The best ever saints game you've ever seen

The 5 - 4 League Cup win in the days of Paine, Reeves and O'Brien had just about everything including floodlight failures. Reeves scored the winner in the last minute (he also scored the other four).

God there has been a few.....

Sheff United, Spurs, Liverpool and Man Utd games already mentioned being the obvious ones

Less famous games, a 1-1 draw at home to Newcastle at SMS 2003 i think, brilliant end to end game which could have gone either way, both goalkeepers making brilliant saves and A Newcastle defender heading against his own cross bar from about 18 yards in injury time

4-2 v Swindon, league cup c1990, 0-2 down at half time, came back to 2-2 then won it in extra time

3-2 v Bolton FA cup 91?? Most exciting last 2 minutes ever

This. Bobby Robson applauding both teams off of the field afterwards is a nice memory too.

The 1-1 v Newcastle was a fantastic game (the first my sister had been to and she loved it despite not much liking football much).

Other shouts for:

Saints 3 - 2 Arsenal (brilliant Beattie equaliser, Delgado scores, Campbell sent off and that amazing triple save by Niemi from Viera)

Derby 2 - 3 Saints (why, oh why, don't away goals count double? Amazing game, gutting outcome. I remember the heavens opening afterwards in almost biblical fashion...God showing his displeasure....)

Saints 3 - 1 Man Utd (everyone remembers the 6-3, but this is the one where they changed their shirts at half time and Benali riled Keane until Keane got a straight red)

I would go for the Liverpool 4-1 as well, Nicholl's 4-2-4 system with Le Tiss, Wallace, Rideout and Shearer was awesome and Liverpool were footballing gods at the time.

This for me for performance, but for raw emotion; passion; noise; result the carling cup game against the skates when they booed Ted Bates minute silence

In order:

Saints 3-3 against Nott Forest after being three nil down with fifteen minutes to go. 1963

Saints 5-0 in replay against Forest at WHL 1963. Incredible night

Saints 9-3 against Wolves Sept 1965 after being 2-1 down

Pompey 2- Saints 5 Feb 1966 Dean scored hatrick

Clelsea 2- Saints 6 August 1967. Davies at his supreme but Osgood scored wonder goal for Chelsea too

and more recently...last years's 5-0 against Huddersfield was a good game for Leahue 3

In recent years my favourite games have been the 3-2 against Arsenal (when Niemi pulled off that amazing triple save!), the 4-0 against Spurs (we were so comfortable that day) and for pure emotion, the 'relegation avoider' against Sheffield United.

Gonna echo some of the other thoughts on here, the N'aarch game was amazing, Camara came on and the first thing he did was shank a cross into the chapel... I was thinking it wasn't going to be our day. the next thing he does was pick the bottom corner out from 20 odd yards and I've never heard a noise like it, thought my ears were going to bleed!!

Otherwise, I'd go with the Sheffield United game, goals, action, sendings off, desperate defending, tension... and my sons first pitch invasion at the end.

One that hasn't been mentioned is the Fulham game... first 20 minutes fulham ran us ragged and if it hadn't been for Niemi, Hayles would have put them 3 up... then somehow we came back into the game and ran out comfortable winners... an amazing turnaround!!

The Brum game as mentioned, was that the one where BWP came off the bench and scored with his first touch? that was a cracker as well.

The Arsenal game was also special, and the Poopey game where Pahars scored 'THAT' goal... god there have been so many... and yet we often only remember the terrible performances.

This. Also for James Beatties celebration (hand to ear)

One of the best games I have personally seen performance wise was the 5-0 win against Hudders last season.

Southampton 8-2 Coventry in 1984 I think. 2-0 at half time and Steve Moran ran riot in the second half.

Coventry 1-1 Southampton in 1987, the weekend before Coventry played in the cup final.

Sadly, I missed Saints 1-3 Albion last season. :)

So many to choose, but I'd have to say these standout most;

Saints 4-1 Liverpool 1989 sat on the west benches in front of 2 scousers who just couldn't believe what was happening but were very gracious afterwards.

