a1ex2001 Posted 19 March, 2011 Share Posted 19 March, 2011 Never thought for a minute we were going to loose, enjoyed both goals in the pub full of Wednesday fans, Didn't think they were half as bad as there fans did but they were seriously lacking in the final third tonight. Solid performances through out the team Harding again looked quality him and Butters must be pretty much our best free signings. Quality told in the end, thought Barnards work rate was incredible and he took a hell of a beating from the wednesday back four! More of the same on Tuesday, hoping franchise FC can manage a bore draw with Posh but either way it is in our hands and I'm feeling more confident by the game! Lallana's Left Peg Posted 19 March, 2011 Share Posted 19 March, 2011 Some people are saying that we didn't play well but that's nonsense - it may not have been pretty but we were composed and solid throughout and we made ourselves extremely difficult to play against. I don't think we played that well. Plenty of misplaced passes in the first half, as well as a lack of fluidity between the players. It started to give Sheffield Wednesday some confidence as well. I am not one of the pessimistic supporters, but I would not say that we played particularly well with the ball and moving as a unit going forward. It was solid, workmanlike, and professional. Not too much to gripe about but we can be much better when in possession, both retaining it and creating chances. Our defence gives us the platform to not play too well and still win, and I think that was the case today. You could see the relief when we got the first goal. Anyway, used up my three posts for today now so I can't reply back but I still think we can play considerably better than that.

Nexstar Posted 19 March, 2011 Share Posted 19 March, 2011 Not a great first half, but what pleased me most was the way we turned it around without having to look to the bench. Nigel seems very good at identify what is going wrong and rectifying it.
Smirking_Saint Posted 19 March, 2011 Share Posted 19 March, 2011 Excellent win after a dodgy first-half. Just put Primal Scream's "Movin' On Up" on my iPod! Not really dodgy, we never looked like shipping a goal. Second half though we really kicked off, all over Wednesday.

We hoofed, i agree, but it is difficult attempting to break down a side that was so commited to not letting us get passed 10-20 yards into their own half. The second half yes i agree, we looked far far better and could have easily scored more than 3 goals. But it wasn't really dodgy, it was just not up to the same level of quality as we showed in the first half. I don't remember Wednesday ever really looking like they could score TBH, i was distinctly unimpressed by a side supposedly trying to get out of this league. S-Clarke Posted 19 March, 2011 Share Posted 19 March, 2011 It was a good solid performance, nothing special - but we never looked in trouble at any stage. Tactically I felt it wasn't right in the first half - everything was too congested and we were kind of playing into Wednesdays hands and making it easy for them to defend against us, but on the other side they rarely threatened and we were solid and controlled at the back. - lots of pretty possession and triangles from us, but little impact in the first 45. 2nd half started slow...but we eventually started picking it up and pushed Wednesday back - notably by getting wide and getting Oxo running at players down the flanks, the corner which lead to the goal was a direct result of our wing play. That knocked the stuffing out of Wednesday and from that moment on the game was won, great to get the 2nd so soon after as it really made it a comfortable end for us. Barnard's work-rate is immense and what he did to get the ball to Lambo was fantastic - but boy, what a finish by Lambo - just watched it back on the TV to see if it's as good as I thought it was....you betcha. Overall nothing to scream home about - but Wednesday are in a false position, they have far better players than their league standing shows and could have potentially been a threat - but we were professional and solid throughout and the result was never in doubt. Great day for us.

