dune Posted 20 March, 2011 Posted 20 March, 2011 More cringeworthy than singing "we are going up" when theres still 11 games to go,or that bloody "EIEIEIO,up the football league we go" song? There's nothing wrong with those songs. I'd sing them. No different to singing "the saints are staying up".
dronskisaint Posted 20 March, 2011 Posted 20 March, 2011 FFS if people want to sing along with the Cortese song they will...if not they won't. I'd take issue with the fact that not many did yesterday - it's not well known yet (I only remember hearing it at Peterborough)but more joined in all the time as they worked out what was being sung. Some of you need to get over yourselves...it's pro Saints noise at a game...the world isn't going to point at you and say 'Haha he's singing a song that makes him look uncool and not hard' - that's a judgement you make on yourselves!

No one has an issue with peoples right to sing whatever they want, singing is a democracy it will either take off or not. However that doesn't stop you having an opinion on the song and imo the song is ****.

I disagree, football needs to stay cool. Face paints and jester hats is bad enough, singing the cheif exec's name - that's on a par with the "saints go Wilde" T-shirts.

Matthew Le God Posted 20 March, 2011 Posted 20 March, 2011 What are the words to the Cortese song? Can't say I've ever heard it from my seat in the Kingsland.
CitySaint Posted 20 March, 2011 Posted 20 March, 2011 I believe a Cortese song originated as people were fed up of the animosity towards him from certain sections of the fan base and the media painting him as a panto villain and some of our supporters believing this. Granted it's not a great song, true that singing the name of a business man is unconventional but I think it was meant to highlight that more and more of the fan base are appreciating his efforts from the training ground, not selling players and the general direction he is taking the club. Apart from a song there aren't many other ways to thanks someone in football, there is a feeling among a lot of the fans I go to the ground with as well that NC did a large lot of the shovel work with Markus in saving the club.
benjii Posted 20 March, 2011 Posted 20 March, 2011 There's nothing wrong with those songs. I'd sing them. No different to singing "the saints are staying up". There's a lot wrong with the EIEIO one. It is ****ing embarrassing. Much worse than singing about non-players which is actually not remotely embarrassing.
Badger Posted 20 March, 2011 Posted 20 March, 2011 I'm delighted if the family are continuing their interest in the club, and hope it continues. Just a couple of snaps Good photos but not who is who there. Note NC shaking hands with Mandaric in one of them, hope he still has the watch Marcus bought him this morning. I recognise one of his daughters (Katarina?) but couldn't say who the others are. Which one is she ? Presumably the lady in the Burberry looking scarf on the left?
benjii Posted 20 March, 2011 Posted 20 March, 2011 Yep. Go ahead if you want to sing the song, but don't expect me to change my opinion of it. Ok, it's hope that's the killer so thanks for the heads-up.
Bailey Posted 20 March, 2011 Author Posted 20 March, 2011 The lady in the Burberry scarf is Markus' wife. I believe his daughter is the lady in the black coat with black sunglasses, second in from the right.
dune Posted 20 March, 2011 Posted 20 March, 2011 The lady in the Burberry scarf is Markus' wife. That's nice to see.
benjii Posted 20 March, 2011 Posted 20 March, 2011 Presumably the chap in the black coat is a brother? Looks a bit like Markus so I'm thinking that is more likely than him being an in-law. Willy Liebherr?
benjii Posted 20 March, 2011 Posted 20 March, 2011 Forget that, there are plenty of pictures of Willi Liebherr on t'interweb and it's not him.
rallyboy Posted 20 March, 2011 Posted 20 March, 2011 well personally I'm glad we treated them to a few minutes of Markus songs, I'm sure they appreciate that it's done out of genuine respect and gratitude. Their attendance would suggest they still share his dream and have an interest in seeing how his project is progressing, I hope they are there when we clinch 2nd place. And if we do, anyone can sing any song they want about anyone, they can even do it in the wrong key if they like, I won't care.
david in sweden Posted 20 March, 2011 Posted 20 March, 2011 Mentioned it on the post-match thread, but thought it was worth its own. A few friends/members of the Liebherr family were in attendance today. A good sign? Still behind Saints? In Cortese we trust, perhaps? Those (few) comments I've read before suggested that the Liebherrs were standing firm behind the club (and Cortese). It only appears that a few dirt-raking journos and some suspicious types are this site and questioning that statement !
latter day saint Posted 20 March, 2011 Posted 20 March, 2011 Think that's the general consensus. That's why only a hand full of mongs in the Northam sung it and no one joined in. Wrong! i was in Kingsland corner & it sounded like it started there & then spread. weren't loads singing it but more than "a hand full of mongs". funny how these "mongs" are always in the Northam, according to some posters ?
Saint_clark Posted 20 March, 2011 Posted 20 March, 2011 Err, no it's not. "One Markus Liebherr, there's only one Markus Liebherr, one Markus Liebherr, there's only one Markus Liebherr" is different to "There's only one Markus Liebherr, one Markus Liebherr, walking along, singing a song, walking in a Liebherr wonderland". The first one wasn't sung at all yesterday. Obviously the person I was replying to thought that he heard it, but it was just the Wonderland one - hence me saying it was the same chant.
St_Tel49 Posted 20 March, 2011 Posted 20 March, 2011 Singing about a Chief Exec is embarrassing. Who next, the marketing manager, groundsman? Yeah - Pompey did that and look what happened to them - not that I would ever equate NC to Storey
Saint_clark Posted 20 March, 2011 Posted 20 March, 2011 Yeah - Pompey did that and look what happened to them - not that I would ever equate NC to Storey I don't think they went into £120million worth of debt because they sang songs about Peter Storrie.