Chelsea 2-4 Saints NYD 2002, after celebrating the night before in London town and only getting two hours sleep the game was great. At half time we were 2-1 down but my mate was telling us it would ok cos we will win 4-2!!

Wolves 0-6 Saints. Amazing atmosphere, Saga had his only great game and we drank the night away in Birmingham!

Saints 3-1 Newcastle not sure of year but the one thatnwasny a great game but possibly the greatest finish seeing as we were 1 nil down with 90 minutes played! Gotta love Pavel Srnecek or however you spell it!

Saints 3-2 arsenal the last "real" game at the Dell. A special atmoshere all day, a great game and a very special moment at the end particularly if you had bet on Matty scoring last and us winning 3-2 at 175-1! A good night ensued!

Some good memories there. missed the 4-1 against Liverpool but agree from what I saw of the highlights. Of the games I saw it would have to be the 4-0 against Spuds closely followed by the 6-3 against Moan Utd. But two other games stick in my mind - 3 including the Everton FA Semi defeat... :( They include the 3-3 3rd round cup draw with Forest in 1977 and my first ever Saints game - a 3-2 win against Sunderland after bein 2-1 down at half time. October / November 1967,

I went and bought the video.

Is there any particular reason why there is a picture of a Chelsea (away kit) player in the left pane ?

Let's not forget this was a Norwich side that had a hell of a run in Europe as well...

Funnily enough I was thinking of forest away in 77. Seen so many great games over almost 50 years but I remember my heart really pounding at the end of that match. Ossie was brilliant that day.

The 3-3 draw away to Nottingham Forest in the 4th round of the 1977 F A Cup. An all out attacking game from both sides which included for us Ball,Channon,Osgood,Williams.

For Forest there were Woodcock,Burns,Birtles and the mercurial John Robertson, the only player I have ever seen who could cross the ball with either foot as well as Terry

Paine. There were close to 40,000 at the game and the atmosphere was totally electric.[The replay which Saints won 2-1 was a magnificent game too].

I go with the FA Cup replay at White Hart Lane when we smashed first division Notts Forest 5-0, after two drawn matches 1-1 at Forest and 3-3 at the Dell. In the third game the Spurs officials had closed one stand thinking there wouldn't be a huge crowd but there was and by the time they opened it we were 3-0 up and loads of our fans had missed it

The 3-3 at The Dell, viewed from the chocolate box, after queuing for 3 hours followed closely by Dellhurst then WHL's 5-0.

Saints 8 Coventry 2, 1980 something. Moran & Wallace hattricks, ohhhhh Frankie Frankie, Frankie Frankie Frankie Frankie Worthington :adore: got one, & someone else got the other.

David Armstrong. Great game but finished disappointingly when they pulled one back to make it 8-2!

Most of my favourites in terms of entertainment have been mentioned already.

The Man U game in 81? with the Keegan wonder goal which was disallowed, but Armstrong got the winner in a 3-2 epic.

League Cup mid 70's evening KO beating Div 1 Champions elect Derby County 5-0 with an exhilirating display of football on one of those wonderful floodlit nights at The Dell. Top clubs didn't put out reserve sides back then.

79? beating high flying Notts Forest 4-1 at The Dell with Shilton in goal was a very special day. Boyer was on fire. Forest were European Champs and Div 1 Runners Up.

The 77? 3-3 Fa Cup game at Forest was as entertaining a game as you will ever get. 2 class sides with class players and only one thing on their minds win! A pleasure to have been amongst the joyous 10000 Saints fans that took over The Trent End.

Fittingly my last ever pilgramage to The Dell was a classic, although at 3-0 to liverpool it wasn't looking too rosy until an MLT/Pahars influenced comeback made it 3-3. I'm sure if the game had gone on another 3 mins we'd have won.

However My Bestest Ever Game at The Dell has to be Mickey Channon's Testimonial. Couldn't tell you hardly anything about the game itself - it was just the whole occassion staright after The Cup win. the Dell was absolutely rocking. Happy Days.

