Winning three in a row without dropping points in tricky away games (see Walsall) is very difficult.

We just did it once. You're also assuming no-one else around us is going to drop any points in that time.

I've heard that Cortese is considering another deal, as Reading want £300k transfer fee (if we go up). Apparently there is a cheaper deal elsewhere.

able to say who the other option is at this stage??

They have been closing fast. I am also not referring to Peterborough from earlier in the season, I am talking about the Peterborough NOW under Ferguson.

1st Nov – Saints 9th – 21 points from 14 games Peterborough 5th 22 points from 14 games

1st Jan – Saints 2nd - 34 points from 21 games Peterborough 11th 30 points from 20

1st March Saints 5th – 52 points from 31 games Peterborough 4th 53 points from 32

Today Saints 4th – 61 points from 34 games Peterborough 3rd 65 points from 36

Hardly closing fast. You have been listening to too much hype

Are you a fan of Schneiderlin? Besides, since then he's looked good at Prem level for Bolton and Newcastle.

I don't think all that much of any of our midfielders at the moment, it's the nature of the division we're in - everyone's flawed somehow. Hammond is inconsistent and slow, Schneiderlin doesn't play forward passes enough, Chaplow's lost a lot of the energy he had when first arriving and can't last 90 minutes. And they all get booked too often!

Guthrie looked very average for a Bolton side who came 16th in the Prem, got relegated with Newcastle the next season and then came up in a team that was plenty good enough to win the Division without him in it (Nolan was 442 Player of the Season for the Football League alongside him and well above that level) - and he wouldn't have got a kick even then, if Barton had been fit and not suspended.

This season they've mostly dropped him for Tiote and Barton and are 10 places higher this time than when he played 2 years ago. So he's a below-average Prem squad member.

He WOULD improve us, but that's because we're in League One and even a half-decent Championship player would - but he's no kind of wonder player. I'd also be very surprised if he was remotely interested in signing...

ok, since Fergie has been there they have improved their goal difference on ours by 2 goals - but we have gained more points!

It took him a while to turn it around but they have looked mightily impressive in the last few games since he has settled in.

Not a clue. I got my info from a mate of Howard's. To be honest, it doesn't look great (if true) if we're quibbling over 300k for a player who would walk into our side.

who would he replace..?

he does not defend really, so in order not to get ripped apart in the middle, hammond would have to have at least 8/10 performances every game he plays..

That's very much debateable though isn't it? I know a Reading fan who says he's pretty average. Reckons that any team who wants to be doing anything in the Championship next year shouldn't be relying on Howard. No doubt right now he'd be good enough, but after that it comes down to opinions etc etc. If we don't think he's capable of being something long term, get something in the short term instead and focus on long term later.

A point that is missed by the majority.

And even then it would depend on how he gets on with ginger rottweilers biting his ankles for 90 minutes every Saturday and Tuesday from August to May.League 1 is terrible and most players wouldn't want to be in it if they're anywhere near good enough to play higher up.

CORRECT, that is the point that has to be hammered home to a lot of "I remember when Saints were in the Prem" Saints Fans

We ARE in Div 1, Trying to get out of it

We need players who can play at OUR DIV 1 level, and help us get Promotion

It's pitiful people going on about the CCC and Prem

WE ARE STILL IN DIV 1, Englands THIRD Tier

Just listened to Adkins interview on Saints player and when asked about Howard he talked about how often he talks to Managers and players are constantly moving and sometimes a team has to bring someone in before they let someone go etc. Wouldn't suprise me if we are waiting for Reading to sign a replacement for Howard before continuing our interest. Seeing as he is a regular sub who often comes on I am sure they would want another body in their building before letting him go. Just a thought.

B0ll0cks. He won't be on anything like that at Reading.

Glasgow jests I think, he said 40K yesterday.

I really really doubt if we have a single player who is paid in excess of 500K per annum in basic salary.

I'd think that bonuses included the best paid amongst them are on 450K/annum.

In Tabb, Karakan and Leigertwood they have all they need for their remaining 9 or 10 games this season; Tabb has just signed on for another 2 years or so and they're probably looking to offload Howard and hope they can get QPR to sell them Leigertwood for next season.

Three players isn't enough though really. Karacan is also playing RB for them at the moment.

no.

We are still not sure if we want him, whether he wants too much money, whether we are looking at someone better, or someone cheaper, whether he is good enough, and whether our forwards are crap! Business as usual!

Sorry but there is no way Reading are paying anyone 40k a week!

We're in League 1 no-one looks mightily impressive game in game out.Probably because half of the teams have no cash, no fans, no ambition and zero decent players. Yet we have to go out there and face them, get kicked, bear hugged, wrestled to the ground and then probably booked or sent off for retaliating ever so slightly.Leeds proved that when you finally get out of this shîte league you can do better things with much the same squad if they have any sort of ability. We have shown how good we can be on occasions but the opposition drags us down to their level as oftenas not.

