SO16_Saint Posted 16 March, 2011 Share Posted 16 March, 2011 Anyone had one of these? I got mine yesterday, for 07/08 & 08/09. It says I've underpaid tax by £1300. Not sure how, because my tax code was lower due to having a company car, and only now is it back to normal due to no longer having the car. Is there any way/point contesting this? Gingeletiss Posted 16 March, 2011 Share Posted 16 March, 2011 Under for me by £500 give or take a few.
Golden Balls Posted 16 March, 2011 Share Posted 16 March, 2011 I'm due the same sort of bill due to having a company car. Only had it for about 6 months so shouldnt be too bad
SO16_Saint Posted 16 March, 2011 Author Share Posted 16 March, 2011 Have called the HMRC and they were really helpful actually. One of the underpayments was due to an error within the HR department of a previous employer - where I changed companies part way through a tax year, the HR dept didnt use previous income earned and I got duplicate allowances. HMRC said to contact the previous company to fight it with them.... done! the other bits I didn't really understand and will look into later. either way, Im sure Im gonna have to pay it all... what is it they say? 2 things are guaranteed.... death and taxes.... Colinjb Posted 16 March, 2011 Share Posted 16 March, 2011 Same kind of thing for me. 900 quid under due to a discrepancy with my company car allowance in 2008/9 and 2009/10. Now will be paying it off over the course of this upcoming year. Bast*rds.
Sheaf Saint Posted 16 March, 2011 Share Posted 16 March, 2011 Oh great, I had a company car up to september 08 so I expect I will be getting one of these letters soon. Will probably wipe out the smallish rebate that I am due from them.
SO16_Saint Posted 16 March, 2011 Author Share Posted 16 March, 2011 the second underpayment (£600 odd) was due to a company car not being noted on their system - despite me calling them and telling them! what's the point, if they're just going to ignore you
SuperMikey Posted 16 March, 2011 Share Posted 16 March, 2011 I'm actually owed £200 by HMRC, I was wrongly taxed for 4 months when I got a job at Boots in September 09. I phoned HMRC and they said they have no record of me ever paying any tax, even though it is clearly on my pay-slips. Help?
Patrick Bateman Posted 16 March, 2011 Share Posted 16 March, 2011 You have to ask why our tax system is so bloody over-complicated. It's ridiculous.
Rory Posted 16 March, 2011 Share Posted 16 March, 2011 I had the same problem and it was only resolved last month. The letter said I owe just under a grand because I worked for a company in Northern Ireland as well as my full-time job in the South-West. Yeah, likely. I think they mixed me up with someone with the same name. After countless phone calls, I had to write a letter explaining the problem because it seemed they weren't believing me over the phone. Anyway, it was finally sorted out but the ineptness of the department is shocking.
Sheaf Saint Posted 16 March, 2011 Share Posted 16 March, 2011 You have to ask why our tax system is so bloody over-complicated. It's ridiculous. It's so bloody over-complicated to try and dissuade people from actually chasing up the HMRC to get back what they are owed. It's nuts. I have been trying for months now to get back a relatively small amount that I overpaid in 2009/10 due to my employers at the time neglecting to process my P46 and keeping me on an emergency tax code for longer than necessary. The hoops I have had to jump through so far are just stupid and I still haven't received my rebate. Every time I provide the requested information the HMRC just come back to me wanting more - most recently they needed my P45 from the Jobcentre for the period I was claiming JSA during 2008/09. I have virtually given up hope of ever seeing the rebate, and it seems to me that they deliberately make claiming back so difficult and complicated in the hope that some people just won't bother and they can keep the money. LGTL Posted 16 March, 2011 Share Posted 16 March, 2011 They will owe me a rebate of over £500 come April 1st, there is no chance I won't be chasing it up, and I will become their worst nightmare until I get it!

It should be very easy to reclaim. You can fill in a reclaim form fairly easily. from recollection you need an R80 form but I'll try and take 5 minutes to check later on today. Drop me a pm if you need a hand.
Clapham Saint Posted 17 March, 2011 Share Posted 17 March, 2011 Nope. If you've stopped working (which I'm guessing from your post) then you need a P50 http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/pdfs/p50.pdf

They gave me my P60 at the end of the tax year and the total of tax paid on the slip was £0.00. The money definitely didn't get paid into my account and neither HMRC or Boots have any official record (bar my pay-slips) of me ever paying tax on my earnings. Normally I wouldn't be so p!ssed off but I took on extra shifts before christmas to earn a bit of money to enjoy myself over the holiday season and then every single penny that I earned through those shifts was taxed away from me, so I never saw any of the money. My yearly earnings were around £1300, quite a considerable amount under the taxable threshold.. I have been on the blower about this to them before but they sounded very uninterested and distant (not hard to blame them if you're working for HMRC) and didn't offer me any solutions to my problem. You would think they almost wanted to keep my money...

You best bet is to try and get hold of somebody at boots (good luck) to challenge what they've paid you. If you can show them your P60, the discrepancy with your monthly pay slips and show that the amounts hitting your account match the pay slips (from which tax was wrongly deducted) you might get somewhere but its likely to be a struggle.
