SO16_Saint Posted 15 March, 2011 Share Posted 15 March, 2011 I've just started running again, and am getting really bad pack pains whilst running. Is this normal, and how can I get rid...or will it go after time??

Redbul Posted 15 March, 2011 Share Posted 15 March, 2011 If you have done absolutely nothing for a while then this could be just a lack of core strength that will get better and improve as your core muscles strengthen. But if it persists I'd get your back checked out and also get some properly fitted running shoes. I can't stress the importance of well fitted running shoes enough. Go somewhere like Alexandra Sports in P*mpey or there's a place in Chandlers Ford. They'll check for over/under pronation and give you proper advice on the shoes you need depending on your style of running.
SO16_Saint Posted 15 March, 2011 Author Share Posted 15 March, 2011 Cheers for the comments. It's at the base of the back. I hadn't 'ran' for about a year until last Wednesday, but had played 5 a side for 6 months without anywhere near as much pain. The pain is bad enough to make me stop every now and again to stretch it out. I'm hoping it's just the body working itself out. I spent £45 ish quid on the shoes so not dirt cheap but nothing too expensive either.

Might it be worth it to try a softer surface (cross country)? Easier on the back (and on the knees and ankles too)

Baj Posted 15 March, 2011 Share Posted 15 March, 2011 sorry but cost of the shoes is irrelevant. Were you properly fitted or did you just go into a sports shop and say "im size 10"?

egg Posted 15 March, 2011 Share Posted 15 March, 2011 Shoes will be the main issue. Probably not got enough support and and cushioning. Alexanders or similar will check your feet and running style and fit some shoes that will sort you out. Tight hamstrings and/or glutes will also tighten the lower back so stretch it out. Quickfire Double Posted 16 March, 2011 Share Posted 16 March, 2011 Definitely worth a proper running gait assessment. I naively started out in a pair of Nike Shox a few years back. I quickly found myself (and my shattered ankles) in a running shop picking up motion control shoes...

You absolutely should not be running without proper running shoes. Recommend you dont run again until you have some. I use Just Run in eastleigh
SO16_Saint Posted 16 March, 2011 Author Share Posted 16 March, 2011 Cheers Baj. What's the point of sports shops selling running shoes if they are just going to injure people?
Baj Posted 16 March, 2011 Share Posted 16 March, 2011 Cheers Baj. What's the point of sports shops selling running shoes if they are just going to injure people? Basically, economics. The wont produce shoes with the correct width and size, you can only buy size. It's easier to knock out generic shoes that are just based on shoes sizes to sell to the masses. Think of it as buying a cheap suit versus (almost) a tailored suit. You need to buy shoes that are correct for your pronation, gait, feet width and lastly, size! Generally what I do is go into Just Run, find the right shoes for me, make sure I get on with them for a few months, then buy a second pair exactly the same over the internet a bit cheaper. I've only had to buy from there twice, but at least you are getting fitted correctly. Also if you still find you are suffering, ASICS do a road show around the country, stops in Alton every now and then. On these road shoes they will put you on a running machine with a video camera and properly assess how you run. For me, this found out that I had one leg longer than the other! Added a spacer to my left shoe, result? 10k 15k runs with now after effects
