time, people said to me about the crowds, but I never expected the crowd to be so loud as it is in places. Enjoy the occasion and do him proud I’ve had a few niggles recently as well, all part of the training and knowing when to push, but also when to stop pushing! Thx GL to you though sounds like your a seasoned Pro, so hope you get the time you want. I'll be happy to crawl over the finish line, did my last long run today which was 18 miles, wont embarass myself by putting the time down but should be ahead of the sweep truck:)
ozzmeister Posted 5 April, 2011 Share Posted 5 April, 2011 Anyone running it, I will be at mile 18 (ish) in Docklands by the Nelson pub with my Saints shirt on supporting! Massive effort for anyone involved, hates off!
Spudders Posted 11 April, 2011 Author Share Posted 11 April, 2011 Good luck everyone. Is it easy enough to sign up to next year's london marathon? In a word no. Well it's easy to sign up, but the chances of actually getting a place are very slim! You have to enter a ballot (link isn't up yet, but it will be at this site) http://www.virginlondonmarathon.com/ 2012 ballot opens on Tuesday 26th April and will close once 125,000 applications have been received (usually takes about 24 hours). Then you have to wait until the beginning of October when you'll receive a pack in the post that either says 'Congratulations you've got a place' or 'Commiserations you are a loser'. Initially you'd think that 125,000 applications for about 50,000 places gives you good odds, but of the places, thousands are set aside for charity places, thousands for the professionals and for the ‘good for age’ runners, so the odds of getting a place are pretty slim. I've applied 5 times and never got in via the ballot. Your best bet is to run for a charity, but then you have the added hassle of the fund raising. Deppo Posted 17 April, 2011 Share Posted 17 April, 2011 I'm just on my way to start too. Look out for the giant teaspoon costume!
popyto Posted 18 April, 2011 Share Posted 18 April, 2011 took me 6 hours 30 but I was stuggling with some pretty nasty cramp in my calves from around the 10 mile mark, and spent nearly 30 mins in St.johns ambulance tents:( But I got round and raised nearly 1800 for Macmillan. Fantastic, I bet you felt emotional when you crossed the line! To get back running after spending time with St Johns takes some mental strength! I certainly wouldn’t get hung up on that either, I know a guy who automatically qualified for this years run because he was so fast last year…… he collapsed at the finish line yesterday and spent time with St Johns as well! The heat yesterday impacted almost everyone. How are your aches today, can you walk? No matter what fitness level people are at, finishing it is a massive achievement for anyone, the fact you raised loads of money for a cause that is close to you heart makes it all the more sweet I bet! I raised money for a charity that helps blind and partially sighted children and when I ran past their stand I really felt proud that what I was doing would actually benefit others. I had a bad start yesterday! Annoyingly I was taking a last minute crap when I heard the tannoy guy directing everyone to get ready to go which came as a bit of a shock to me I had to run across Greenwich park to the starting area and ended up nearer the back of the crowds (I had been allocated into pen 1) so I spent the first 5 or 6 miles just trying to pick my way through the crowds which was an absolute mare. I’ve been training since October but the majority of my running has been on a machine, so the firmness of the tarmac came as a bit of a shock to my knees (school boy error really!), they hurt from about 19 miles onwards and I had to slow up, but I managed to finish in 3 hours 14 mins so pretty respectable still. Very happy not to be having to run tonight though, a well earned rest in order!
Deppo Posted 18 April, 2011 Share Posted 18 April, 2011 I'm still running. I'm at Whitechapel now. I spent a few hours this morning in the St. John's Ambulance tent. Then I spent a couple of hours in a workman's tent on the A13 this afternoon, reading The Sun, drinking strong tea and complaining about the bloody Muslims. I'm going to try and finish the course tonight. Ooh, there's a Pret a Porter over there... Sent from my iPhone using TapaTalk

The heat yesterday impacted almost everyone. How are your aches today, can you walk? you wern't running in a saints shirt by chance? I saw a someone among the fast runners with a saints shirt on at the point where the fast runners run back down to the 20 mile mark. it was amazing how people runners and public alike help you out, I pulled up several times when my calves cramped right up, they could see I was obviously hurt and always someone there checked to see you were ok. I tripped on a bit of tape that was floating across the road at mile 23 that almost broke me since my calves again just cramped right up, luckily right by the St.jhons, I was almost in tears at that point more out of frustration than anything. I had never suffered from cramp like I had on Sunday and it was a whole new level, but I pushed through and made it. I'll try through the ballot again though dont expect to get in, I would like to knock over an hour off that time, I'm also going to try to do the london half in september. Spudders Posted 19 April, 2011 Author Share Posted 19 April, 2011 wasn't me in a saints shirt............. agree the whole spirit is amazing! And this is what sums up doing the marathon! Cramp, pain, tripping, it almost broke you, yet you are already thinking about doing it next year…….Great effort! What makes us want to come back for more!!!
Deppo Posted 19 April, 2011 Share Posted 19 April, 2011 Nearly finished. Popped over the bridge to have a look round the Tate Modern this morning. And I have free tickets to The London Dungeon which I got with Tesco Clubcard vouchers. I'm just in the queue to get in now. Will hopefully finish later on this afternoon. Spudders Posted 19 April, 2011 Author Share Posted 19 April, 2011 Well done to those completing it, fantastic. Especially to Deppo who has managed not only to maintain a consistent level of forum posts from his humours persona during the past few days of running, but he has also managed to vastly increase his level of tiresome persona posting up to pest level! Enjoy the London Dungeon Deppo, you've done well to accumulate such a high level of clubcard points considering you do your main shops at Lidl.
