Vital game. Every time a door of opportunity opens for Saints they seem incapable of walking through it. NOW, is the time to move into the top 2. If we fail to win, we have a long long wait to stew and wait for our next game while the leaders pull away again and the end of the season gets closer...and the pressure mounts.Charlton are better than Walsall. We have to win, or it's all going to tighten up horribly.

Feck - kind of agree with Alps! - The difference is that whilst from a mathematical point of view a loss tonight would just leave things as they were before the Peterborugh loss and so winning is not essential, building confidence, momentum and gaining teh psychlogiocal upperhand is really important - still loads of twists and turns, but think of how teh sqaud and fans will feel IF we did not take advantage of the recent other results - so that when/if we do slip up it amkes no difference - Plymouth away may not matter.... etc if we get teh points on teh board NOW.

It could be. Sooner or later we have to put some distance between ourselves and the others. This may be the opportunity.

Really, I have no time for this idiotic namby-pamby doing-the-maths sh*t that tries to rationalise why we dont need to win a game.

Alpine, whether you agree with it or not, anything in this world where the final standings (or level of success or failure) are calculated by use of a number (in this case final points totals for all teams) will mean that it is totally relevant for people to form an opinion based on past statistics and what it might mean for future success. This means that some fans will want to take an objective view based on what points total they think we will finish on along with our competitors when deciding what it is we need to do to gain enough points for promotion. Its not an idiotic concept, just a different one to the game by game approach you seem to like.

I agree with you that a win tonight will be a very good thing for us and will continie to keep up the momentum but if we were not to win this game, but continue a similar level of form for our remaining games that we have achieved in the last 11 games then we should achieve 23-24 points which puts us on 87-88 points. Achieving this level means that all of our competitors would need to achieve 2.5pts per game as a minimum to reach us. Given that some of them will play each other still along the way then thats a monumental ask should we continue achieving what we have achieved since NA came into the club.

In summary, the maths tells me we only need to keep achieving what we have done since NA arrived and we will get promoted in automatic position (likely 2nd place). My feeling is that 20 points between now and the end of the season may even be enough given other teams will play each other.

I use numbers to form an objective opinion and it is clear that whilst I would love us to beat Charlton tonight and very much think we can, it will certainly not be the end of the world if we do not as the other teams will also have their slip ups still along the way and lets be honest, we are showing no signs at all of bottling this run-in so far.

Hey guys leave Alps alone - he has been our Talisman recently logging onto The Matchday Thread 10 mins into the 2nd half and saying "oh FFS see we aren't winning / under the cosh surprise surprise" and within moments Wham Bang Thank you mam we score.

Various people have tried taking credit for those goals by saying they've just been out for a crafty fag or a lucky dump or posted a picture of a scantilly clad nun - but we all know that the truth is Alps is da Man. So if by some strange reason we aren't winning at half time get down to Ladbrookes or whatever and place a bet that Barney will score in the 59th Minute (just after Alps has posted!!)

COYS. Hopefully we won't have to rely on his magic tonight and save it for another match instead.

I had my lucky dump this morning, does that still count? I can't really do it during the game as I'm going to be there and the poor unfortunate souls sat next to me would have been upset/dead.

I think people are getting confused with what they're agreeing with alpine about (if indeed at all). We are all desperate to win the game, but we all know it's not a must win, no matter how anyone tries to dress it up.

It just seems like it is because of its importance.

A loss tonight or even a draw would not be a disaster, but this is our chance to get more than one game ahead.

Agree, especially when you consider that:

Pboro lost last night

Hudds dropped points in a home banker

We have won 4 in a row

We have won our last two away against good sides

Charlton haven't won in 8

Take it with you in a plastic bag or tupperware container and flush it down the loo if and when we need that extra bit of help FFS!!

Have a great night.

I complete disagree with your assertion.

Only a few weeks ago we blew a shoe-in game against Walsall. That can easily happen again.

You simply cannot say that a point tonight is enough, because you really dont know what is going to happen in the following games, however much you play with a predictor tool.

I know deep down we wont win all 11 games. But we have to set our stall out like that is the target, and take each failure to secure 3 points really badly in order to motivate for the next game to ensure it doesnt happen again.

Tonight represents such a golden chance to go second, if we dont take it because the team dont appreciate it and arent up for it, you really have to wonder how they will dig deep enough over the next 6 weeks to regain that chance and then hold on to it.

Walsall was not a shoe-in game, there is no such thing as you're effectively saying we should win 100% away against any team in their position. This is clearly nonsense as football never has worked like that. The beauty of football is that underdogs can and do win against higher opposition (for a number of different reasons). Are you now saying that Charlton is a shoe-in? They beat Peterborough only a few weeks back at home but have had a poor run since. The Peterborough win shows they are capable on their day.

I think Saints have set their stall out to win every game. We are set up very solid and tough to score against knowing that we have superior players where that quality will come through. I'd also venture a suggestion that we are fitter than most teams as we are ending games very well at the moment.

If we fail to win or draw tonight then motivation will not be an issue. After all, we failed to beat Walsall and then won four on the bounce, including against one of our promotion rivals and another at one of the toughest places to play in Colchester. Also, failing to win or draw tonight will not be down to the team not being up for it or appreciating it, from what I see they are bang up for it in every game and there is nothing to suggest that will change. They have already had to dig deep to keep pace and have the opportunity to get on top now but its not the end if that doesn't happen tonight and it wont be due to a lack of desire.

Not forgetting England's Ashes win was down to him after his classic writing off of Englands chances after the first day of first test.