Look at the card count for sides like MK Dons, violent play is obviously inherent in their system yet they're 6th in the league.

how many of the last 14 games of both saints and peterborough have you seen - I am worried about them but its easy to forget that they will see us as keeping on winning and performing well, and that we actually gained more points than them over that period.

And while I'm on the subject, when did slightly above average for Saints Danny Bloody Guthrie become the messiah ? Ten games for Saints during which he did a lot of nothing of note except look a bit busy.

********, he came in and our season turned around. We'd never have made the play offs without him IMO. If you could guarentee Howard would offer the same impact to our central midfield now as Guthrie did then, then I'd be on the Howard bandwagon myself.

for me it is not whether we get BH but we strengthen at this time. As we have still not strengthened our team it shouts out that the money has indeed dried uop and NC is either looking to offload the club or the Liebherrs are not sanctioning any other funds. The complacency of the fans on here saying we have a good enough squad and the others are not stronger is amazing to me. i dont care if the others are not adding to their squad i want to turn up to the bar fight with a tank and the best fighters in the world, not me and my mate who used to be handy 5 years ago.

I am going to keep my powder dry until the emergency loan period ends next Thursday at 5pm but don't ridicule OldNicks comment. Look at what is going on, or more to the point the lack of it!

And you can surmise all that because we don't take 1 player who we don't forcibly need on loan for 12 matches?

It would be a waste of money,we have 20+ players on professional contracts including some who are no doubt highly paid for the division we play in. I'm not Cortese's biggest fan but that's rubbish.

Maybe so, but we DO have weaknesses in some positions due to injury's and suspensions, (and impending suspensions), and it is THOSE positions which will prove to be our Achilles heel in the run in

It will be mo point in Cortese moaning at the end of the season

If he really WANTS promotion, then it has to be funded, and if NO funds are available, he should TELL US

it is not about BH it is general terms that we have not used the windows to our advantage. All the nonsense about us be a money bags club has been swept away.

I dont think any of the other so called rich clubs would be relying on Oscar to drive the teams promotion push on if they were in our position.

We are getting in high average gates and so we should be able to take on a couple of players. Pompey with their high wage bill break even at 14k, what is our average 21k? Add to that all the extra merchandising that goes with it.

You may be happy with the wonderful 20man squad but i'am not, i want to guarantee that we will make it ,not rely on the spluttering displays that i have had the displeasure to watch.

BH may not be that guarantee but more so than a 19year old(?) lad who is still green around the ears.

What will failure cost us? IMO it will cost us at least 2k off the gate next season let alone the departure of a few of our best players.

I don't doubt that he believes that the players we have should be able to step up and secure promotion any way. If that shouldn't happen then I guess he has every right to moan,as do we.There are no suspension other than Gobern for the time being.Deano and Chappers still have an error margin and we have no idea where we are with Morgan (some info might be useful there then) Even if Deano should get booked today and again on Tuesday(which he won't) it might not be the end of the world because we have options to cover that if necessary. We might still get a loan player in anyway, just probably won't be Howard.

Large squad??? maybe, but in recent games I've looked at our bench and thought we have looked decidedly weak in terms of quality!!!!!

A bench made up of Forte, N'Guessan, Richardson, Seabourne, Martin, Forecast & Gobern doesn't strike me as having decent replacements up front or in the centre of the park.

With injuries, suspensions (current and pending) and a mental run of games, I would certainly be advocating strengthening in one or two key areas to achieve promotion automatically.

I accept getting players to drop a division or to come and not be guaranteed a game is not easy, but then again I don't get paid thousands to charm them, but I think that's a different argument to suggesting we don't need strengthening.

For a start the money has not dried up.

Secondly the January transfer window was never a good place to attempt to do business, look at the big deals that happened in the Prem, massively overpriced and the reason for this is because of teh fact that teams do not want to destruct their seasons midway through and so the cost for that is a pretty premium. Add this to the fact that at the time we had Guly, Lambert scoring, Barnard still putting in decent performances and the majority of the squad in a very good place.

Morgan, Hammond and Chaplow were all fit, do you really think it would be necerssary to bring in another CM ?? Of course it would have been great for us the fans but would have caused a lot of competition at a time it didn't seem we needed it. We added 2 new wingers, one of whom could do a job upfront (apparantly).

I would stop threating over the fact that we were reportedly in for Brian Howard, I stop bothering to read reports in the papers these days, especially the dirty little rag the echo (can't remember the last time they had any integrity). Sure, he would be a decent signing, but even if we were in for him we don't know the terms of any deal, would you agree to pick up his 20k wages at the dismay of the rest of the squad ? Would you be the first to bemoan the destruction of squad harmony if this happened ?

We have money, I seriously believe that, we will have to wait until the new season to see that though. IMO a lack of any real movement if we get promoted would surely show this to be the case.

yeah, look at most benches...infact, ALL benches in this league and I would feel even worse than ours....we are league 1, we have largely league 1 players...the standard is generally ****e

If we had everyone fit and available the quality on the bench would not be to bad, anyway back to Howard, will he or won't he.
