My boss is great, i really really like my boss. Really good bloke, chilled out, (even in civillian terms) very approachable and has got the very best man management skills you can imagine.

Really makes going to work so enjoyable.

however, he is due off around september time...but feck me..the whole section absolutely cannot stand him

He is a WO2....makes you wonder what these plebs are going to be like when they leave the service....

For the past 6 months my boss has been a Women (first time I've worked for one). She's OK, apart from being ugly, but shes more demanding and harder than any bloke I've ever worked for. If I ask her for any advice her line tends to be "If I make that decision then one of us doesn't need to be here, and guess which one it is?", shes also great with the "just do what I pay you for, and we'll get along fine". I have 35 people reporting to me and they have noticed a difference, as another classic of hers is "deal with your people, or I'll deal with you". A lot of the middle managers at my level left or transfered, but I stuck it out and she has made me a better Manager, for the Company. Although not for my staff. I'm sure she says things to us, just to get a reaction. I argue back with her and she seems to respect that, she does tend to bully the ones who are yes men. All in all I would rather work for a man anyday, but shes on the up and up within the Company so must be doing something right.

My boss today...we were trying to install some military software that we use...never seen it before, did not even know what server it was supposed to go on...the install instructions were partly missing in the box..the help desk type people were off this afternoon for training..

tell my boss...his reply..."get it fuking sorted or you will be fuking sorted"...I try to explain that installing this application blind COULD have a knock on effect of the business management facility of our network if it went wrong...his response "could not give a fuk you cnnut, get it sorted now"

he speaks to me like that and I am a Senior Rate/Rank....know wonder the younger lads really hate him and are plotting filling him in when we are at a foreign stop

I hate him

My boss is a complete pr*ck. In fact, so is every member of the management team. They don't know what they are doing at all. I want my workplace to burn to the ground.

Just by conicidence i've just had a call from an ex colleague from my last job to tell me amoungst other things, that our old boss has been promoted to National sales Manager for a another department with 40 people in it. She couldn't cope with manging a department of 6 when i was there FFS! The worst manager you can possibly imagine. No sales skills, no people skills, no management skills, couldn't forecast properly, constantly stressed and snappy and bullied a lot of decent people out of the company and replaced them with crap, in fact i cant think of anything she could do properly, even when she was an account manager had terrible sales figures. Classic example of someone being promoted and successful when they have zero ability whatsoever.

I don't know how people in the military can bite their lip everyday when someone is talking to them like that. I'd get one bollocking and the guy would get a face full of my fist! I knew that a long time ago though, hence why i'm no where near the military. Dunno how you do it!

My boss is great. She has years of experience of teaching and managing teachers and trusts me and my team to get things done. She's respectful and very, very good at her job. She doesn't mind me challenging her thinking or orthodoxy as if allows us to thrash out, in a environment of trust, ideas and processes.

All she ever asks is "are you sure?" If we can explain what we are doing/planning to do and show that we've thought things through she'll let us run with it. If she sees we haven't we're sent away to do our homework.

The only thing she always pulls us up about is our/my paperwork and record keeping, which, I admit is lack post OFSTED.

I've no issues working for a woman and I'm surprised that anyone would have.

I never today...well, never spoke back like that but told him constructively that he is out of order...you have to be careful as they are your superiors and have the power...although, they have to be careful too....

still, he is a complete ****

This is a blatant case of bullying, simple answer is Fuk the install up and when its all gone tits up at the inquest, report verbatim word for word "get it fuking sorted or you will be fuking sorted" and "could not give a fuk you cnnut, get it sorted now". I advised him IMHO that attempting the install without the proper backup was not advisable and these were the replies I was given, this did not help the team coherence.

A wise man told me once that if someone is sh*t at their job and they can't get rid of them, they promote them instead to get them out of the importantday-to-day stuff.

Everyone knows that managers get paid more to do far, far less.

Anyone else experienced this phenomononon?

I had a friend who was told to do stuff he thought was inadvisable and could come back on him and had similar reactions from his boss. He said he would do it immediately if his boss put the request in writing. His boss changed his mind after that.

My current boss is fantastic. She knows her stuff, gets things done and is supportive. My last two were f*cking nightmares. One of them was doped up to the eyeballs on prozac and constantly on the verge of a breakdown. She had us filling out timesheets with any tasks and how long they took correct to the minute. I put up with it for about 9 months and snapped. I told her she was a mental case, that everyone hated her and she was the reason everyone wanted to leave - they sent her home crying and on the plus side abandoned the timesheets. She later asked me how she could help and I replied that short of getting me another job there wasn't much she could do. I was a bloody hero for a while and I don't regret it at all, granted she was mentally ill but we'd gone to management repeatedly saying she was struggling and taking it out on us and got nowhere - at least that forced them to act.

Did you get disciplined for that?

No complaints here. I work for a German owned company. They are hard but fair. Give you all the tools to do the job properly and to excel and a good product to sell but if you arent pulling your wait or doing whats expected of you you are out.

No, because it was all true (and in fact they offered me a better job later). She'd had time off with stress before I'd joined (they found her on a window ledge once) so they knew she wasn't suited to the job and staff turnover in her team was much higher than it should have been - she really was the reason everyone was leaving. When the signs came back that she was struggling again we told her bosses and they just shrugged it off. Once things came to a head they had to act but it was a shame it had to come to it. Thing is she was actually good at her job but couldn't handle the pressure at all - I've heard since that she got another job with no staff responsibility which was the best thing for everyone.

Went for an interview a number of years ago and my line manager would have been a woman who was interviewing me and young enough to be my daughter. Half way through the interview I brought it to an end as she was talking coblers I had forgot more about the industry I am in than she will ever know.

Deleted because unlike vftt i feel ashamed for what i've done. He only thinks about himself or he'd have taken up my offer of a truce a long time ago.

I assume you've done this deliberately, to make it easy for anyone to see who VFTT really is.

Nice.

I've no issues with whatever he does.

My name is David Walker and I live in sunny Stafford. I was sent down for my part in the Maze Hill trouble and was given the titualr title The Bedroom General by my laywer in court (cheers for that one!)

I was subsequently banned from teaching in state schools for 5 years but made the switch to FE and retrained to teach maths (which was hard work). I'm now a HoD and have just recently been OFSTED'd again. Yet again my dept was rated outstanding as was I in an institution rated as good.

I also teach PTLLS, CTLLS and DTLLS as well as on PGCE courses.

I run a sussessful sideline selling on ebay which earns me 5 figures net per year and a another niffty line in "teaching" how to sell on ebay. No big deal but it's a nice little earner.

I've nothing to hide and I don't really care what anyone thinks.

Fair play Dave. Unlike others, who cannot change their spots (however hard they try to hide it), you have done so and are making a worthwhile contribution.

How do you know he has? Heads of Industries have always been involved with football violence. My brother in law was heavily involved with the Newcastle Gremlins back in the 80's and earns very good money in a very respectable job. Just needed his release at the weekend.
