beatlesaint Posted 17 March, 2011 Posted 17 March, 2011 wish we had the depth of Brighton or Peterborough or Huddersfield or B'mth The only place we haven't got depth is central midfield. We have three good ones and little else. One is injured, possibly for the majority or rest of the saeson so we have two. Gobern even before the red card is ok to come on for 15-20 minutes but I wouldn't prefer to see him than Chaplow or Hammond. We desperately need someone who can come in and do a job in that position because with just Chaplow and Hammond available for selection we are playing Russian roulette and if we are to make the automatic promotion place we cannot afford to do that.
Rebel Posted 17 March, 2011 Posted 17 March, 2011 Chaplow and Hammond are probably nearing suspensions and we shouldn't be playing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain week in week out. Dickson and Butterfield - not too mention Lambert - could play in midfield - but we could do with another playmaker / creative midfielder whether Gobern and Schneiderlin are out or not.
Lallana's Left Peg Posted 17 March, 2011 Posted 17 March, 2011 Its not a case of dropping anyone, its a case of having quality in depth so, with the number of games we have coming up, we can keep players fresh and not have to play them for every minute of every game.....and thats not even considering injuries. Whilst I agree with your idea, it is not realistic to expect players like Brian Howard to drop a division to sit on our bench. What is his motivation for doing this and getting some minutes for Saints when he would get the same chance at Reading for a better team in a better division? It's just not realistic. The only player we get from a league higher above to sit on a bench is a youngster nowhere near the first team at their parent club at the moment.

Chez Posted 17 March, 2011 Posted 17 March, 2011 wish we had the depth of Brighton or Peterborough or Huddersfield or B'mth wish we were top of the table ten points clear.
beatlesaint Posted 17 March, 2011 Posted 17 March, 2011 we shouldn't be playing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain week in week out. No we shouldn't but even though Adkins has been saying since late October/early November that we have to look after him and not overplay him he hasnt exactly been pulled out of many league games has he ? And, unless he gets injured - God forbid - the last 12 games of the season would not be a good time to start IMHO.
PaulGilchrist_76 Posted 17 March, 2011 Posted 17 March, 2011 Why are some people on here so worried about us signing good players? Do you want Saints to stay in League One forever? There is absolutely no harm in having competition for places. In January, we signed two new cr*p players, what was the point of that?

Actually I think we are pretty vulnerable where goalkeepers are concerned. We have KD...AND THEN ? BB is injured so Foecast is currently next in line. Agree with you about a MF though.I still think Oakley CDAJFU.
Matthew Le God Posted 17 March, 2011 Posted 17 March, 2011 In January, we signed two new cr*p players, what was the point of that? Saints signed Guly, Chaplow, Lallana, Forte and N'Guessan in January. The former three I'd hardly call "crap", the later two we haven't seen enough of to make a judgement.

Including Lallana is stretching it, when people talk about signings they mean new players not extensions.
Matthew Le God Posted 17 March, 2011 Posted 17 March, 2011 Including Lallana is stretching it, when people talk about signings they mean new players not extensions. If he hadn't signed, he wouldn't have been a Saints player beyond the summer. The club had to show ambition and money for signing on fee, wage increase, agent fees etc to keep him at the club rather than moving to a Premier League/Championship club.

All that may be so, it doesn't mean he should be included in a list of Jan signing's. Financially it doesn't do SFC any harm having Lallana on a longer contract.
AussieDog Posted 18 March, 2011 Posted 18 March, 2011 so you don't think Lallana got a decent pay rise out of his new contract? All that may be so, it doesn't mean he should be included in a list of Jan signing's. Financially it doesn't do SFC any harm having Lallana on a longer contract.
NickG Posted 18 March, 2011 Posted 18 March, 2011 wish we were top of the table ten points clear. maybe we have too much depth

Fan The Flames Posted 18 March, 2011 Posted 18 March, 2011 so you don't think Lallana got a decent pay rise out of his new contract? I would assume unless he has a crap agent that his wages went up, but so would his resale value. All that aside he should still not be included in a list of Jan signings.