Ken Tone Posted 21 March, 2011 Posted 21 March, 2011 It was hard to hear the words 'Markus Liebherr' from where I was sat. Snap. I sit in the Kingsland and although I could hear a 'wonderland' song I couldn't tell whose wonderland it was, so I fear the Liebherrs in the Itchen wil not have picked up on it either unless someone 'translated' for them. Enunciate people!
Window Cleaner Posted 21 March, 2011 Posted 21 March, 2011 The Liebherr's what? Do you think The Liebherr's watch The Simpsons?
wild-saint Posted 21 March, 2011 Posted 21 March, 2011 Just a couple of snaps the guy sat down above the clock looks likw charlie the taxi drvier from eastenders.
Saint_clark Posted 21 March, 2011 Posted 21 March, 2011 In that second pic I thought Cortese was shaking hands with McMenemy at first glance.
Window Cleaner Posted 21 March, 2011 Posted 21 March, 2011 In that second pic I thought Cortese was shaking hands with McMenemy at first glance. Looks more like Milan, is that not Sam Allardyce in the front row?
Wes Tender Posted 21 March, 2011 Posted 21 March, 2011 It was great to see members of the Liebherr family at the match. I'm sure that many of them are very busy people and whereas Markus at his age was indulging a whim, giving himself an interesting project towards his semi-retirement, others in the family attending shows a commitment that is most welcome. I do hope that they heard the chants for him and recognise how much we appreciated the short time he had with us and that we will never forget the great debt of graritude that we owe him for saving our club.
Mowgli Posted 21 March, 2011 Posted 21 March, 2011 It wasn't that clear. For a while I thought they were singing 'There's only one dodgy keeper....'
SuperMikey Posted 21 March, 2011 Posted 21 March, 2011 I don't like the "Liebherr Wonderland" bit of the chant, I just find it a bit tacky. Great to hear his name echoing 'round SMS every week though, i'm sure his family and friends (NC included) appreciate it.
NickG Posted 21 March, 2011 Posted 21 March, 2011 It wasn't that clear. For a while I thought they were singing 'There's only one dodgy keeper....' that might expain why I didn't hear his name!

