Crab Lungs Posted 31 March, 2011 Posted 31 March, 2011 As Saints fans, it's fair to say we've had our share ups and downs. However, in recent memory, one season does stand out for me as a good one, although ultimately a part of our downfall. Putting the Wilde chairmanship and Burley-disliking aside, do any of you have any great memories from 06/07? For me, there was plenty. Despite what is sometimes alluded to on here, I remember us playing some fantastic football at times and being involved in some great games. Brum at home (a humdinger of a game in which big Kenwyne finally announced his transition from plodding donkey to dangerous target man), Sunderland away (Bale's last minute goal and the crowd's surge held back by a steward mysteriously similar looking to Brian Barwick), The awesome farewell to Alan Ball in the 4-1 win against Southend, Surman's opening goal against Derby in the first play off and Viafara/Rasiak's party pooping exploits at Pride Park (sadly, once again, to no avail). The emergence of Bale, Best, Cranie, Surman, Baird and Jones as first team players was also great to see, too. Though the emotion of the rollercoaster season is still imprinted into my mind. The good times, as above, as well as the bad. The Crossley leveller at Hillsborough, the kick-the-living-crap-out-of-Saints best players tactics by Billy Davies' Derby, the disappointing away days (Southend et al). The incessant overlooking Belmadi and the frustrating selection of Jermaine Wright in almost every game. Plenty of elation, plenty of emotion but sadly, no end reward. Still, it's nice to have those memories; I just hope we can create few more! So... putting aside the boardroom embarrassments and Burley-bashing, does anyone have any further personal anecdotes or memories from that season?
Saint_Jonny Posted 31 March, 2011 Posted 31 March, 2011 How could you forget winning 6-0 at wolves when a bunch of our 1st team players were out injured, no one gave us half a chance that day and look what happened!

Whoops! Probably forgot it completely as I never made it to that game but an excellent shout! I remember fearing the worst in anticipation of that game, especially as we were in a very, very delicate position at that point in the season.
Lighthouse Posted 31 March, 2011 Posted 31 March, 2011 For me that was the second best season I've seen after last season. At the moment it's kind of on par with this season in terms of quality that I've seen. This season the results have been better, but against crapper opposition with a lot of 'grinders' against tough teams. That Brum game was a highligh, but I think I aged about 25 years in injury time. DJ Campbell's looping header at the end... 'heart in mouth' doesn't come close to describing it. Those 3 goals in 6 minutes were just mental. Remember being in block 2, seeing Skacel hit that shot and thinking, "he's made a f**king mess of that" only to see it spoon up over Maik Taylor and into the corner of the net. The 6-0 at Wolves was a cracker too. Wasn't there, but remember watching the SSN live feed keep getting better and better.
Saint_lambden Posted 31 March, 2011 Posted 31 March, 2011 We were one of the best teams in the league going forward that season , just needed consistency. Was f*cking gutted after that Play-Off semi.
JackFrost Posted 31 March, 2011 Posted 31 March, 2011 Rasiak's goal against Derby to force extra time was fantastic, shame about the outcome of the match
Turkish Posted 31 March, 2011 Posted 31 March, 2011 We were one of the best teams in the league going forward that season , just needed consistency. Was f*cking gutted after that Play-Off semi. and a decent centre half. If we'd have had one we'd have been promoted.
for_heaven's_Saint Posted 31 March, 2011 Posted 31 March, 2011 Rasiak's goal against Derby to force extra time was fantastic, shame about the outcome of the match Still the best celebration I've ever been a part of- unbelievable scenes!
Crab Lungs Posted 31 March, 2011 Author Posted 31 March, 2011 Still the best celebration I've ever been a part of- unbelievable scenes! Likewise! Don't know if I was still in the correct row let alone seat after that goal!
class of 76 Posted 31 March, 2011 Posted 31 March, 2011 Adam's first England goal? (U18s) and League debut.
Windmill Arm 2 Posted 31 March, 2011 Posted 31 March, 2011 With hindsight i'm glad we didn't go up back then, we would have been unprepared and most likely would have gone straight back down, I don't fancy being a West Brom or a Wolves, now we've sorted our off field problems I want us to get up there and compete. Also had we gone up, we would most likely still be stuck with Lowe !!!
Colinjb Posted 31 March, 2011 Posted 31 March, 2011 Started with such hopes that season. It was good while it lasted.
sandwichsaint Posted 31 March, 2011 Posted 31 March, 2011 Was this the same Brum game (?) where Kelvin and Baird came close to fisticuffs and had to be dragged apart?
mitch01 Posted 31 March, 2011 Posted 31 March, 2011 Fantastic season, I went to plenty of games that year. Southend away so disappointing, Wolves away fantastic, Rasiak equaliser ecstasy. Baird was fantastic every game, Bale was coming through, Jermaine Wright was consistently shocking. If Kelvin had had even a half decent season then I reckon we would have come top 2.

stevegrant Posted 31 March, 2011 Posted 31 March, 2011 Djamel Belmadi - the one good thing Redknapp did...
jam Posted 31 March, 2011 Posted 31 March, 2011 and a decent centre half. If we'd have had one we'd have been promoted. Would Higginbottom have done in a pinch?
Colinjb Posted 31 March, 2011 Posted 31 March, 2011 Djamel Belmadi - the one good thing Redknapp did... Shame his role that year was frustrated by injury. When he scored that goal v Crewe in the 05/06 season it was unbelievable. Yet it soon became apparent why he wasn't playing for anyone better.
benjii Posted 31 March, 2011 Posted 31 March, 2011 Belmadi, despite being a perma-crock, is one of my favourite Saints players. Used to completely take the **** out of defenders.