The former three I'd hardly call "crap", the later two we haven't seen enough of to make a judgement. not sure I agree with that. Nguessen has had enough game time to show signs that he has potential. IMO I have seen enough to make a judgement that he wont make a significant impact in our remaining games this year. from what i understand he is a confidence player and he clearly is running on empty. Who knows whether NA can get that back for him over a longer period of time but this season, no chance

sammysaint Posted 18 March, 2011 Posted 18 March, 2011 I don't think the. Forte is crap I think he will be quite good for us as a 3rd choice striker as for NG not sure I think he's not worth signing past this season he looks good at times but he won't cut it in the championship. We only need cover for 4 weeks then Oscar and Guly will be back
Gemmel Posted 18 March, 2011 Posted 18 March, 2011 Including Lallana is stretching it, when people talk about signings they mean new players not extensions. Couldnt disagree more. Lallana signing was huge. No other club in league 1 could have pulled that off. Ive been a fan since 1977 and would put Lallanas signing in the top 10 (Maybe even top 5) signings ive ever seen at Saints

Gemmel Posted 18 March, 2011 Posted 18 March, 2011 It wasn't a new signing though, which is the point being debated. It was better than any new signing we could have made. If people don't understand how significant it was, then nothing anyone writes on a message board is going to change their opinion....but for what its worth I expect he was paid a seven figure signing on fee, equal to any transfer fee a Marquee signing would have cost.
Chez Posted 18 March, 2011 Posted 18 March, 2011 maybe we have too much depth if the worst does happen, have you mind up you mind as to the reasons why we didn't get promoted, or will you take the line of `that's football'? This board is going to be ugly. Promotion is a must.

OldNick Posted 18 March, 2011 Posted 18 March, 2011 to me not signing a midfielder minimum, is reckless. i know Im in the minority but the impetus can easily be lost. I read on here that we could have 9 games in a month. If we fail to make 2nd i can't see us having the strength physically or mentally to go up. I wonder if indeed the club is being sold on the quiet and NC does not wish to spend, i see no reason why we have not added to the club, even the manager has stated he needed to look for a loan player
SO16_Saint Posted 18 March, 2011 Posted 18 March, 2011 just heard that there's still a chance he could be playing tomorrow. Trying to leave it late to bugger up Wednesday's tactics....

I agree it was important that Lallana signed an extension and I haven't seen one single person who has said otherwise. I myself strongly feel that for all the money we've spent in the last eighteen months, if Lallana had left then we could forget about promotion. However, it wasn't a NEW signing, which was the point being debated - not how important it was.

I think it rubbishes the rumours about Brian Howard and he stresses that there is no point disrupting the setup by bringing in someone who isnt going to have a big impact in the side. They are actively looking for someone but that someone has to be right. He also hinted that some managers cant bring in someone until someone else is offloaded, which I took to mean that reading are looking to buy someone and need to offload howard so they are pushing him out there and getting the rumour about. I think something will happen as Chaplow made it very clear in his interview that Adkins is actively looking and that they all know we are short in midfield with chaplow and hammond being the only midfielders and both being on so many yellows.. I just dont think it will be anyone that people are expecting...

Perhaps Reading have a chance to buy Leigertwood from QPR (doubt that he'd fancy missing out on the EPL though) and they've just extended Tabb, with the Turkish lad who's doing great things this season perhaps Howard will be surplus to requirements.

SaintNeil90 Posted 18 March, 2011 Posted 18 March, 2011 (edited) I thought Jonny Fordham said there was going to be an update on Howards future and saints in todays edition of GetReading. Theres nothing new on their website today as far as I can see. Edited 18 March, 2011 by SaintNeil90
Glasgow_Saint Posted 18 March, 2011 Posted 18 March, 2011 If we don’t get promoted this season we definitely will next season. We will walk the league (next season) p.s Lallana is not a new signing - anyone including him as such is a silly person
hypochondriac Posted 18 March, 2011 Posted 18 March, 2011 So we aren't getting him then despite strong evidence from some on here that he is available and is achievable. I really hope that we get someone in of comparable ability. I haven't been impressed with our signings bar Chaplow for a while (and before the dullard starts, Lallana is NOT a signing, cannot believe this is still being argued.)

Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 18 March, 2011 Posted 18 March, 2011 Let's hope this doesn't end up one of those 6/7 page threads about someone who never actually signs. I've lost count of the amount of threads we've had like this in the last year!! Looking like this is going to be added to just that group!
Window Cleaner Posted 18 March, 2011 Posted 18 March, 2011 http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/saints/news/8918518.Reading_wait_to_hear_back_from_Saints_about_Howard/?ref=twt Perhaps Morgan is nearer fitness than anyone knows.Anyway with 2 games in the next 4 days and then nothing for the next 10 perhaps we ain't all that desperate. Not as desperate as Reading seem to be shot of the player anyway.
hypochondriac Posted 18 March, 2011 Posted 18 March, 2011 I think it will say a lot if we don't get him and go for a cheaper option. I think that is the tactic we have employed for a while.
