Viking Warrior Posted 29 March, 2011 Posted 29 March, 2011 Seeing as there are lots of "what if type" being posted thought I would start another for us oldies who remembers the days of wooden studs and putting on copious amounts of dubbin on their boots? Todays mamby pamby footballers would not know what dubbin is. Its about time the professionals started to clean their boots instead of relying on the apprentices to clen them. I know its part of the game and footballers get sponsored to wear a different colour each game . its about time they set an example for youngster to keep their boots pristine bring back Dubbin political party LOL
saint_stevo Posted 29 March, 2011 Posted 29 March, 2011 Most of the boots aint even Leather any more!
scott_saints Posted 29 March, 2011 Posted 29 March, 2011 What the f**k is dubbin? Must be something for old c**ts.
The9 Posted 29 March, 2011 Posted 29 March, 2011 Seems rather silly to put dubbin on plastic boots, or rubberised cushioning or power-areas. Personally I always bought predominantly leather, and always black, boots, but I stopped putting dubbin on them in 2003 when I was 1 on 1 with the keeper in the rain in the Gwent County Cup Final. I went to chip him and felt the ball skid off the front of my boot enough to put it wide. Since then I've always wanted as much friction as I could get from the surface area of the leather, strictly water-cleaned only. We still won by the way, but that miss meant we went to extra time AND I only set up the winner.

alpine_saint Posted 29 March, 2011 Posted 29 March, 2011 Most of the boots aint even Leather any more! Exactly. I was shocked at just how flimsy modern boots are when I got my sons their first boots. And they *****d after a couple of weeks. No wonder modern players get so many toe and lower ankle injuries. EDIT: heheheh, the spell checker doesnt like m!nge.
The9 Posted 29 March, 2011 Posted 29 March, 2011 (edited) Ha Ha! Quality Bullsh*t. "The polish on my boots made me miss a sitter Boss!" It was absolutely p1ssing with rain that day, so the waterproofing qualities of the dubbin which kept the boots from absorbing the water also made the boot surface more slippery than anticipated. I've been in that position enough times to know what the difference was and it hasn't happened since. Mind you, I don't run any more, so I don't get put through as much as I used to... Guest Dark Sotonic Mills Posted 29 March, 2011 Posted 29 March, 2011 What the f**k is dubbin? Must be something for old c**ts. That brings an altogether repulsive vision into my mind. One that I would gladly give good money to be rid of, but one I fear will stay with me...

Window Cleaner Posted 29 March, 2011 Posted 29 March, 2011 I expect they do, but it's not called dubbin now, its called Himalaya Wax and it comes in spray cans.Wife puts it on her hiking boots. Can't stop progress I guess.
Lord Duckhunter Posted 29 March, 2011 Posted 29 March, 2011 I read somewhere that most premiership players use a new pair of boots each week, so there's no need to clean them.
The9 Posted 29 March, 2011 Posted 29 March, 2011 Quite possibly the biggest load of crap i have ever read on here. and that is saying something No really, it's true.
The9 Posted 29 March, 2011 Posted 29 March, 2011 I read somewhere that most premiership players use a new pair of boots each week, so there's no need to clean them. Most of them have a new colourway on their current boot style every match, never mind new boots. My favourite thing is that people actually break the boots in for them now by wearing them to soften them up !
The9 Posted 29 March, 2011 Posted 29 March, 2011 Have you ever put dubbin on your shinpads?! No, and my shinpads always put the ball exactly where intended. As do Wayne Rooney's, apparently. Still, any excuse :
Hamilton Saint Posted 29 March, 2011 Posted 29 March, 2011 I just had nightmare memories of my first pair of football boots - hard as rock when they dried out from being soaked. Dubbin definitely needed for those. Then in about 1964 I got a pair of puma boots; they were wonderful - soft, supple leather. A new age! Back in those days we had to regularly put dubbin on the football as well.

Dubbin definitely needed for those. Then in about 1964 I got a pair of puma boots; they were wonderful - soft, supple leather. A new age! Back in those days we had to regularly put dubbin on the football as well. Oh God. Those hard, heavy, unforgiving boots and the leather footballs that absorbed water. I remember as a not-very-good-at-football 11 year old being forced to play in the freezing driving rain along with the other not-very-good-at-football 11 year olds and really dreading being struck by that hard, heavy ball in the thick mud that passed for a pitch in January. And you try telling the kids of today that, etc etc. How long before this non-Saints thread gets locked?
lordswoodsaints Posted 29 March, 2011 Posted 29 March, 2011 I used to use dubbin and neatsfoot oil on mine when I was a kid,the oil used to soften them up....brilliant stuff,my dad used to make me clean my boots every week 'look after yer boots and they'll look after you'.
the wedge Posted 29 March, 2011 Posted 29 March, 2011 Still put dubbin on my boots and have done since my first pair when dad showed me how to properly take care of my football boots. And I'm only 22. Swear by it.
Red and White Russ Posted 29 March, 2011 Posted 29 March, 2011 Have you ever put dubbin on your shinpads?! I remember once that I put Deep Heat on my legs before a game, and unfortunately on my shins by mistake, and when I put the shin-pads on top there was nowhere for the heat to go! I certainly ran a lot in that game. You could have fried an egg on my shins that day!
Viking Warrior Posted 29 March, 2011 Author Posted 29 March, 2011 I will turn it back to a saints related thread. I remeber being taken into the boot room at staplewood. The apprentices did not clean the players boots. it was some lasses I remeber one lady she was an absolute star and had a few storys to say about players boots . this is in the days when players had to tie up laces and addididas three stripe boots were the norm I als saw eyal Berkovic throw a paddy when woggy would not go and get his boots straight away . he had joined west ham and needed them ther and then what a tosses. as for dubbin , When I was very young I had to polish the ball with copious amounts of dubben as well
Matthew Le Tissier Posted 29 March, 2011 Posted 29 March, 2011 chelsea dubbin still lives on in my house. ian holloway makes all his blackpool 1st team players wash there own kit and clean there own boots!
