VectisSaint Posted 18 March, 2011 Posted 18 March, 2011 Think the following team made up of transfers would take some beating (although even if they were beaten they would be a joy to watch): Shilton, Golac, Watson, Richards, Mills, Case, Ball, Osgood, Keegan, Channon, R Davies (and still had to leave out Peach, Steele, Ruddock, Boyer, Killer, Marian). I thought about adding Skacel but not sure he has signed yet.
VectisSaint Posted 18 March, 2011 Posted 18 March, 2011 roughly something like this... delap 4m delgado 3.25m phillips 3.25m prutton 2.5m van damme 2.5m niemi 2.5m killer 2.5m crouch 2m rasiak 2m Just goes to prove that with a couple of notable exceptions, big money transfers for us have been a complete waste of time. 17.5m of wasted money IMHO, 7m worth of good investment
bender Posted 18 March, 2011 Posted 18 March, 2011 Killer Niemi keegan Beattie - got him plus a load of cash for Davies. Then a year later we got Davies back in return for peanuts + ostenstad. Marsden Richards Shilts Armstrong Marion Kachloul
dubai_phil Posted 18 March, 2011 Posted 18 March, 2011 Surprised so few mentioned Jimmy Case, Obviously the Keegan moment was something the youngsters just couldn't ever understand for sheer shock value. As good servants go Dave Armstrong wasn't a bad shout either and of course the signing of England's Centre Half Dave Watson with Chris Nicholl - possibly two of the best CB's of their time. Psycho was great value for us fans, and let's not forget Mick Mills who was solid for us and even oooh Terry Hurlock on his day. Ossie of course gets many mentions & rightly so, but what about re-uniting what had been (and were) the Div 1's best strike force? Ted McDougall & Phil Boyer? OK so they played in an era with those horrid shirts but....
chrisobee Posted 18 March, 2011 Posted 18 March, 2011 Off the top of my head and without viewing previous posts : Golac Pahars Keegan Rodrigues Ball ( twice!) Richards Boyer Eklund - his injury was really sad Osgood Ron Davies Michael Svensson Shilton
Badger Posted 18 March, 2011 Posted 18 March, 2011 Ivan Golac & Mark Dennis 2 best defenders we have ever had Best full backs ever for us.
The9 Posted 18 March, 2011 Posted 18 March, 2011 Chris Marsden! He was no football genius - hard working midfielder maybe Whoosh.
Gis Posted 18 March, 2011 Posted 18 March, 2011 what about re-uniting what had been (and were) the Div 1's best strike force? Ted McDougall & Phil Boyer? OK so they played in an era with those horrid shirts but.... wasn't Ted's first match a 6-2 thumping @ Charlton...................seem to remember being back in the bar at Waterloo before the match had even finished. It did get a lot better than that later on though, a great pair of strikers, so much better than simply the sum of two decent players.
hamster Posted 18 March, 2011 Posted 18 March, 2011 Dave Peach Tony Funnell Keen is a given but surely a world cup winner (Bally) is a rare treat for any little family club like we were back then
david in sweden Posted 19 March, 2011 Posted 19 March, 2011 I don't know much about Saints before I started watching them in the early 70's but since then... 1. Keegan - for shock value and putting Saints back on the map 2. Peter Rodrigues - stability in defence and FA Cup captain 3. Alan Ball - past his best but brought the best out of Stevie Williams amongst others 4. Dave Armstrong - so under-rated. As good defending as he was in attack. The complete left midfielder 5. Peter Shilton - at the time STILL the best goalie in the country. If only Keegan had stayed another season...... 6. Dean Richards RIP...one great season and then a massive profit in selling him to Spurs - LOVE IT!! 7. Claus - 10 years? great service and a constant steadying influence at the back 8. CMFG.....brought the best out of Bridgie and earnt us a fortune as a result -and he was a legend himself! 9. Super Marian??? - kept us in the Premiership, along with Matty, for an extra few years 10. Rickie Lambert - a bit sneaky, but I am including him on the strength of his goals in the next 10 or so games that sees us promoted back to the Championship!! The memories are starting to fade a little now I am only following from afar, but every one of those made an impact for me, anyhow, but I am sure there are plenty of others I have forgotten.... I think I could find a lot more than only 10, but I'd go along with all pf those Aussie Dog ..good choice. I'd have to add: Ron Davies and Ivan Golac, too.
Cabrone Posted 19 March, 2011 Posted 19 March, 2011 Agree with most of the above. I'd also like to add Colin Clarke to the list, scored a lot of goals in his time here yet never really got the recognition he deserved IMO + Glenn Cockerill, skillfull midfielder who gave us sterling service in the 80's\90's. Also the addition of Shilton\Wright\Dennis\Mills gave us the meanest defence we've ever had. We got 2nd in 84' because of that defence rather than our goalscoring (how many 1-0's did we get that season?). Other notable names in my time of watching Saints would be Armstrong, Marsden, Case, Pahars, Beattie, Richards, Svensson (killer - not the other one), Niemi, Crouch.
Badger Posted 19 March, 2011 Posted 19 March, 2011 Assuming Ted Bates is not a signing, and signing youth players ie Paine are not included then : 1)KK - a signing that shook the world 2)Alan Ball - took the gospel according to Lawrie onto the pitch, promotion and competing with the best followed 3)Ron Davies - what would he be worth now ? The above are runaway leaders - although the following would be in my top 10, but don't have time to put them in order of preference: 4)Jimmy Gabriel - inspired signing who stabilised the defence and kept us up 5)John McGrath - as Gabriel 6)Brian O'Neil - most 'combative' midfielder I've seen for Saints. He - with helped from the two above, and Fisher - created 'The Alehouse'. 7)Ivan Golac - the best import ever 8 Jimmy Case - took over from Ball (£20,000 !!!) 9)Peter Rodrigues 10) Pahars - possibly shades it from other recent signings as he seemed to inspire us at a desperate time, without which we'd have dropped out of the Premiership and St Mary's might never have happened. Agree that David Armstrong,Niemi, and Michael Svennson are worthy of a mention.
TheCholulaKid Posted 19 March, 2011 Posted 19 March, 2011 Alan McLoughlin - remember being really excited at spending that much money on a player. There was no way he couldn't be brilliant.
TijuanaTim Posted 19 March, 2011 Posted 19 March, 2011 1. Big Ron - No question, without his goals in 66-67-68-69 we'd still be small time. 2. Psycho - Left back and winger all in one, flawless technique, alas flawed temperment. 3. Shilts - World's # 1 at the time. 4. Keggy - That woke everyone up huh? 5. Ted Bates - The man is a lifetime Saints legend. 6. James Beattie - So many important contributions and a healthy profit. 7. Mark Wright - Paid peanuts from Oxford, shrewd by big Lawrie. 8. Baldy Armstrong - Majestic out there. 9. Bally - A World Cup winner in red and white strips. 10. Killer - So good - so tragic. 5.
