If he was that highly thought of why have we never had any offers?

(welcome back btw)

How do you know we havn't had any offers ??

Personally, he is our best CM by a long way, his touch, his ability on the ball, his passing range but more importantly his range is far better then the players around him most of the time.

Some of the balls he plays to the wide players is....at times....sublime.

Schnedierlin really is one of the most overated players we have! really cant see what the fuss is about yes he has natural talent but he rarely uses it and he has a very questionable temprement, seriously his scoring record is truely truely awful when you compareit to his ability and yes I know its not his job to score. I know hes a popular player on here but this is my opinion.

One thing worse than an Idiot is a sight-impaired Idiot... you get my point oh great minority of one!

Poor show old bean, the chap is allowed his opinion especially when he states its his opinion.

For someone like yourself who is quite often in the minority of one this is a bit rich isn't it ?

Morgan has been our best midfielder for about 6 games in the second half of this season. Up to that point his stats showed up like a glorified Benali, his defensive play previously was petulant and did not work for the team. Recently he has performed the holding role superbly, but we are only talking about a half a dozen or so games. I really don't think there is any panic about midfield, both Harding and Butterfield can be pushed up there and Gobern will be available after the weekend.

I think we are, very lacking in decent cover for central midfield, especially if one of the current two gets injured or suspended.

I will be very disappointed if we dont bring someone into the building before Thursday's deadline.

I know this is pointless abd probaly already known, but I've been speaking to my manager at work who use to play football with Brian Howard and also lived in the same road tonight.

Apparntly he spoke to him last week abd just said he wanted to come to us, but we wouldent stump up the wages ( about 15-25k )

The person that told me this is a norwitch fan so he has no reason to lie

Posted

15-25k is ridiculous at League 1 table and would probably cause dressing room undress and for what ??

He is not a million miles better than what we have, the fact he supports the saints does not make him a better player.

Posted
You rate him then? why?

Because he is a player who can keep possession and lay off a pass even under pressure and because our midfield looks a shambles without him -incapable of stringing two passes and often leaving the defence with no outlet when they (the defence) have possession so they end up hoofing it. Yes - I agree that his goal scoring record is woeful but with others scoring we can live with that.

He is not on anything like that. He signed a three year contract at the beginning of the season and is paid no more than our top earners and yes I do know the contract amount because he told my son at the time he signed it. We were at a barbecue at my son's house, Brian was there, I asked my son if there was any interest in him from Saints, He said that Brian had just told him that Pardew had spoken to him but he had just signed a good contract at Reading an amount over three years. 15k to 25k is a rediculous figure to quote and shows that the person quoted hasn't a clue quoting those figures.

That really is a ludicrous exaggeration!

Probably keeping our options open with him and Cork, don't want to go all out for Cork then miss him and in the meantime Howard has gone else where.

As posted earlier:

I hope you post this on the Takeover thread... and who is 'Frattonman'? He's come up with some corkers;

Lets not forget that scummers have a nice little debt to pay of 26m and rising.

and

Well the midfields getting sorted so now we need players upfront who can score maybe Shane Long and Jimmy Kebe.

and it appears his mate 'Scumstomper' is equally afflicted

.... and I really don't think Brian Howard would go there, especially if we're in for him. In fact, why don't we just ask Brian himself?

Btw... who are the mongers on the Echo site writing Howard off?

Can't ever see him going to Pompey. He and his family are all Saints fans.

His Uncle is a Glasgow Rangers fan actually... ;-)

always wary of signing player who isn't good enough for a team we want to better

That logic never seemed to bother Stoke City (for example) when they mopped up our "not good enough" players... ;-)

would not make one iota of difference if the money was attractive.

Owen is an Everton fan isn't he, has he ever played for them ?nope Liverpool and Man U yes.

The concept of a player having a fixed ability amongst fans is always a chuckle. So many factors can affect a players performance, and there are many examples of players who have been overlooked by one manager at one club, finding a new lease of life at another club, or vice versa, players who just don't do it at a new club after a big move, despite their supposed talent.

A good example being;

Chris Marsden - When we were in the Prem, he coudlnt get a game for Birmingham in the division below. He came to us and well (Apart from being shockingly **** for the first few matches) the rest is history

Crouch, Dryden, Hiley... all players that fans moaned about before giving them a chance.

Superb post btw, Minty.

there will be lots of examples, and fans will always warm to / prefer players who make it or improve with saints, however if other managers at same level don't want a player I just wonder if he is best we can do, for where we are aiming

Crouch

He's certainly the best example I can think of... He got slated before and after he was signed, but before playing... all most people could think of was his performance at SMS for Villa when he missed 4 clear cut chances. And fair enough, on that evidence, it's right to have concerns, but NEVER write a player off, especially when they come to your club and you want them to do well. Assuming we always do want new players to do well... sometimes you have to wonder!

I don't think it was fair to assume he was rubbish at all... if you write a player off one performance then you are, for all intents and purposes, a moron. So those who did it... you're all morons ;)

Seriously though, I always try to look beyond a couple of missed chances and see the overall picture. What else does he contribute to the team? Is he getting in scoring positions? Movement, passing, first touch... how does he fit in with the formation, tactics, partnerships, players around him.

we signed Crouch for £2m from team much higher status than where we were or realistically aiming for.

not the same as getting player on a free from Reading

Posted

No, if anything, based on some of the reactions at the time, it was much WORSE.

'We're paying £2m for someone who is sh!t!!!' etc, etc.

A free from Reading (if true) would be far less risk.

Simple conclusion: Never write anyone off no matter what pre-conceptions you might have.

I agree mate, hence I said 'on that evidence, it was right to have concerns'... but then it depends on whether people form their opinions on the tiny amount they've seen, or whether they're more open minded. Like us.

wouldn't write Howard off, sounds decent player - just (admittedly not watching him every week) but doesn't jump out as being class above Morgan and Chaplow. Sure he is better than Gobbern is at moment though - Cork sounds more first choice / first 11. Wouldn't be disappointed with either

Kelvin Davis. Although plenty are still convinced he's useless.

Going the other way, I'd say Kevin Davies. A player, who the current manager (who we all had complete faith in) didn't fancy, who then went on to perform for 8+ seasons in the top flight.

One of the dumbest decisions made by Saints.

Yet some are still desperate for us to sign Antonio.....

remember the discussion over Antonio v Ox-C at the start of the season.

Some players prove managers and fans wrong but generally the best players are recognised

To be fair though Antonio has a similar record to AOC in his season here. Don't get me wrong AOC is by far the better player but Antonio did pretty well too.

He scored 7 goals from 22 starts. AOC scored 10 from 25 starts. AOC had 8 assists and Antonio had 5. Which would put AOC at a goal every 2.5 starts and Antonio at goal in every 3 starts.

However i think Pardew was right to throw him into the team when he did. Sometimes players are put in too early but i don't think anyone can say that about Alex. The lad has a very bright future ahead of him and hopefully that will be with us.

In regards to Howard i think it would be a bad signing. We can do much better then that.