stockportsaint Posted 19 March, 2011 Share Posted 19 March, 2011 The game was probably a fairly decent reflection of most of our season. Not firing on all cylinders, fairly solid at the back, and a few moments of quality get us the win. People will moan that we aren't playing very well, and they are entitled to do that, but I am very happy with our ability to dig out results more often than not. We are right in the thick of this and whether we are playing or not, every weekend and Tuesday from now until May has something of interest going on. I was worried about Sheffield Wednesday reacting to their recent poor form tonight, but it didn't happen. I hope the same happens with Charlton on Tuesday. Pretty fair assessment - at this stage of the season results matter far more than performances. Only played well for about 20 minutes early in the 2nd half, but a few moments of quality were enough to win it. Watching on TV (unfortunately sober as recovering from a 'flu bug) it looked as though Lallana spent a lot of time away from the left flank - Harding was very often the "out ball" on the left flank. It also seemed to me that Harding gets forward and supports his winger much more than Butterfield does. Those little runs that the overlapping fullbacks do help the winger if he decides to cut inside, as it draws one of their opposing defenders away from the winger. It was quite noticeable that both Lallana and Chamberlain were up against 2 men most of the times they got the ball in the opposition half, at least until Wednesday had to start chasing the game. It was also noticeable that Chamberlain didn't get Butterfield overlapping him any where near as often, and he ended up doing it by himself, to be fair he nearly scored a belter in the 2nd half. It also seemed to me that with with Gobern out for another 2 games and therefore no natural replacement for either of them on the bench, Chaplow and particularly Hammond put themselves about considerably less than normal in terms of closing down opposition players. If I'm right in my understanding they are both close (3 bookings to be precise) to a 2 match ban, and they are both on a tightrope until the 2nd Sunday in April, when the amnesty kicks in. According to the Football League site they are both on 7 yellows and Saints have 4 games between now and the amnesty date. So they need to ensure they pick up no more than 2 yellows each in the next 4 games, although Gobern will be available again for the last 2 games before the amnesty. I know there has been much speculation about Saints signing an "emergency loan" Central Midfielder, possibly Brian Howard. What's the realistic likelihood of getting someone in, and if not, what options do we have in central midfield? Could we put Dickson in there? Or Butterfield with Richardson going to right back? Looks like Schneiderlin is out for some time, if not the rest of the season. The OS lists Callum McNish as a central midfielder, anyone seen him play and able to say whether he could slot into Hammond's/Chaplow's boots? Central midfield is the engine of the team, and I fear that if we don't have options there it will hamper our charge for the line. http://www.football-league.co.uk/page/Discipline/0,,10794~201010280~25,00.html

Wes Tender Posted 19 March, 2011 Share Posted 19 March, 2011 It was a very poor first half overall, perhaps because there is a lot of pressure on the players, pressure which is exacerbated by the growing number of games we have in hand over teams above us who already have the points on the board. The situation was heightened today because we played the match later than most, but at least we knew that we could gain two points on Huddersfield today with a win. There appears to be a pattern developing over the past few matches, that we begin nervously, lack fluidity and invite pressure onto ourselves during the first half. The players are tentative and the crowd is subdued. Then Adkins must either calm them with a metaphorical arm around their shoulders, or galvanise them into action with a kick up the backside, because we often come out the second half almost a different team. SW, who had gradually come more and more into the game towards the last 20 minutes of the half, must have been told that it was in their hands to go and produce an upset, because they came out to the second half all guns blazing. But we have an experienced defence, who do not flap and they weathered the storm and provided the base for our own midfield and strikers to gain a stranglehold on the match. A great corner provided Fonte with the chance to lose his marker and head in a goal, which steadied the nerves and confidence and belief began to grow. A good assist from Barnard, lively throughout, gave Lambert the chance he needed to continue his recent return to form and place the ball to the keeper's right and secure the three points. SW hadn't looked as if they had enough ammunition to overturn a two goal lead and indeed as the half continued towards its conclusion, it was Saints that were looking the more likely to increase the scoreline. So altogether the important thing was the three points, but the added bonus is the clean sheet, the closing in on Huddersfield and the rare winning of a televised game. Maybe with the next televised game, we ought to be thinking in terms of those we have had under Adkins, as apart from a loss against ManUre where we impressed all the neutrals with our flair and dominated them for 70 minutes before their star subs tipped it their way, the other matches have been an exciting draw against Posh and this win. Lazlo78 Posted 20 March, 2011 Share Posted 20 March, 2011 Great win, job well done. At the end of the 1st half, I felt we let them into the game, but in the 2nd half we took better control of the game. We're still not scoring goals for fun a la Peterboro, but we have a solid, patient team, that will keep working their socks off for 90 minutes. I think I heard the commentators note that as well: that if we kept the same amount of possession in the 2nd half as in the 1st, we'd surely create some good chances... Kelvin looked good on a few occasions coming out to claim crosses. Lamberts ball control was excellent for the early episode that lead to a booking to their centre back. League table gets increasingly interesting every week. Bournemouth collapsing, Huddersfield dropping points here and there... PS. If you need a reminder of how things could have been (and more often than not have been in the last 6-7 years) just skim through this utterly depressing thread: http://www.owlstalk.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=148019&st=0 ...