OldNick Posted 21 March, 2011 Posted 21 March, 2011 Bit clearer i know the man and wife in the middle of the picture standing, very nice folks as well.
docker-p Posted 21 March, 2011 Posted 21 March, 2011 Personally I don't think Cortese has been particularly good for SFC, but for those that do think he's doing a good job fair enough. But to then sing his name at games is a bit lame, and frankly a little embarrassing. When football fans start to sing the name of a businessman, as did the skates, you know something somewhere is going wrong. Singing about the team unites the fans during a game, singing about a chairmen divides. Not good.

They divided and helped heap on the pressure to the team.

I don't think Cortese has been "bad" as such, certainly not, but neither has he really lived up to the hype. Singing is name is genuinely cringeworthy, but not surprising considering some of the stuff our fans come out with.

The9 Posted 21 March, 2011 Posted 21 March, 2011 As you say cringetastic (assume thats a bit like cringeworthy), especially as the last lame line has to mention Pompey. We must be the only club in the world that mentions our little rivals in chants more than we mention our own name, sometimes it really is embarrassing. Is that the best we can come up with? He comes from Italy and he hates Pompey, pathetic. We don't, as proven when I recorded all of our songs at two matches in October for use in FIFA11. Eight out of forty-four that I've noted here, actually - that's 18%, under a fifth. And we don't sing "Pompey's Going Down With No Money In the Bank" any more, unfortunately. The list is below, I've added a few others which have been heard this season and the Skate Cheat songs in bold : "There's only one Markus Liebherr" "Walking in a Liebherr Wonderland" "Doo-doo-doo-doo *in October was Jason Puncheon, now Richard Chaplow "Nananananana Alex Chamberlain" "Nananananana David Connolly" "Super Kelv" "Deano Deano Deano" "Cortese Ohhhhh" "We don't care about you" and the detestable "We're United... er I mean Southampton... we do what we want" Your_Support_Is_F_n_Sh_t_.mp3 What_the_Fcking_Hell_Was_That.mp3 We_re_The_Northam_16_10.mp3 Wash_Your_Mouth_Out_.mp3 Stand_Up_.mp3 Southerners_15_06.mp3 Crow_Fratton_Sh_t_On_15_48.mp3 Red_Army_14_57.mp3 Really_Fn_Hate_Them__15_4.mp3 Rickie_Lambert_Southampton's_Goal_Machine.mp3 We_Love_Southampton_We_Do_.mp3 The_Pompey_Family_.mp3 Southampton Boys Are In Town.mp3 Ole_Ole_Guly_16_20.mp3 OWTSGMI_.mp3 Nigel_Give_Us_A_Wave_16_3.mp3 Nah_Fck_Off_15_22.mp3 Nigel_Adkins'_Red&White_Army_15_07.mp3 Lee_Lee_Lee_Barnard_16_24.mp3 Lee_Barnard_See_You_Outside.mp3 Lee_Barnard_Barnard_Scotland Yard.mp3 Le_Tiss_Le_Tiss_.mp3 Jose_Fonte_Baby_.mp3 Guly_Guly_.mp3 Going_Down_They_re_Going.mp3 Fratton_Park_is_Falling_Down.mp3 DISCO_.mp3 Come_Onnnn_You_Reddddds_.mp3 Clap_-_The_Saints_.mp3 Come_On_You_Reds_Come_On.mp3 All_Southampton_.mp3 Adam_Lallana_Messi_.mp3 Adam_Lallana_ClapClapClapClapClap.mp3 Aaah_You_Fat_B_stard_.mp3 Apart from that, yes, singing about the Chairman is utterly lame.

benjii Posted 21 March, 2011 Posted 21 March, 2011 who is that guy in the front row? looks like markus, any ideas who it is? I thought it might be a brother but according to the internet Markus has two surviving brothers, Willi and Hubert, and this man doesn't look like either of those. Perhaps a cousin? There certainly seems to be a bit of a resemblance.
