The death of east street

Green Shield was across Queensway, on the northern corner of East St & Queensway. Brentfords was close in that part of East Street also.

The last specialist organ shop (fnarr fnarr) in southampton was in the east street centre, teville organs. I'm gland theyve gone.

Expect the Oak and the Anchor to stay - the high rise is staying.

My memories of East Street shopping centre will always be Tandy - the music shop, whatever it was/is called - cheap jewellers and a pet shop stuffed fulled of lizards, oh and the chavs and drunks

Used to always go to Nicks (?) 'restaurant' outside East Street Centre before matches for a fry-up with my Dad, then head into shopping centre to look around 'Past-times II' for some weird toys???

Have I just had false memory syndrome or am I remembering this correctly??

Something very big development wise could be imminent I suspect. Queensway is a prime site for 'luxury apartments' reckon. Maybe the council is finally getting it's arse into gear?

i worked in Debenhams over 8 years ago and there was talk of this back then. moving to the Bargate was mentioned, as was taking over what is now Primark from M&S when they moved to WestQuay. apparently Debenhams was offered a move to WestQuay but turned it down.

Are they not building the third phase of west quay soon. Would be the obvious home for debenhams if they are.

No way!!!! Not another f*cking supermarket!!!! East Street was awesome, I used to love the Toy Shop when I was young, also Tandy was good and there was a really good music shop there too.

I remember being young, possibly 5 or so and the place being really busy and my parents letting me buy a small toy in the toy shop. I also remember my parents visiting the weird tower block with the outside stairs ( http://www.yourlocalweb.co.uk/images/pictures/02/61/east-street-shopping-centre-capital-house-25422.jpg ) and buying a stereo system in about 1979 ... anyone know what shop was in there?? Is that building going too?

Oh well, I suppose it is all a waste of space and a supermarket there would rejuvenate that area and East Street and encourage people to walk past all the small shops on that road ... not sure there are many left mind you!?

I remember it well. Comet, Tandys, the weird book shop, the bike shop upstairs which had a repair area the you got to by the fire escape at the back. I remember me and DickyHale getting chased out of there for winding up a security guard and having a few knee tremblers after hours in the car park with some young ladies. Also Christmas **** up in the Royal Oak when i was at the tech college.

Happy days.

Nicks is still there, dont know about past times tho. The shops in there changed with monotonous regularity.

Well Bargate is almost closed now, just the odd shop down below and shakeaway, they can't be making much rent there now, all those Goths will be homeless

My art student mate has an exhibiton running in there for the next month. They definitely cant be making much money...

Hopefully bargate will become a better shopping centre then and be up there with the mall aka marlins, most people on go to west quay and don't bother going any where else i remember marlins centre being the place to go but now it's full of shops but hardly any people.

It was the secretaries and catering for me.

I always remember one year there was a girl I fancied that didn't turn up, I got rat faced and I ended up with this Big Boned Girl from the catering course who had a crush on me. She seemed quite shy to begin with, but at the end of the night she ended up big boned in another way. I remember it as the dirty security guard caught us at the back where the loading area is claiming that 'Some one reporting what looked like a dead body' and I waved my member at him and asked him if it looked like rigor mortice had set in. My mates tooks the ****, but the bird I was after would not, and never did, what my xmas encounter did for me.

Still, happy days.

I just feel that it was mis-managed once the likes of the ocean villiage and Bargate Centre opened. It needed stores that appealed to locals as well as the Saturday shopper. And it closed to early as well, with the security throwing you at at just on 5.30. Also it was nothing but a playground for the kids, (me included). An arcade would ahve made a mint there I rekon. And it was ideally placed for a video rentals, with Kingsland Estate next door, and St. Marys over the road. At that time the only choices were either Six dials on the crap one in St Marys, or going all the way to Portswood to Blockbusters. At least until Video to go opened.
