Rut Posted 31 March, 2011 Share Posted 31 March, 2011 Well the baseball season starts again today. With a regular season of 162 games (they pretty much play every day until the end of September) it is definitely a game where you need a strong squad. My money is on the Cincinnati Reds @ 25/1. They had a good season last year and have not lost any of their star players in the close-season. Chapman to be the killer closer. From the AL? I think the Chicago White Sox may surprise a few people. The team to suck the most? The Cards. Their time is up. Anyway - looking forward to the season. THROW A SLIDER MATE!!!! Saint 76er Posted 31 March, 2011 Share Posted 31 March, 2011 The Phillies 'four aces' surely trump any other pitching rotation by a long way. Doc Hallyday, Cliff Lee, Roy Oswalt and Cole Hamels (+ Joe Blanton) = World Series champs or bust. Fielding and batting rotations are still a work in progress though, with Chase Utley on long term DL and Jayson Werth now in Washington. Ryan Howard and Jimmy Rollins need to step up to the plate (literally) as runs will have to come from somewhere. But what a pitching rotation ... Go Phils !!!!! Many sports are boring if you have no personal interest in either the sport or the teams playing. (BTW, Baseball may be an american invented sport, but it is heavily derived from the English game of Rounders). Baseball got me hooked pretty quickly once I started to understand what was going on and some of the nuances of the game - and for a three hour game, the breaks aren't that bad - about two minutes at the end of each half inning when the teams changeover - and another two minutes at a pitching change. I will admit - it can seem a slow game if there are not many hits, but then football can be boring sometimes too. Maybe you just caught a bad game. Hi equalizer, opening day win for the phils! Left it late though, but the lesser lights got the job done. Looking to crack 100 wins in regular season, just hope injuries don't derail things. For anyone whose interested, the Phillies went into the season on the back of 123 consecutive home sellouts at Citizens Bank Park which holds 45000. No wonder their payroll this year is pushing $170 million!

Philly people hate New York with a passion (think Saints/Pmuff), but all sports need rivalry. Philly sports fans get a bad rap from Americam media, just for being passionate, more like English football fans than just sitting quietly as if it were a library visit! Another win for Phillies yesterday on back of great pitching from Cliff Lee. This guy is a legend to Phils fans after turning down the hated Yankees to return to Philadelphia in a stunning trade late last year.

(my 2nd biggest passion behind saints is 76ers) Yea great series win watched a bit of the 1st and 3rd game missed lees game next up the other hated team mets. A Lee jersey, that's cool .. After all the hype he didn't disappoint on the mound. There just seems to be a connection between Cliff Lee and Philadelphia, he could run that town! Series v.Mets will be intense, even this early. Hamels and Blanton next up and those guys need to do the business to take some pressure off the big three. Good players though and quality at four and five in rotation. Not living in Philly, but an interest in jazz drew me to it as Philly has a big jazz history. Now I follow all the Philly major league teams and yes I am a big sixers fan (checkout my username!). Have just been watching replay of sixers at Milwaukee .. disappointing but they looked tired and injuries are starting to bite. Sweet Lou will be a big loss and he plays well with Thad off the bench so this will disrupt them. Apparently getting some guy (Antonio Daniels I think) from DL in Texas on a 10 day deal as cover. Suspect they will need him longer but he is good for playoffs as not been in NBA this season. Good luck to the sixers for playoffs .. will likely play the Heat who probably have one superstar too many, but who knows. In any event Doug Collins has done an extraordinary job in rebuilding a shattered ball club and with pretty much same players has made the sixers relevant again. After a 3-13 start while he sorted things out they can beat anyone on their day now .. except Miami unfortunately. Really looking forward to the off season, maybe add a piece or two (big, tough centre please) and see what next season brings in sixerville. Just hope the CBA gets sorted though or there could be no off season, just like NFL currently ...
