Relief when a player leaves

I know it's an unpopular POV, but I always quite liked Jermaine Wright. Every squad (especially a squad where money is tight) needs a utility player and he was it for us.

He always put in a shift and whilst he wasn't the greatest player around, certainly wasn't as bad as so many on here think. Another case in point is Paul Telfer. A player in the same mould, fulfilling the same role, and equally despised.

I also think that the SaintsWeb fanbase would list any of our holding CM's - starting with Oakley and continuing to this day. This isn't because they've been bad, just that the role is rarely eye catching QED they're ****.

Totally agree on both Wright and Telfer, Telfs was a brilliant signing, him and Willo on free's and instantly the most porous defence in the leak looked much more robust and gave WGS a solid platform on which to build.

It never ceases to amaze me that the likes of Oakley/Wright/Telfer/Idiakez/Pele (Only in midfield, I totally agree that he was not a CB) get totally slated while the likes of Viafara/Prutton get standing ovations and adulation... just because they 'looked' like they were doing something.

Oakley was class, not sure why he got slated really. He just needed an energetic player next to him doing the work.

Wright was crap. Being played in a variety of possitions doesn't make you a utility player. I saw him play terribly at LB, RB, CM and RM on several occasions. Apparently he even played LM once, but I didn't see that.

Telfer was a decent right sided player to have in the squad.

Idiakez was old and knackered. At the time it looked like a good deal, but clearly the guy was crocked and never really did it on the few occasions he was fit.

Pele was a quality holding player. Him and Guthrie were probably the best CM pairing we had under Burley.

Viafara was good at running at defences and causing panic, but ultimately he was too much of a liability with his (lack of) passing.

Prutton I thought was better than JV.

Prutton's best move was never on the pitch, it was clapping the fans at the end of the game. Get the knuckle draggers onside and you'll be a hero regardless of ability (just ask Ostlund)

Great goal for Swindon the other day against Brighton - god awful haircut though.

Agree with this although i dont agree with Wright, IMO he was an awful player. Telfer through was a great signing for nothing i think, gave us balance and was what Eric Cantona would call a water carrier. A good solid pro who did all the dirty work which goes unnoticed. Oakley was a quiality player, a really good intellegent footballer.

Apart from scoring an own goal' date=' missing a penalty and going for goal in extra time when he could have squared it.[/quote']

and being offside so many times it must have gone into double figures, thus stopping a lot of our promising build up play dead in its tracks

Ostlund, utter ****e.

Another one who lacked talent but couldn't be faulted for his work rate or commitment

He was also as strong as an ox, I will never forget John Hartson karate kicking him in the chest and him getting up as if nothing had happened, or when I saw him play in a reserve game a youngster tried to shoulder barge him off the ball and Ostlund sent him flying 6 feet through the air and on to his back.

I'll get slated for this, but I'll say Kevin Phillips, obviously not because of the way he played for us, but the manner in which he left, asking to go the day after we were relegated. My only regret is the poisonous little c unt didn't get his legs broken the following season. Oh, and Crouch can be included in that too

In their defence...I think Phillips was reluctant to come in the first place and clearly wanted to keep his career on top.

You see now that 4 years later he's still coming off the bench (at Brum?) ..and scoring in stoppage time.

Might not have liked him too much at the time, but a good man to have in the team.

Crouch's career was going nowhere, until he came to us. When Harry finally used him and talked him into an England shirt inside six months. I rate him as a very useful Premiership no.9 with good ball skills, whereas many people only see him as a clumsy beanpole.

When Harry gets to manage England...he'll have Crouch's name as first on the team sheet..together with all the other Spurs "Anglo's ".

I don't blame either of them for NOT wanting to play in the CCC. Would you expect either of them to still be with us in L1?.

Hughes, Speedie, Groves, Lee, Grobelaar, Dixon, Hurst.................

and any other old mercenary that came here to loot the place rather than play.

agree with all those ..except maybe Hirst .

He was a class " toughie-type " CF. Was unlucky to damage his leg when training pre-season 98/99 ...and never recovered proper fitness.

1997-98 was a tough season, but Hirst, Ostenstad, Kevin Davies ... and MLT all managed around 10 goals each.

Quite an accomplishment when you consider we spent most of the season in the bottom half of the table.

Ian Branfoot was not as bad as many people claim, he kept us in the top league. The manager i was most glad to see was that useless wurzel head ...Sturrock. Premier league manager ?, your having a laff !!

I didn't want Chris Nicholl to go but the rumour was that he was going to be replaced by Harry Redknapp (who was doing well at Bournemouth) with Jimmy Case as player/assistant manager.

Branfoot arrived, released Case (you don't play my style of football), sold Alan Shearer, Barry Horne, Tim Flowers and bought a series of deadbeats (Ken Monkou excluded) and played some awful football (we used to take bets on what time Hurlock would get his yellow card).

As for players, Ripley - made it plain it didn't want to be here, Lee Todd - absolutely useless, and Dixon - good player in his day but well past his sell-by date.

I remember posting at the time of burley that you could count on one hand the very good games wright had....his 9/10 games were very average

To be honest you could probably count them on one finger.

He's from Plymouth, so you're both right.

I know it sounds wrong in hindsight, but at the time I was delighted to get rid of Kevin Davies (2nd time), as most people seemed to be.

His wages were enormous, probably the highest in the squad (20k was mentioned) and, when picked, he just used to stroll around the pitch looking disinterested and unfit. It was looking like we'd be stuck with a useless player on high wages, when Big Sam unexpectedly took him to Bolton. Couldn't believe anyone would want him at the time. Some people may claim it was a loss for us, but that's forgetting how poor he was for us then. I can't remember being happier to see a player move on.

Seems to have worked out ok for him and them in the end though.
