derry Posted 16 March, 2011 Posted 16 March, 2011 Echo say Adkins approached Reading last week so the Gobern ban was not the reason. Schneiderlin's long term injury was likely to be the reason. They say there are still major stumbling blocks. I should say so. Howard has a good contract with Reading that still has about 18 months to go. He is on good wages and not likely to take a drop. Unlikely Reading would fund some of it. Then there is the issue on playing Div 1 football. I doubt Howard would want that long term. Then there is the fee to make the deal long term if we persuaded him to stay....promotion would be the only persuasion in my opinion. Reading will try to sqeeze as much as they can. With this out in the open on in the media and forums will this ruin any talks? Who is manipulating the media. Reading? Howard? Howards friends? It certainly won't be Southampton FC. It might happen, then again we know the history of so called deals when they have broken before they are finalized. Good it it happens but I am not holding my breath. Ron I am at home with my son. Brian is talking to him via texts at this minute. Nothing is happening, Saints know what his contract is and all he is looking for is the same figures. He is happy to sign on loan and permanently if we are promoted. He isn't talking to anyone except friends. It seems the Reading end is leaking like a sieve. Unless his contract is accepted it won't happen. The conversation is along the lines that the Echo knows something he doesn't. The sarcastic response was It looks that way. I'll let you know if anything moves. I just hope that this Echo/media thing doesn't bugger it up because Cortese won't like it. He hasn't spoken to Saints yet but his agent has.
Mustapha Fag Posted 16 March, 2011 Posted 16 March, 2011 Brian has been saying for a long time he would love to come back to Saints, as has Wade Elliott, but always hinged on money. Asked him this week about this rumour, he shrugs his shoulders gives a grin and says nothing, could be happening, but like Weston said we know we have pulled out of leaked deals before so who knows By the way the rumour of 700k has had Reading fans laughing, havnt seen enough of him lately to know if hes off form or unable to get in due to good form of the other midfielders. Either way, good deal IF it comes off

Am I on a Reading forum then as it seems like you are happy to print your knowledge as well lol. Im happy you are spilling the beans though.
stmusicdude Posted 16 March, 2011 Posted 16 March, 2011 What are you basing on Forte being a good player...how many times have you seen him play?? 10 goals in 118 games yeah bloody hell lets sign that sort of striker rather than a proven one! Christ it ****es me off that some fans get moaned at for having some ambition. Look ambition up, they are not moaning at people because they have ambition, only those who get on players backs for nothing .. If the cap fits wear it! *****ing at our players has never proved ambition .
trousers Posted 16 March, 2011 Posted 16 March, 2011 I just hope that this Echo/media thing doesn't bugger it up because Cortese won't like it. Nutshell. I think we can safely rule out this happening on that basis alone. IMHO of course.

There is two pages on today's Echo saying it is a done deal which could well anger Cortese and cause him to ditch it. I'm saying no it isn't. It is rediculous to pre-empt the official announcement. Brian has never made any secret of the fact he wanted to play for Saints at some point. Pardew wanted him but he wasn't interested in long term div 1. If he is going to sign it will happen quickly if all the details are settled. At the moment there is little fact in the leaks purely speculation. I hope it doesn't bugger the whole thing up.

Fantastic that you have the contact and keeping us informed but in a perverse way the deal is likely to be harmed as NC will see that BH is being indiscreet and so may well pull the plug. We know he is of that type to do so. I know you would never harm the club but in a funny way you may torpedo the deal by being so open and honest.

SO16_Saint Posted 16 March, 2011 Posted 16 March, 2011 I know it's happened in the past, but it's just mad that NC would hamper our chances of promotion because someone has spoken out of line. Surely promotion is the be all and end all.

SO16_Saint Posted 16 March, 2011 Posted 16 March, 2011 I think you will find he pulled the plug on the Ward deal last season as it was leaked my point exactly. crazy

Surely promotion is the be all and end all. Well that reporter thinks hes coming to us, just a few things to iron out contract wise
Saint_clark Posted 16 March, 2011 Posted 16 March, 2011 Well we don't actually know the reason we pulled out of the Ward deal, that's all just speculation.
SO16_Saint Posted 16 March, 2011 Posted 16 March, 2011 Well we don't actually know the reason we pulled out of the Ward deal, that's all just speculation. true enough

The Echo has a complete back page and big photograph plus more on the inside sports pages. Anything I put on here to try and balance that sensationalism won't hurt as it will be seen as factual. I don't think Brian is doing anything and the only reason my son is being told is that they are good friends and he is asking my questions, as I am aware of the damage that can be done through speculation. My read on this is that we are now in a great position to get promoted, but still misfiring in central midfield, Brian has been identified as an available short and long term solution to give us the direction we need in the middle. He has been a target for a long time and I do know that Pardew was chasing him last summer but he signed a new 3 year contract at Reading and was made captain and didn't want to drop into division 1. Bearing in mind the set up for bringing in players he is still on the committee's list. I think that in the position we are in Cortese would see the sense of strengthening now, especially as Reading look like they will let Brian leave, Southampton is his home and was his first club, and with his help, provided we do get promoted it would take away the barrier of dropping down.
derry Posted 16 March, 2011 Posted 16 March, 2011 Prob is just texting and twitting Does anyone know roughly, what he`s on at Reading Yes.
benjii Posted 16 March, 2011 Posted 16 March, 2011 Well we don't actually know the reason we pulled out of the Ward deal, that's all just speculation. Exactly. I see the latest Saints Web "fact" is that we will pull out of a deal if it gets reported which is obviously bull****.
beatlesaint Posted 16 March, 2011 Posted 16 March, 2011 So if he is on £15k and thats what he wants to come here for 10 weeks that would see us through to the play offs (if needed) that would cost £150k.............surely if it gives us a better chance of promotion that is a bargain. Dont see the point in negotiating for next season. If we dont go up he wont come and any haggling over a permanent deal's terms becomes irrelevant so could wait until the season's end.
Saint_Ash Posted 16 March, 2011 Posted 16 March, 2011 Reading have a day off training by the looks of it. Also the reporter matey doesn't think the leaks will scupper the deal. He doesn't know out Nic does he?
derry Posted 16 March, 2011 Posted 16 March, 2011 Exactly. I see the latest Saints Web "fact" is that we will pull out of a deal if it gets reported which is obviously bull****. We do know there is bad feeling between Cortese and the Echo. The premature big story today won't help that.

