harvey Posted 19 March, 2011 Share Posted 19 March, 2011 Is such a dump nowadays.......two 'parents'(late teens) drinking cans of beer while looking after an oblivious child no more than 3 or 4 years old who's entertaining himself jumping around the feather statue. It reminded me of 'North End' Portsmouth.
scotty Posted 19 March, 2011 Share Posted 19 March, 2011 Notice how many bouncers the Bridge has nowadays on a friday/saturday night? They almost seem to outnumber the punters.

The 'Bridge' etc were ok at one time, but hand in hand with the rest of Woolston.....they seem to have gone down the same slippery slope.

scotty Posted 19 March, 2011 Share Posted 19 March, 2011 I cant remember the name of the pub, but as you go along the main road in woolston, before you get to obelisk road, theres a place on the bend on the right. I nipped in there for a pint a few months back, christ did I feel uncomfortable in there. That was a weekday afternoon as well. That area is getting really ropey these days, youre right. Tbf, I think it's always been like that.
Wade Garrett Posted 21 March, 2011 Share Posted 21 March, 2011 Woolston is still the b*llocks. The main problem is that a lot of the pubs around Merry Oak and Weston have closed, so the pondlife whose sad existence seems to revolve around drinking their benefits money go to Woolston instead. The parents scene in the original post is typical of anywhere, not just Woolston. The area has really suffered since Vospers shut down. There are too many empty shops and it generally has become a bit of a sh*thole of late. Hopefully the big new development on the Vospers site will restore the area to former glories. bridge too far Posted 21 March, 2011 Share Posted 21 March, 2011 A glory hole, if you will. And always has been - and I'm going back 50 years!

Wade Garrett Posted 21 March, 2011 Share Posted 21 March, 2011 And always has been - and I'm going back 50 years! No it hasn't. It was good when I was a nipper (I'm 41 now). There were loads of decent shops and it was thriving. It owes its demise to out of town supermarkets and Vospers closing down. You sound like a bit of a snob. Because I moved away (actually from Sholing) in the late 60s, I have no knowledge of how it was in the 70s and onwards. You obviously do, so I'll bow to your superior knowledge. Good news if it improved.
harvey Posted 21 March, 2011 Author Share Posted 21 March, 2011 Don't get me wrong, I'm still very fond of Woolston having spent the best part of my teens there.......it's just a shame to see how it's become so run down now, and all the baggage that goes with it. Wade Garrett is right though, it has taken a turn for the worse since Vospers closed.