sammysaint Posted 4 April, 2011 Share Posted 4 April, 2011 Similar to me then my friend went to Philly last year to watch sixers, booked tickets when AI returned never saw him play as his daughter was Ill, we got stuck with the ash cloud and fell in love with the city full of love bar the dodgy street we walked down made me love 76ers even more like the flyers phillys and eagles and union. Yea Lee jersey look dodgy wearing it tho I stick to my brand jersey or iverson and iggy tops if I feel like showing my luv and wearing my phillies hat (only problem people think I'm a Chav). Doug Collins is now up there with WGS as one of my favourite coaches done a great job, last season at the last 2 games we went 2 everyone hated jordan, hawes I think will become the centre we need, i like mo speights to play more after tweeting me a thank you for support lol, rumour is were signing him today. I noticed the username lol glad I met another massive sixers fan like myself if u ever see me at ST marys always wearing my sixers trainers and or phillies hat. Sign shaq I reckon vertans are cheapish. Baseball wise defo happy with 3-0 up saw the highlights on MLB tv mets should give us a game with Blanton I saw him pitch last season not being a massive baseball fan I still noticed his pitches were being read to well at times, but he can have a good innings suppose that's why he's towards the bottom of our pitching rotation. Excuse the bad grammar using a iPad and happy I know I can have decent Philly talk with a saints fan.
Saint 76er Posted 5 April, 2011 Share Posted 5 April, 2011 Hi Sammy, yeah can't be many Philly and Saints fans around! I really like how there is the full gamut of major league teams in one city, like a package deal and there seems to be a game on almost every day. My main interest was always the sixers, but I'm a bit fanatical about them all now. Last years run by the Flyers to the Stanley Cup final was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen in sports. Too many amazing games to recount here but the series against the more highly rated Boston when the Flyers were 3 games to zip down in best of seven and 3-0 down away in game four but came back to win the series was the stuff of legends! There is a lot of good stuff on the Inquirer/Daily News site at Philly.com/sports where happily you can read Kate Fagan's analysis on all things sixers. Kate is simply the best basketball beat writer on this entire endangered planet .. oh, and did I mention she's HOT!!! Kate alone is worth moving to Philadelphia for ... Rut Posted 7 April, 2011 Author Share Posted 7 April, 2011 I'm obviously happy with the start the Reds have made (5-0). Tonight was a bit iffy at the start (0-4 down after the 1st innings) but to then go on to win 12-4 showed great character. Ended up being a great game. Houston have some mush pitching for them tomorrow who is meant to be their best. Reds are buzzing though so here's to going 6-0 with a 6-0 win. I wonder what the full story to this was? Generally speaking it is all pretty safe. I've been to some NFL games as an away fan. There is no segregation and although you are tolerated it ain't the most enjoyable day out. Would be way, way better if you had your own away fans section like we are used to back in England. Great game from the Phils to smash NYM, for a 5-1 season start. Doc not at his best but still ran through them. At his best he's from a different planet. Pitched a perfect game last season @ Marlins and that's so rare the Fish sold all the unsold tix afterwards at full face value to memorabilia collectors! On to Atlanta now for the Phils and an early series against a major rival. Presume rotation will be Lee, Oswalt and Hamels. Plenty of class there. Go Phils!! LOL at Red Sox 0-6 ... BigShadow Posted 8 April, 2011 Share Posted 8 April, 2011 LOL at Red Sox 0-6 ... Don't worry - its an elaborate betting scam. The odds were so short on the RedSox winning the AL that John Henry got them to start 0-6 so he can put a few quid on. He's a bit short of cash after buying Liverpool. Nothing like a Yankees series to get the season rocking though - and I'm off to Fenway on sunday to see the Sox go 3-6 for the season.
sammysaint Posted 9 April, 2011 Share Posted 9 April, 2011 Red Soxs on may 14th according to MLB.tv are playing phillies hope we smash them dislike liverpool so i now dislike red soxs. 8-2 Victorino RBI by Howard, Shanes my fav player, as i picked up a 2009 WS T-SHIRT with 8 victorino from the club shop for 20 dollars. Rut Posted 12 April, 2011 Author Share Posted 12 April, 2011 Good win for the Reds last night. A bad start and a tense end but the win was got. After blowing a 5-0 lead the day before it was important to get back on track. COYR - same again tonight will do nicely. Though can we make it so the game only lasts an hour or 2. Timezones suck. A quick look at this: http://cincinnati.reds.mlb.com/schedule/broadcast/index.jsp?c_id=cin shows that there aren't too many Reds away evening games over on the West Coast (ie starting at 10pm ET). Finished at 1am last night and at this moment in time (2-2 at the start of the bottom of the 9th, a lead out double and no outs for SD) I'd take a 2am Reds win! COYR. Doc got trashed against the Brewers last night, but that's his one bad game for the season out of the way. Cliff Lee up next so expect the Phils to fight back. Roy Oswalt hurt his back last time out but is expecting to start @ Padres in upcoming series. Offense needs to pick up again, after a hot start things gone quiet. Chase Utley is a big loss and sooner he gets back healthy the sooner offense will fire. Go Phils !!

