Not a recommendation as such, but as a fan of the TV series the Firefly/Serenity story continuation comics have appealled, never have given in to my temptation to give them a go.

Also, my new 'favourite' album, 'The Unforgiving' by Within Temptation is a concept album built around a comic series writen specifically to accompany it authored by the creator of Bloodrayne, which I understand is quite a succesful comic series. May purchase that one..... may..... Just can't get past my prejudice of comics being a 'juvenile' type of narrative.

@ColinJb I picked up "Those Left Behind" this weekend. It's okay, but not what I'd call a classic. Some beautiful full page art of the major characters.

@SuperMikey - I'm well into my comic books and know even bigger nerds than myself.

Sandman - by our Portchester-born compatriot, Neil Gaiman. Stunningly good.

Ultimate Spider-Man - Buffy-esque continuity free reboot of the Spider-Man universe.

Strangers in Paradise - house-sharing with an assassin.

Sanctuary - Japanese crime drama about a mob boss and a politician in cahoots to take over Japan.

That should keep you busy for now.

I have a room full of the things.

I heartily recommend:

anything by Pat Mills (2000ad, Marshal Law, early Doctor Who)

anything by Bryan Talbot ('im currently re-reading Luther Arkwright, but Forbidden Planet in town has his new book on offer atm.)

anything drawn by Kevin O'Neil (especially Nemesis the Warlock and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen)

anything by Alan Moore (his swamp thing is ace and has had a bit of a renaissance in recent years, league of extraordinary gentlemen is miles better than the film, and the volume is out in july)

Johnathan Hickman's S.H.I.E.L.D is currently ongoing and is worth a look

Warren Ellis (Transmetropolitan is my main recommendation, Ministry of Space is a great take on a Dan Dare type story, Freakangels is ace)

any Garth Ennis (his Punisher properly defined the character for the first time, The Boys and Preacher are well worth looking into)

Erik Larsen's Savage Dragon (a little continuity heavy previously but is just about to have a jumping on issue, old school typer superherostuff, but well written)

Grant Morrison (Arkham Asylum is a must read - fantastic art too, The Invisibles, All Star Supermanis how superman should always be done.)

Mark Millar (Kick Ass 1/2, Wanted, Nemesis, Superior, Old Man Logan. Kick Ass, Superior and Nemesis can be found in Clint magazine, not always consistent, but good value, also contains Jonothan Ross' Turf)

Eric Powell's The Goon

Any Frank Millar (im not a massive fan of Sin City, and his All Star Batman has many detractors, but i found it lots of fun).

Robert 'Walking Dead' Kirkman also has Invincible that is very reminniscent of early spiderman.

YES I AM A MASSIVE NERD.

I think there is already a wealth of excellent reading already recommended on this thread but I would like to add a couple of suggestions.

Criminal by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips is absolutely fantastic. 'Film noir' in graphic novel format. The first deluxe hardcover is a snip at around £25 on Amazon.

As Percy Windham has already mentioned, anything (or possibly everything) by Alan Moore. There are so many of note; Watchmen, V for Vendetta, From Hell, Promethea.

If your tastes are more 'alternative' then explore the world of Robert Crumb. Underground comics that are sometimes utterly tasteless and downright offensive but always well observed and deeply satirical. Crumb is a hugely talented artist and his work varies from underground comics to portraits of jazz and blues greats to the book of Genesis!

Continuing in the same vein, The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers comics by Gilbert Shelton. Drug fuelled madcap capers!

Not a comic/graphic novel fan but I did follow the 'Aliens' and '..vs Predator' series in the 80's.

Oh yeah...I do have a copy of 'From Hell' waiting to be read.

Oh, if only they'd made films that followed the Aliens comics. They were awesome.