3 points are in the bag ! I just put some money on Charlton to win

Lets hope the 2 bags don't get mixed up - or we'll really be in the brown stuff :scared:

Excited for this one now, ought to be a cracking game and a win will put us in 2nd with 2 games in hand over Huddersfield in 3rd. Got to make sure us travelling Saints fans make a lot of noise and really get behind the boys on the pitch.

2-0 Saints

Chamberlain 42

Lambert 77

Lucky dump? I just laid a cable. Watch out Charlton.

Good man - now you need to Print off 3000 pics of Nuns in sexy lingerie and hand them out inside the ground to all the Saints fans if things get dodgy near the end. I'll forgo the need for you to take the cable with you - Lighthouses contribution should be sufficient enough!!!

:) you made me CQUMB...

Hope the weather/insurrections are to your satisfaction?

Weather is gorgeous - blue skies, balmy breeze 30c - pottering around in the garden thinking about cracking open an Old Specky.

Insurrections are no problem at the moment here in Dubai, unless Porsche or Mercedes decide to pull out then it may get ugly - people need their basics FFS.

Hope all is well with you!

We should win, 1-0 or 2-1 maybe but Charlton cannot go on losing for ever, would be handy if they stopped 3 weeks from now though.

When a side's gone into free-fall as they have you always get slightly concerned that one day there will be a rebound.

I'm forever a pessimist when it comes to Saints but I am really hoping for a win tonight. If we manage to beat Charlton, who I wrongly thought would be our biggest threat a few weeks back, I think we will go up automatically. Imagine if we win and Notts County achieve the most unlikely of feats by beating Brighton tonight? The title race isn't over.

Just about to leave.

gutted i'll be missing alpine on the match thread, but i'll be sure to log in later if we lose and i need cheering up.

Toodle pip.

If we get 24 points from 11 (7-3-1?) then this puts us on 88.

Huddersfield have 67 with 8 to play - 21 less than 88 with a inferior GD. They would have to win 7 and draw 1 to go above us.

P'boro have 65 with 9 to play - 23 less than 88 with an inferior GD. They would have to win 8 from 9 to go above us.

Hmm. It must be age or the Italian diet but I don't seem to do lucky dumps anymore. I'll go and do something else pleasurable instead! It doesn't even matter if I have to repeat the process but I could end up the evening exhausted but with a smile...

Obviously what I do will result in a Saints win and that's why I'd be smiling.

Several great quotes

I predict total and utter humiliation tomorrow night, anything else will be an absolute miracle, 0-3 (at best) ...

well a rare outing against a football team rather than a pub side for our pub side

anything but a defeat will be a miracle............(Love this one!!)

With our eyes fully focussed on next season, it could be argued that as the biggest club in this division and financially sound, we should desperately want Southampton to get out of the division this season..................

Only 3 things I'm hoping for. (1) We actually score a goal, (2) Its not embarassing (3) The team shows some sign of fight or spririt. At the moment I'd take that...................

Stick around til the final whistle everyone: Strong rumour there is going to be a mass punch up at the final whistle between the charlton players who give a toss (outnumbered) and those that don't..............

That was my point, if we carry on as are then teams will have to be virtually 100% to overhaul us. We can afford a slip-up, the others cannot.

is it realistic to be able to drive from Bristol leaving at half 3? and are there tickets available on the gate?

I'm getting the train from Bristol at half 3. Only £29 return. Much better option if you can get to the station by then.

Yeah i looked into that but the trains back left very little time between connections. you going from temple meads or parkway? and how many changes you got to do.

I think driving will be a nightmare considering i will get traffic everywhere and its the wrong side of london.

Temple Meads. I'm aware that I can't really f**k around after the final whistle but there shouldn't be a problem. Changes at Paddy for either London Bridge or Waterloo East, I'm going with the latter.

Hmmm i think you may be cutting in fine!! good luck anyway.

Well think i may give it a miss after looking at all the options. I shall have to 'watch' it on here, keep Alps company.

Will be leaving for the game at 4 as I am going with My Bro, My/My Bros Mate n My Bros Mates Dads whose taking us there and back!

Are people going to The Antigallican before the game for a pre-match drink or what!?!

Am feeling confident and that I think we'l win 2/3-1 with Lambert (1/2!) n either Barnard/Lalanna for Saints n will be pretty funny giving BWP some stick which will more than likely lead him to score

against us but hopefully not!

This is a type of game that Saints will probably F*** up and lose but hopefully not and come 10pm we will be sitting nicely in 2nd place and in the Auto

places too!

May see most of you on here that are going there!

COYR :D!!

I guess a draw won't be the end of the world - BUT how good would a win be?? A real 'statement of intent', cliche or not.

We've got a great chance now, let's do our bit, get behind the team and help them grab that chance with both hands.

Charlton have lost 7 of their last 8 and drawn the other one.The last team they beat was Peterborough back in February.Since then they've succombed to some real rubbish so no I don't think a win would be all that great.

Posted

Of their last 4 home games, they've drawn won and lost 3. The draw was to Tranmere, lost to Brentford, Exeter and Carlisle. Not the toughest selection with all due respect. We really should be able to get 3 points here.

The chap who says it is in their interests for us to get promoted makes a good point. I think any mid-table team should really be lying over and letting us wallop them. It increases their chance of promotion next season.

I think you are confusing the opinion of somebody on a message board with the way the manager sets up his team.

I'm pretty sure that none of us would want Adkins to say "it's ok lads, it's not the end of the world if we don't win tonight", but none of us on here are the Southampton FC manager so it's ok to aknowledge it in conversation. I don't think a draw would be that bad, but I would be very unhappy to hear Adkins saying it.

Yes, an ambitious team should take each defeat badly to motivte themselves for the next one, but none of us on here are directly involved in motivating the team pre match, so it's probably ok for us not to take it that badly.