Saint 76er Posted 24 April, 2011 Share Posted 24 April, 2011 Great wins by our so called poor pitchers doc and Lee will pick it up again. Ps 6pm on NBA league pass sixers vs heat at wachovia centre come on you sixers sammy, time you went back to Philly ... wachovia center is no more! Now called Wells Fargo Center, got changed about last June after WF bought out wachovia bank. Things are changing, even the Spectrum got pulled down recently. This is a good opportunity to bring up US sporting facilities compared to UK. What they have in Philly is incredibly impressive and has no rival in UK perhaps other than the new Olympic park. Over there the local government actually pitches in and provides land and planning arrangements to make these things happen. The city of Philadelphia has a huge sports park in south Philly where all their major league teams play (except Union). There is 76k Eagles stadium, 45k Phillies stadium and 21k indoor stadium for Sixers and Flyers all over the road from each other and surrounded by vast car parks. Broad Street rail line goes straight there from central city and airport is close by for good measure. Also have a look on the Philly Eagles website and check out their training HQ at the NovaCare center! Sad to say my 76ers will meet an inglorious end tonight (probably), but it's been a great season of promise and progress after last years abomination and lot's to look forward to come November. In better news the Fightin' Phils have rebounded with four straight wins and hopefully will sweep the Padres today at the unusually named PETCO Park. Phils are joint top in the standings nationally which bodes well for a team known as slow starters. Finally, for those interested the NFL draft starts this Thurs with Round 1 picks. Rounds 2/3 is on Fri with Sat bringing Rounds 4/7. Carolina has first pick overall and Philly Eagles #23, although they usually trade up or down and picks can be traded up to the last second. Clubs have 10 minutes on the clock to call their choice and GM's use this time to work the phones back at base, so you are never quite sure in advance what picks clubs will actually end up with. Yep i was there this time last year so never saw a eagles game but there stadium was massive, the eagles just need a better coach, vick and desean jackson are amazing players ps seen the vid of the bullied kid( jackson does such a great thing giving him his jersey). oh 76ers talk again louuuu what a player made that 3 pointer with 8 secs left was amazing and jrues 3 before that, we still need a centre rumours are howard and that chandler is looking for new teams either one would do to support hawes. Jrue and ET have stepped up in post season and that is really good news for next season. Yes, Howard is a FA and is a freakin monster, he would almost make the sixers contenders (maybe), but how on earth would they get him ...? Chris Paul is also on the market and has been awesome in PS. Phils just lost two in a row @ Arizona, what's going down with that? Cliff Lee struck out 12 which is major, but let down by offense. Cole Hamels on mound for final game and they'd better win. Over at the Eagles, Big Red better get to SB this season (if there is one) or he's out of there! What a story Mike Vick has been since getting out of Leavenworth, he's simply huge in the States right now. Shame there's a lockout as Iggles can't trade his backup Kevin Kolb for a top draft pick, still can't wait to see who they pick this year though. Unfortunately, Andy Reid's drafting strategy is usually considered a comedic event in Philly! Finally, don't worry about the kid (nice though) but find a vid of DJax punt return last season (i think it was v Giants) in a game both sides had to win. Giants (if it was them) coach instructs his punter to kick it out of bounds to win the game as they are ahead and this is the last play. Punter has a brain explosion and thumps it down the middle into the waiting arms of our hero, who promptly drops it on about the 20 yd line. DJax turns round to pick it up and when he looks up the cavalry is arriving at pace. Bearing in mind that any tackle ends the game, the next 10 seconds passes into Eagles folklore as DJax sees an opening (thanks to superb blocking) and sprints into, through and around a mass of bodies to literally weave his way almost the length of the field through their entire team for the winning TD. At one stage the last defender is picked up and thrown away by a smaller Eagle to make room for the final dash to the line. For comedy value the irate coach chases his errant punter around the pitch post match and starts attacking him! Heady stuff and I would have loved to be in a bar in Philly while that was happening!! Must have been the Giants as that game, I'm sure, is now known as the miracle at the meadowlands ...
