What would you rather have - 3 games in hand or 5 extra points?

On paper the three games in hand that we have on Huddersfield seems quite handy. Getting five or more points from those games ain't gonna be easy though.

Going on current form..3 games in hand,no doubt ! Win two, lose one and we`re there.

On a similar note, I believe Huddersfield will drop many points in the run in, and that Posh will finish above them. Peterborough have been unlucky for a couple of games, but I still consider them to be our top contender for the 2 place.

5 points would take us above them into 2nd !

I'm pretty confident that we can achieve this so (in answer to your question) I prefer our situation to theirs !

I am confident we will get 6 points from Orient and Charlton at home. Adkins has got the team grinding results out and we are beginning to play the football he wants us to play and mix it up when we need to.

The problem is our style doesn't hold itself very well on crappy pitches and teams that hold back and play defensively. I do however have full faith that we are going to get out of this league.

Just a shame we had such p*ss poor preperation from Pardew and a disasterous start what with Liebherrs death (rip) and the Wilkins wobble.

Surely we need at least six points from those games in hand? I would settle for six, but I'm not so sure about five.
At this moment in time, if you swapped our 3 games in hand for 5 points we would be second on GD. Would you take that or do you prefer the current situation? Hypothetical obviously, but I am curious as to what people think.

I agree, but the three games in hand we have are Plymuff away, Rochdale away and.......can't remember....somebody help me.

i would rather be in our position than Hudds...especially as they only have 3 left at home.

We need to get 20 points to go up in any case so 5 from 3 is just something we need to do.

I think at home, with a slightly stronger performance, we can brush Charlton aside. Rochdale away is a different kettle of fish and a very tough game to call.

Pointless discussing Plymouth now, there will be plenty of twists in the next 5 weeks.

April 12th is a key date too, we're away at Orient (who seem to be struggling now) and Posh are away to Huddersfield. Atleast 2 points will be dropped, we just have to capitalise.

Hate playing Charlton always close games but see us edging this 2-1,Rochdale away is going to be tough, they're a good side 1-1 and Plymouth away a hard fought 1-0 win sealing our promotion. It's going to be very close and I pray our best players stay fit but we're going to do it.

3 games, pick any three of our last ten games to use as our games in hand and I'm confident of six or more points.

I have always said that I would much rather have the points in the bag. However I think we could get (and might need) more than the five points. Being wildley optimistic would could get all nine - so on this occasion you can keep your 5 and I'll gamble that we get at least that.

I'm with you, our 3 in hand over Huddersfield are Charlton home and Plymouth away, should wins and Rochdale away, could win, i'd back us to get at least 7 points from those three, on this occasion i'll gamble.

The three games in hand are two home and one away. I would prefer the games in hand. And before anybody chips in pointing out that the postponed games were all away, Huddersfield have three home games left and we have five.

I am not sure I agree with the above. We were terrible at Charlton and played precious little football of any type!

I hope this was a flash in the pan but the thirty minutes of decent football against Swindon was the best I have seen us play since Xmas, since when we have been decidedly average but getting results.

What we now need is to start playing football again!!

We should have the advantage but it's impossible to call.

I would have preferred to get these games out of the way but but we have ended up with 3 games in 8 days at the end of the season. We play Plymouth on the bank holiday Monday just 2 days after Brentford. Any injuries or suspensions and we are in trouble. I think this is poor planning as we could be under severe pressure of having to catch up at this stage. If we are 2nd on 30th April then we will be fine but if not, then it will be "squeaky bum time".

"Poor planning" by...?

Rather have it our own hands than relying on somebody else chucking it away. So I would rather to be in our position.
Ahh - but if I give you five points for your three games in hand, you will be second and STILL have it in your own hands will you not?

Personally speaking, squeaky bum time has well and truely started.

I hope you're not going to Orient on the 12th.

Unfortunately, due to the global economic recession, I had to trade in my Tardis and get a proper set of wheels instead, so I'll just have to trust in the boys now.
It is a hypothetical thread to assess how people feel about the situation Phil......but feel free not to post if you don't want to join in ;-) Edited by kpturner

Come the end of the season I'd rather have the 5 points, we'd look pretty stupid only trying to play 43 games.

Right now I'd take having the chance to get 9, 2 wins or 1 win and 2 draws looks eminently feasible.

huddersfield 18 games unbeaten which is some going even in this league. By all accounts up until Notts County they havent played very well but yesterday they were all over Notts County. Same with us though, I wouldnt say we have played particularly well of late yet we have got the points. If we can get 9 points from the next 3 games that will put us in a good position with 2 games in hand on both peterboro and huddersfiled.

Based on our form since Adkins took over we should get 6 points from the three games in question so taking only 5 would be settling for less than we have been getting and would be less in terms of points per game than just about everyone on here thinks we need to get to second. I would take the 3 games in hand as I think we should get more than 5 points from them.

Think we need more than 5 points from these 3 games.

If that was the average return for the rest of the season, we'd get another 17 points = 82 in total. Probably not quite enough.

So I'd rather have the games in hand.

Why should the form for the 3 games in hand automatically extrapolate into the form for all 10 games ?

Of the two "games in hand " we've already had, Walsall and Charlton, we've managed 0.5 points per game. We never exploit a situation to its fullest potential, so I reckon 5pts for the 3 games-in-hand is a fair trade and keeps up our momentum towards 2nd.

It's a very difficult question, especially now as it all hangs in the balance. The way you've looked at it aswell is also difficult, because performance-wise Walsall was one of the best in a while (bar scoring, obviously).

5 points would take us above them into 2nd !

I'm pretty confident that we can achieve this

Based on what exactly?

A wing?

A prayer.

Blind faith?

Misplaced optimism?

or a realistic assessment of our current form with half our midfield in bed nursing injuries?

Right now I'd settle for the 5 points as that is a very big ask in the current circumstances. Our season average is 1.8 pts / gm so rough or smooth we average 5.4 pts / 3 gm, so 5 would be near our best take over any period of 3 games - so I'd take it simply because right now we are in a very rough patch and the expectation must be that we won't get 5 points from those 3 games. A W.L.D. set will yield only 4, even for 5 we need a W.D.D.

Just my opinion, based on these 3 games being fairly representative of the 10 we have left.

I agree with what Rut said a few posts above - 5 points is better than 3 games in hand if you're fighting relegation; the other way round fighting for promotion.