Hard life being a footballer...
COMEONYOUREDS Posted 16 March, 2011 Posted 16 March, 2011 Does loan window close tomorrow? according to the CMS article on BBC, deadline is tomorrow
derry Posted 16 March, 2011 Posted 16 March, 2011 And would we be able to afford it? It wouldn't break our reported levels.
exit2 Posted 16 March, 2011 Author Posted 16 March, 2011 Howard will be on no more than what we are paying the likes of Lambert Fonte etc if we do a deal with Reading it will be along the lines of we pick up 50 % of his wages plus any additional bonus scheme. That way we get a decent player on a decent wage and reading lower their wages bill for a player who isn't palying. Everyone one is happy
Rory Posted 16 March, 2011 Posted 16 March, 2011 Howard would be a great signing, why are some fans moaning? I've said it before, but I miss the days of finding out we've signed someone on Ceefax page 302. OK, I've been a user of SaintsForever and its inceptions since late 90s/early 2000 but it really has become awash with moans and groans over potential players. I think it all stems from the bitterness that grew following our relegation from the Premier League, that's all I can pinpoint it on. Why can't we just wait and judge players when they're in red and white, rather than writing them off before they've even stepped foot in the dressing room?

I'm not sure Reading are interested in contributing.

It will be for business reasons if it doesn't go ahead, assuming it is on the cards anyway.

Maybe but there has to come a point where the positives in bringing someone in outweigh annoyance at not being the first to say it! Howard would definitely improve us so maybe NC needs to rise above the Echo's oneupmanship.

Saint Charlie Posted 16 March, 2011 Posted 16 March, 2011 The Echo is the problem Nick, a complete back page and banner headlines. I bet Cortese is unhappy about that being broken prematurely before there is agreement on anything. He won't like being in the Premier League will he?

I wouldn't put it past the Echo to print this story to spite Cortese. I hope he sees through it if that is what it is and gets on and signs him.
derry Posted 16 March, 2011 Posted 16 March, 2011 He won't like being in the Premier League will he? I can't wait.
Charlie Wayman Posted 16 March, 2011 Posted 16 March, 2011 Ok great so now when NA signs someone we have never heard off there will be a massive wave of disappointment and comments that either a) saints wont spend the appropriate cash or b) NA doesnt have the gravitas to attract a face. Add to the fact that the fans will turn on him at home after 14 minutes of his debut and then boo him off. Clearly im talking about myself here and not all the other tolerant and realistic fans we have I've never heard of him either, so not signing a player I've never heard of is just typical of the Saints... effing Nige!
up and away Posted 16 March, 2011 Posted 16 March, 2011 I think you will find he pulled the plug on the Ward deal last season as it was leaked We had two enquiries out at the same time For Ward and Seaborne. Both players I doubt were to be signed, just the manic nature of the January transfer window. You can say Cortese was ruthless but nothing to do with the leak, the main damage was because Coventry were openly discussing the move. I expect we would have been prepared to pay Wards salary, but not completely happy and when the preferred offer came along, end of story. It's just the fact we went and signed Seaborne that promoted all the issues, pulling out even at late a stage is far from unknown.
CanadaSaint Posted 16 March, 2011 Posted 16 March, 2011 This is how Cortese's "principles" will be tempered, because he didn't get where he is without learning from experience. Leaks are a fact of life in football and there are big sieves, leaking everything, and little sieves, leaking some things. There is no leakproof club of any size or stature. If he can't have complete control, which he can't, he'll have to settle for small leaks. The alternative, in this case, is to pull out of a potential deal on the kind of player we desperately need - possibly the last piece of the promotion jigsaw. That would be a "cut off his nose to spite his face thing."

It's just the fact we went and signed Seaborne that promoted all the issues, pulling out even at late a stage is far from unknown. I thought the counter-explanation at the time was that Cov conveniently forgot that West Ham were still owed money from the previous sale and that we would have to pay West Ham for the "free transfer"? Saints decided that the only cost involved in a free transfer should just be wages and signing on fee ... perfectly reasonable, I guess?
VectisSaint Posted 16 March, 2011 Posted 16 March, 2011 Out of interest, why are we getting so excited about a player who doesn't seem to be able to get a regular place in the Reading team this season? I know he's a local lad and all, and he has a good record in the past, but maybe there is a reason he is not playing. Still he has started 16 times more than Antonio in the League - what happened there? Can't believe Antonio has not made a sinle League start all season, yet Reading were so keen to keep him. Sometimes football doesn't make much sense.
Viking Warrior Posted 16 March, 2011 Posted 16 March, 2011 I trust this thread is not descending into an anti NC thread
VectisSaint Posted 16 March, 2011 Posted 16 March, 2011 has he signed yet? No, Rudi is back with Hearts
