The 21-year-old midfield player was the subject of an enquiry earlier this week by Saints which was rejected by Latics. Stephens initially turned down the chance to leave saying he wanted to stay at Boundary Park. Saints came back with another financial offer and this time Stephens and his agent expressed a wish to talk to the South Coast club. Paul Dickov is disappointed to lose Stephens who only made his first-team debut 15 months ago. Since then he has become an integral part of the team. The Latics manager said: "When Southampton came in we turned down their offer and Dale told us he wanted to stay. "But after speaking to his agent, he came back and expressed a wish to speak to them." Dickov added that it is only a loan to the end of the season adding he has no doubts Stephens will go on to play at a higher level. He explained: "I would like to wish Dale all the best as he is a fantastic kid who has a great attitude. "We think the world of him and I have no doubts he will go on to play at a higher level." The Latics manager is looking to bring in a replacement for Stephens and is confident he can seal the deal before the 5pm transfer deadline for emergency loan signings. Appy Posted 24 March, 2011 Posted 24 March, 2011 Anyone know anything about him? The 21-year-old midfield player was the subject of an enquiry earlier this week by Saints which was rejected by Latics.
CWD Posted 24 March, 2011 Posted 24 March, 2011 Good signing I reckon. Hopefully we can sign him properly for next season!

Saint_clark Posted 24 March, 2011 Author Posted 24 March, 2011 good signing..who will be the first to complain..? Derry was complaining before he even signed.
Mattio Posted 24 March, 2011 Posted 24 March, 2011 Not showing enough drive to improve signing from a team below us FFS!
Matthew Le God Posted 24 March, 2011 Posted 24 March, 2011 I dont know alot about him is he a wide or centre midfielder? He is a central midfielder.
Dazza82 Posted 24 March, 2011 Posted 24 March, 2011 His goal scoring attributes complement a player who can win the ball and has an eye for a pass The gritty midfielder will add competition for places in the centre of the park Centre mid then
Appy Posted 24 March, 2011 Posted 24 March, 2011 Oldham fans seem devestated. Without a win in 11 their season is slowly becoming sh1te.
Saint Charlie Posted 24 March, 2011 Posted 24 March, 2011 Sounds good, will be nice to see him play. Should also force Chaplow to up his game.
SNSUN Posted 24 March, 2011 Posted 24 March, 2011 First of 3 signings before 5pm. Good stuff. I am not itk...
Mattio Posted 24 March, 2011 Posted 24 March, 2011 Why did they let him go anyway? Are they just skint or something?
SuperMikey Posted 24 March, 2011 Posted 24 March, 2011 Oldham OS says "The 21 year old midfield player" Saints OS says "The 23 year old central midfielder" Hmm...
Appy Posted 24 March, 2011 Posted 24 March, 2011 Why did they let him go anyway? Are they just skint or something? Yeah, the fact they are absolutely terrible doesn't help.
georgeweahscousin Posted 24 March, 2011 Posted 24 March, 2011 Oldham say he is 21, Saints say he is 23....
shirleysfc Posted 24 March, 2011 Posted 24 March, 2011 good signing..who will be the first to complain..? I'll happily give any new player a chance and eveything I've read about this guy sounds promising.... BUT... I can't help but think an experienced player would have been a better idea with the situation we're in. I really hope I'm wrong but I feel we're putting an awful lot of pressure on young shoulders if we're expecting this guy to come in an perform from the off. Having said that good luck Dale and welcome on board the bus!!
saint_stevo Posted 24 March, 2011 Posted 24 March, 2011 They missed out on a promising Stephens about 10 years ago, Well done for finally righting that wrong!
The9 Posted 24 March, 2011 Posted 24 March, 2011 Well, he's a starter for a decent team in this League, he's more accomplished than Gobern, he's playing in a position in which we needed to sign a player, and he's got a potential upside with his age, so I'm reasonably happy with this. Beats waiting around for nothing in certain parts of Saints recent history...
Appy Posted 24 March, 2011 Posted 24 March, 2011 They missed out on a promising Stephens about 10 years ago, Well done for finally righting that wrong! Rachel?
North Wilts Saint Posted 24 March, 2011 Posted 24 March, 2011 Played well against us seem to recall (at St.Marys at anyrate) !
for_heaven's_Saint Posted 24 March, 2011 Posted 24 March, 2011 Our Os says he's 23, theirs say's yes 21!
NickG Posted 24 March, 2011 Posted 24 March, 2011 His goal scoring attributes complement a player who can win the ball and has an eye for a pass, characteristics that have led to him being a long term target of Nigel Adkins, who has tracked his progress over the past months. Stephens has also attracted keen interest from clubs above League One level with Leeds United and a number of Premier League sides reportedly having kept tabs on the player. The gritty midfielder will add competition for places in the centre of the park,
Colinjb Posted 24 March, 2011 Posted 24 March, 2011 All the best to Dale. Looking forward to seeing him in action.
mdearlove Posted 24 March, 2011 Posted 24 March, 2011 Wikipedia says he was born in 89. Soccerbase says Born 12 Dec, 1987
Saint-Fred Posted 24 March, 2011 Posted 24 March, 2011 Oldhams top scorer this year! Doesn't say a lot for their strikers I suppose
Appy Posted 24 March, 2011 Posted 24 March, 2011 Someone has been having fun on Wiki. On 24th March 2011 he signed on loan for Southampton until the end of the season. After mass confusion of his age on The official websites of Oldham Athletic and Southampton Football Club, an age was later agreed as 14.
Saint_Jonny Posted 24 March, 2011 Posted 24 March, 2011 There he is! (I think!) Oldhams OS says he is white? ADKINS OUT!!
Saint Mikey Posted 24 March, 2011 Posted 24 March, 2011 Rachel? Adele? (Meant to quote this before..)
fish fingers Posted 24 March, 2011 Posted 24 March, 2011 There he is! (I think!) That's jason Euell. HTH
Mattio Posted 24 March, 2011 Posted 24 March, 2011 That's jason Euell. HTH Oh Sorry I got confused, I thought it was Cortese to start with...
Colinjb Posted 24 March, 2011 Posted 24 March, 2011 There he is! (I think!) When on earth did we play Bury?
The9 Posted 24 March, 2011 Posted 24 March, 2011 Oh and according to Soccerbase he's only got 4 yellow cards so far, so that's good, can't get himself up to 10 by the Rochdale match.
Lets B Avenue Posted 24 March, 2011 Posted 24 March, 2011 They missed out on a promising Stephens about 10 years ago, Well done for finally righting that wrong! Shakin?
