Bournemouth is understandable as we are their nearest club geographically. Brighton's is just bizarre, I can only assume it's bitterness dating back to 1977 when us and Spurs played out a tedious 0-0 draw on the last day of the season to ensure we both went up, with Brighton the team missing out.

Correct. This has been confirmed to me more than once this season by some of their fans.

If that was the case then it should only be their fans who are at least 40-45 or older who dislike us.

I'm pretty sure that if some random club had shafted us before I was about 10-12 years old I wouldn't give a toss.

They are just fans of a small club who are not used to any measure of success and have seen us be consistently better than them for several decades. It is rare for them to play clubs who have spent long periods in the top flight and so they are a bit excited about the whole thing.

The animosity took me totally by surprise. I lived there when we got relegated from the prem and always wanted them to do well, until the day we were relegated wearing my saints shirt in the pub and I was subjected to abuse from a load of Brighton fans who were all cheering on Man U, it was like wearing a Saints shirt in Pompey, I really wasn't expecting it.

A brighton fan in our office looks like he's going to explode every time we talk about football.

He went especially mental after Adkins said that every team in this league considers us to be their cup final, insisting that "not to us it isn't we're top of te league". I've tried to explain that it was probably intended as more of a general comment rather than referring to EVERY team but he's not having any of it.

I've considered telling him about the "We're Southampton we do what we want" chant but I think he'd actually sh*t his pants in the middle of the office.

It is one of the main gripes on a current Echo thread though :

1) I doubt any of those griping were there, probably not even born !

2) We drew twice v Bolton and Spurs the other two promoted teams as well as both games v Brighton, a fair few rigged games that season ! Fact is had Brighton beaten us just once they would have got promoted ! Let us also remember we were only in the position to need a draw thanks to winning a week earlier at Luton, a very late Bally penalty I recall, and drawing at Orient in mid week having been a goal down.

I do recall the Spurs came was tedious but what else would you expect? I could be wrong but did we not hit the woodwork in that game ? In any event it is utter nonsense though to be fair I believe most reasonable Brighton fans realise this.

I think you can add the case that at the time Mullery was playing billy big boots and having a pop at us. i also recall their winger O'sullivan? keep chipping at us. it hardly made us feel warm to them.

We did hit the post with Funnels shot. if we had won I think it would have been bedlam as Spurs fans were really fired, remember all the temporary fence ripped up?

They have done brilliantly to win 8 on the bounce at this stage, fair play to them. However, they really are coming across as absolute small time. Go and enjoy it guys and guys, stop worring about us...

I wasn't at the game, but i do know that Tony Funnell hit the post. which is a pretty tidy skill if you are trying to not score !!

not only that, we could have been champions if we had won. Now the game may have petered ort to a draw, and it may have suited both teams to get a draw, but the intention was not there from the start, of that I am sure.

Anyway let bha have their hour of triumph over us. They will have plenty else to keep them out of mischief next season..hopefully we will be there, maybe we will be the first team to win at the spandex or whatever its called.

Oh, and just in the cause of balance, bha have plenty of potential to be a big player...back in the 70's they regularly got crowds around 20k at the goldstone..and the atmos in the covered end was pretty good too.It would be nice though, if, after their pretty rubbish years of exile etc, they could win the league with good grace.