We had two absolutely superb games in the space of about three weeks in 2002. First the Arsenal 3-2 win - Arsenal were a very, very good side at that point, Seaman, Campbell, Viera, Henry, Pires and their pals, but we didn't have anyone below nine out of ten (including Telfer) and several players had probably their best games in a Southampton shirt. Even with ten men Arsenal looked incredibly dangerous and I rate this win above one-sided thumpings like the Spurs FA Cup 4-0 because we had to play exceptionally well to beat a top team. Second up was the Newcastle 1-1 - two very well-matched sides going absolutely hammer and tongs at each other trying to win the game, helped by a referee who picked up very early that there wasn't going to be any funny business and just let the teams play. 1-1 was totally fair and it was one of the few occasions I left the ground totally happy even though we hadn't won.

It's quite interesting to note that the thread on players that fans were happy to see leave involves a large number who played for us in the four seasons following 2002-3. How far we fell...

JPT final. Spent my whole life waiting for Saints to win a Cup (only 2 when we won the FA Cup) and to do it at Wembley' date=' so easily, was a dream. Don't care if it's only a tinpot cup, it was the first time I was there to see my team lift silverware.[/quote']

I would go along with that too. You always worry with a cup final that it's going to be a tense and cagey affaird, like '03 was, but we played brilliantly and scored some excellent goals. Can't remember a poor performance from anyone.

4-0 and 3-2 against Arse under Strachan were pretty flaming good too.

Just thought I'd remind folks of the OP.

Not the best goal or the most convienient win but a game where the football from 0 - 90 has just been brilliant. Your thoughts?

We cant really claim the JPT Final and the play-off at Derby were 90 mins of "brilliant" footy. Can we?

I'd agree with the poster who remembered the Newcastle game in 02. I would add the QPR home 2-2 in Jan 74, which was then followed by 3 months of dross and relegation.

The list is endless but number one for me would be beating Liverpool 4-1 at The Dell, great attacking football with a side stuffed full of youngsters.

Another not to be forgotten game was beating Wolves 9-3 , scoring stopped after 60 mins.

Anybody remember actually winning the Cup? OK it maybe wasn't a game for the neutral or the purist as we played a holding game but we were really, really good considering who we were playing. Nobody expected us to win, perhaps not even most of the fans but we did win and we deserved it. There has never been another game with that level of tension and joy. So glad I am old enough to have been there.

For brilliant football and elation the 6-3 and the 3-2 wins over United were fantastic. (There seems to be a theme here!)

For my other one I am with Eric. Mickey Channons testimonial 2 days after the Cup Final. Nobody cared about the football. It was just a magic night. My bones are still shaking.

1989- Saints 4 liverpool 1

The best saints performance i've ever seen v a top of the league liverpool. The week before ( or after) we won away to Q.P.R. by the same scoreline and murdered them for 90 minutes .

F**king totally this. I was 16 and at the time Saints were all that mattered to me. Liverpool were totally invincible and as it happened ended up winning the league easily. Saints came straight at them with Rideout hitting the bar early doors. Soon after it was Rideouts bullet header that sent the Milton Road end I was in mad. Rod Wallace made it 2 - 0 and I was pinching myself at half time. To go 3 up with MLT supplying the cross for Rod Wallace again was glorious. Liverpool pulled one back from the spot and we were then under the cosh for a while until MLT lept like a Salmon to send us wild. Could have easily extended that lead too with Ruddock having a header cleared off the line.

The next day I remember getting up at 5am to startg a new job at the Wessex hotel in Winchester. It was a horrible cold morning but I will never forget that positive feeling I had.

The other game I will never forget is Dellhurst Park. Just a great day out. Will never forget me and my mates being the last ones left at the ground clapping Saints as they drove off in the bus.

3-3 comng back from 3-0 down against Liverpool, Marian scoring and jumping in the Archers when he equalised. Last year at The Dell I think. At St Marys the quarter final against Wolves, the destruction of Spurs, and the Arsenal game where Delgado scored with his arse.
