I've got to be honest, but my reaction when I heard of the quibbling of Howard's price (£300k), was that maybe the Liebherr 5 year project has hit the buffers.

Why? NC is a tough negotiator and won't be held to ransom for more than a player is worth. Antonio is a case in point - we wanted to buy him but not at the price that Reading wanted. If Reading are prepared to let Howard go then clearly his value to them cannot be considered that great, nevertheless they are trying to screw as much money as they can for him. NC has his price that he will pay and no more.

Edit - just read Derry's post after this one and it renders my comment irrelevant - nothing new there ;)

Adkins saying that he thought if you rang a manager to discuss a player it was in confidence!

Welcome to the real world Nigel. Be careful. It's a big nasty wasty place out there...

I heard that Reading want Antony Pulis until the end of the season but Nigel wants him to stay on our bus.

We lose our £100 deposit if it goes back to the depot without being swept out. Thats £100 that could be spent on flowers* in reception, people don't always think these things through.

Normally my reaction when someone turns down a loan move to a lower division is "s*d you then, rot in the reserves".

But he has played 22 times apparently and they are pushing hard for the play offs so if it really is because he thinks he will get games and help the promotion cause for Reading, then fair enough

Think we have to be careful here not to blame Howard.

He wants to play for Saints again at some time in is career. He considers he has unfinished business with us as a local lad.

He is only part way through a very good contract with Reading and getting games. They are in a division higher than us and in with a playoff chance.

Saints called Reading to see if he was available if we approached them formerly. They made Howard aware of that interest but Saints did not take it further for whatever reason. Readin start him on Saturday, he has a good game and the Manager confirms he is still part of the promotion chasing squad. Howard ends speculation by stating he will be staying with Reading at present.

It is well known by friends of Howard that he would have loved to have joined us on loan until the end of the season with an option to sign should we gain promotion. However he was not prepared to take a cut in wages. In view of his age that was sensible.

I suspect Saints have contacted a number of clubs. This one has leaked, others may not have done.

Way too sensible a post containing insufficient hysteria. Go back and try harder.

Well we shall see come Thursday, I'm not sure that we're desperately in need of anyone but the manager has hinted otherwise.

I think we are, very lacking in decent cover for central midfield, especially if one of the current two gets injured or suspended.

I will be very disappointed if we dont bring someone into the building before Thursday's deadline.

wonder if this was one of reasons Adkins tried Lallana in more central role for first half

And did that work?? I really doubt it, AL doesn't have the attributes necessary for CM, then again few do.

There are two things in this that haven't been said, I actually think that Reading didn't want him to go but had to tell him of our enquiry because he would want to look at it as it is his home club. Secondly knowing Saints paranoia about secrecy leaked it immediately to the Reading press and also insisted that if they wanted to recall him they could. I think if this was true it was the recall condition that stopped us going any further with it. Brian obviously had a decent game at Barnsley because McDermott talked to him about their run in and his further involvement. In my view he would have made a big improvement to our midfield and teamplay and it is our loss.

I think AL could do quite well in behind the front 2 but I dont think there is room for Oxo if he plays there. Oxo trying to get forward leaves one side open to the oppo's attack and we get exposed. 4 accross the middle means if AL or Oxo go forward there is still a good number in the middle to cover.

Cant see Oxo or AL being dropped to make a formation work without Morgan and the only mid-field replacements we have are attacking players. We have the players to play the flat 4 with Chapplow and Hammond in the middle, AL and oxo on the flanks. N'Guessen and Forte can cover the wide players if needed but we only have Pulis as cover in the middle. Im sure we could cope a couple of games like this and by then Gobern will be back who could do a job if needed.

He was playing just behind the strikers with Hammond sitting in front of the defence (also swapped with Chaplow and Chamberlain throughout). Not a normal central midfield role in a flat midfield. Guly and Lambert can also (and have been) used deeper (although not in a flat four man midfield).

Central midfield is an important specialist position. We are in too tight a situation regarding automatic promotion to gamble in any way shape or form on a stopgap or an inexperienced midfielder.

I agree 100%. I just hope those at the club who make these decisions agree too.

NC hasn't let us down so far and I dont expect him to let us down over this.

Agreed which is why Adkins wants to get another CM in (and Im sure he will).

it really depends who is available at this stage of the season. No point in getting someone in who can't play the role. It's a position where there are many injuries and a lot of cards (look at Scholes,19 league starts,9 yellow, not to mention our own contingent). I really can't think of any player who might be available who could really do a job for us.

Posted

I'm surprised Adkins has publicly stated that we need another central midfielder for the run in as it will, by logical deduction, leave the club open to criticism (on here at least) if we don't get the side up to optimum strength.

Unless, of course, Nigel is covering his buttocks for the worst case scenario at end of the season when he can turn around and say: "well, I did tell everyone in March that we needed another central midfielder"

This...

I'm best mates with his uncle and Brian would come here but with a possibility of Premeirship promotion who here would blame him for staying??

A decent lad from a good family who will play here again one day...

Schnedierlin really is one of the most overated players we have! really cant see what the fuss is about yes he has natural talent but he rarely uses it and he has a very questionable temprement, seriously his scoring record is truely truely awful when you compareit to his ability and yes I know its not his job to score. I know hes a popular player on here but this is my opinion.

Just as well you're not in charge!

You rate him then? why?

He can pass the ball better than anyone else in the team for starters. Always makes himself available to team-mates and can spread the play better than anyone else. He finds our wide players well, who setup most of our chances.

Posted

Reasons why I rate Schneiderlin.

1) He is the best passer of the ball in our team, his ability to spread the ball from a deep lying midfield position is unmatched by any other squad member. Some of the balls he produced to the wings or to Lambert's feet earlier in the season were utterly sublime.

2) His reading of the game, he has an ability to move into space (either with or without the ball) that Hamster and Chaplow simply do not have.

3) His mentality, If we are under the cosh he is the only central midfielder who will happily sit in front of the back 4 and provide a passing option to our back 4 or put his foot on the ball once in posession and buy us time to push upfield and ease the danger.

Chaplow works harder, Hammond... well until Saturday I wasn't sold on him at all, that was easily the best game i've seen of him for us, he lead the line well. Schneiderlin is easily our most cultured central midfielder and I would always favour a central paring of him and Chappy.

Key point - he will also provide the option for every throw in and comes short to get the ball from the defence, reducing the hoof ball.

Of all the reasons to praise Schneiderlin, mentality is certainly not one.

Hammond is our number one midfielder and it's horses for courses choosing one of the others.

Lets face it Hammond is a Journeyman CM Scheiderlein is a young midfielder highly thought of by the French National team

If he was that highly thought of why have we never had any offers?
