Lord Duckhunter Posted 24 March, 2011 Share Posted 24 March, 2011 For the past 6 months my boss has been a Women (first time I've worked for one). She's OK, apart from being ugly, but shes more demanding and harder than any bloke I've ever worked for. If I ask her for any advice her line tends to be "If I make that decision then one of us doesn't need to be here, and guess which one it is?", shes also great with the "just do what I pay you for, and we'll get along fine". I have 35 people reporting to me and they have noticed a difference, as another classic of hers is "deal with your people, or I'll deal with you". A lot of the middle managers at my level left or transfered, but I stuck it out and she has made me a better Manager, for the Company. Although not for my staff. I'm sure she says things to us, just to get a reaction. I argue back with her and she seems to respect that, she does tend to bully the ones who are yes men. All in all I would rather work for a man anyday, but shes on the up and up within the Company so must be doing something right.

She's respectful and very, very good at her job. She doesn't mind me challenging her thinking or orthodoxy as if allows us to thrash out, in a environment of trust, ideas and processes. All she ever asks is "are you sure?" If we can explain what we are doing/planning to do and show that we've thought things through she'll let us run with it. If she sees we haven't we're sent away to do our homework. The only thing she always pulls us up about is our/my paperwork and record keeping, which, I admit is lack post OFSTED. revolution saint Posted 24 March, 2011 Share Posted 24 March, 2011 My current boss is fantastic. She knows her stuff, gets things done and is supportive. My last two were f*cking nightmares. One of them was doped up to the eyeballs on prozac and constantly on the verge of a breakdown. She had us filling out timesheets with any tasks and how long they took correct to the minute. I put up with it for about 9 months and snapped. I told her she was a mental case, that everyone hated her and she was the reason everyone wanted to leave - they sent her home crying and on the plus side abandoned the timesheets. She later asked me how she could help and I replied that short of getting me another job there wasn't much she could do. I was a bloody hero for a while and I don't regret it at all, granted she was mentally ill but we'd gone to management repeatedly saying she was struggling and taking it out on us and got nowhere - at least that forced them to act. revolution saint Posted 25 March, 2011 Share Posted 25 March, 2011 Did you get disciplined for that? No, because it was all true (and in fact they offered me a better job later). She'd had time off with stress before I'd joined (they found her on a window ledge once) so they knew she wasn't suited to the job and staff turnover in her team was much higher than it should have been - she really was the reason everyone was leaving. When the signs came back that she was struggling again we told her bosses and they just shrugged it off. Once things came to a head they had to act but it was a shame it had to come to it. Thing is she was actually good at her job but couldn't handle the pressure at all - I've heard since that she got another job with no staff responsibility which was the best thing for everyone.