aintforever Posted 31 March, 2011 Posted 31 March, 2011 Rasiak's goal against Derby to force extra time was fantastic, shame about the outcome of the match Has to be one of my best ever moments as a Saints fan. All hope had gone, a whole season over, then a second later we were in with a chance of Wembley and the Prem.
The9 Posted 31 March, 2011 Posted 31 March, 2011 Despite being an ST holder, I can't remember ANYTHING about that season except the Play-Off Semi-Final away, Baird's hammered free-kick, Bale hitting the bar endlessly with his free-kicks and drifting past entire teams ( until Xmas), and Chopra being an absolute penis when we played Cardiff.
whizzpop Posted 31 March, 2011 Posted 31 March, 2011 Billy Davies and Derby fans being absolute cocks
Colinjb Posted 31 March, 2011 Posted 31 March, 2011 Billy Davies and Derby fans being absolute cocks I will never, ever be able to forgive for their reaction to reaching Wembley. Celebrate with each other? Be overjoyed? Try to storm... yes, STORM the away end!? Ars*holes.
Deppo Posted 31 March, 2011 Posted 31 March, 2011 Great season, with many highlights. But for me the best moment was when I got a blowjob from a drunken StuRomseySaint on the way back from Crystal Palace.
John McGrath's Jockstrap Posted 31 March, 2011 Posted 31 March, 2011 Drunk = Unconscious probably - hope you wake up soon.
rolosfc Posted 1 April, 2011 Posted 1 April, 2011 The Birmingham game was amazing! And although we were obviously devestated at Pride Park, that was an unbelievable day out and our support was fantastic!
thesaint sfc Posted 1 April, 2011 Posted 1 April, 2011 We played Coventry (I think?) and for some reason SMS was the loudest I'd ever heard it. We won 2-0 I think.
Crab Lungs Posted 1 April, 2011 Author Posted 1 April, 2011 We played Coventry (I think?) and for some reason SMS was the loudest I'd ever heard it. We won 2-0 I think. Home game in the evening? Didn't Baird score in that game after scoring at Pride Park and hitting the post at home to WBA? Already carving himself out as a master set-piece specialist
SparkySaint Posted 1 April, 2011 Posted 1 April, 2011 My personal favourites being Brum at home (what a first 15 minutes), wolves away and luton away. It was a great season and I sometimes wonder what would have happened if that team had stayed together
saints-cris Posted 1 April, 2011 Posted 1 April, 2011 I still remember how shocked I was about the wolves game. I wasn't there as I was playing footy that day but I remember driving back and putting the radio on and I think about 60 odd minutes had gone and within 10 seconds it was "off to Molineux".. the description of Saints' goal and the reporter saying extremely casually as if nothing had happened all game "Wolves 0, Southampton.. 4" ... ermm, what was that?! And then they just kept going in ! by the time I got home it was 5..
BLINK Posted 1 April, 2011 Posted 1 April, 2011 crap season, a team that on paper was easily good enough for the top 2 and we just about scraped into the playoff. also after failing to go up everyone knew we were in big trouble.
alpine_saint Posted 1 April, 2011 Posted 1 April, 2011 crap season, a team that on paper was easily good enough for the top 2 and we just about scraped into the playoff. also after failing to go up everyone knew we were in big trouble. This. Letting Leon Best play the whole of that second play-off leg was sheer incompetence the way he was on the night. I was in Park City Utah watching the live written commentary feed of the extra time and penos, and when I saw Best was taking the first, I knew where it was leading. And I was considering the ramafications of the amount of money spent with no promotion as soon as I saw that Idiakez was next up to take one...
thesaint sfc Posted 1 April, 2011 Posted 1 April, 2011 Leon Best taking the first penalty is the worlds biggest every mystery to me. Burley really was a dire manager.
Thedelldays Posted 1 April, 2011 Posted 1 April, 2011 burley showed us he was not a very good manager..the inconsistancy shown that season was odd... the rasiak situation was also odd
rshephard3 Posted 1 April, 2011 Posted 1 April, 2011 Dont really buy the burley bashing as much as some, the guy was a few penno's and a final from guiding us back. And managed a team that supplied me with one of my fondest ever memories when ras scored at our end. Celebrated so much it made me light headed and ended up about 5 rows down hugging randoms. The outcome of the season matters not. The memories count for everything. Because that's what it's all about really.
Lord Duckhunter Posted 1 April, 2011 Posted 1 April, 2011 After 27 seasons in the top flight we should have done better than mid table and scrape into the play offs in our first 2 years down. All in all it was a pretty poor effort that second season as Burley seemed satisfied with a play off place. All I'll remember about that season was chucking away points and winning positions, including the first leg at SMS.

The fact that we lost on penalties is only half the story. You're missing the, 'only scraping into the play offs after winning our last 3 games of the season, despite spending more money than anyone except Sunderland,' bit. Would you be saying the same this season if we finished 6th and lost the play off semi to Bompey on pens?
Super_Uwe Posted 1 April, 2011 Posted 1 April, 2011 I think overall it wasn't a bad year compared to recent times (not hard you might say!), but I couldn't really say it was one of the best. It can't ever be in my eyes as it was the start of us almost getting liquidated... That team reminds me a lot of the Cardiff team this season; plenty of talent but just unable to get any real consistency when it matters.
