New CM loanee...ideas?

I've criticised Hammond earlier in the season but I do think on current performances that is a bit harsh. He's weighed in with vital goals like Saturday's and has been more vocal on the pitch. He's not our most talented player but not our worst either.
Rebel is right about his Yoevil display, He was woeful in that game.

he wasn't booked in the JPT game according to the BBC website http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/8951114.stm so I make it 7. Suspension less of an issue then more the worry about an injury leaving us wafer short never mind not having any CM subs.

You're right, he was booked in both League Cup games instead. You only have to go back to his 1 match suspension for 5 yellows and count forward from there, he's on 8 bookings. The OS isn't right, they only had him on 4 when he was suspended.

as you know (look at my previous posts) I never EVER post rumours. BUT.

have heard that Howard does want to join, the clubs are in negotiations with a loan/perm deal (3 years) at end of season if we gain promotion. Figures in the region of £700k.

Hope to have it tied up today / tomorrow to be in team for Saturday.

We would need a new CM in the squad at least.

On the bench maybe but I really don't see us agreeing to pay 700K for a player now (dependant on promotion of course) when we'll have all summer to strengthen our squad for our NPC campaign, if he's not in Reading's first XI he probably isn't good enough for ours either. We'll go for a straight loan with no strings attached for the time being. Looks more like agent action than club action right now.

Derry said it was way way off, that's good enough for me.

He is better than anybody we have in central midfield. He was I believe injured and Reading are on a good run and he hasn't been able to get back in. I might be seeing him on Thursday,

there is no doubt he would come if the terms were right and the club's agree, he feels he has unfinished business at Saints. He is a natural left sided central midfielder who passes forward which is just what we need. However at the moment nothing has happened.

Well it looks like we have Harlee Dean available for selection again. Not to mention Callum McNish. Ben Reeves is impressing too. Personally, as we are talkng about backup to Hammond and Chaplow, I would rather we look within.

There is no way we should be leavfing it to the kids at this crucial time in the season. Quite simply, if we fail to get promotion, we lose Fonte, Lallana, Lambert and Chamberlain and have to start again.

Frimpong from Arsenal would be a fantastic loan, would hope he would choose us over posh and Charlton. Howard would be great, not sure Reading would let him go though

Like Gobern? That worked out well.

Not sure whether you are agreeing or being sracastic. Yes, it did work out. He was definately a player who gave us options and who could come on for a tiring midfielder and make an impact.

No it didn't work out to the extent that one error of judgment was costly and we lose him for three games. The point is, we only need to get through three games because after that he will be back in contention with that much more 'experience' under his belt.

If you are telling me McNish, Dean and Reeves are rubbish I would be more worried about the long term future of the club. If they are good enough, let's use them. The coaching staff probably know a lot more about their abilities and limitations than someone from Arsenal or Chelsea youth squad.

They might also know that the lad from Arsenal is better right now than the three we have.

Would love to see Howard sign, if he can experience a return to form like Chaplow has since his arrival then he would be easily one of the best players in this league. It wasn't al that long ago that he was regarded as probably the best player in the Championship and had prem teams sniffing around him, always believed he has unfinished business here since we booted him out of the youth team and he landed up on trial at Chelsea!

The fact it has been so heavily rummoured on here sadly means it is almost certainly not true. the Arsenal kid looks a good bet as well, Wenger seems to rate him, provided he is a get stuck in to it type.

Adkins update:

Adkins will be without both Morgan Schneiderlin and Oscar Gobern for Saturday's game, but remains focused on the bigger picture of having a team that can challenge during the run-in.

"It's fair to say that we are short of regular midfielders with Oscar having been sent off and Morgan being injured, but we have got players in the squad who can play in midfield and who have played in midfield before, so we can adapt to that.

"We have been actively searching on what is available out there from a midfield point of view, but we won't do anything for the sake of it, whoever comes in has to help the club and the team and fit into what we are trying to achieve. I'm sure there will be plenty of names that will be touted around between now and when the loan window shuts (next week), but until someone signs a piece of paper, that is exactly what it will be, pure speculation.

"I'm sure everyone is well aware of how, in this modern era, players are linked to clubs, maybe it is other people's doing, but it is pure speculation and we will have to live with that.

"We are looking forward to the remaining fixtures, we have goals in the team and we have a good defensive record, but most important is that we have a united team."

Well in 1966 due to injuries a very young Mick Channon played against Bristol City and scored a goal to help us get promotion

In forty years time perhaps you can bore this board with posts telling how some Academy player helped SFC to Promotion in 2011

Could somebody please point out the next Mick Channon in the youth team. Chamberlain is already doing that. It's a central midfield leader we need. Fonte might do it but it wouldn't be him more like one of the spare full backs. It's bad enough at the moment that we aren't playing that well but getting results scoring mostly from set pieces. If that dries up, we won't be promoted, playing stopgaps while our competitors are flying.

Chamberlin will be leaving at some point, possibly in the summer. Agree to let Arsenal to have first refusal and use it to our advantage.

How would it be to Saints advantage? From being able to sell him to the highest bidder in a mad scramble, you restrict it to one club. In any case the club don't need to sell him, he is 17 and "could" be a Premier League player with Saints whilst still a teenager.

I think Hypo was possibly referring to Arsenal letting us have Frimpong, which would be an advantage where we are now.

Not sure if this name has already come up (apologies if so), but I noticed in today's paper that Warnock is mouthing off that QPR loaned Martin Rowlands to Millwall, and they've only picked him once since the loan started; Warnock isn't happy as he was led to believe that Rowlands would get some games. He's due to return to QPR next week. I've always thought he was a really decent all-action midfielder, and in his early 30's, he wouldn't be unnerved by the edginess of a promotion run-in.

I think he could be well worth a punt. Not sure why he hasn't played much for Millwall, I know their midfield is normally paked with athletes and maybe he's a bit too old for them now. Would be fine for us in our predicament though.

Ryan Doble ? Also, Ox-Cham's interviewed in FourFourTwo this month and pointed out that he has always regarded himself as a central midfielder until this season and is always surprised at the Theo comparisons, so given our surplus of wide midfielders (relatively speaking) maybe that's an option...

I've seen Doble play but I thought he lacked pace. I wouldn't want to rely on him. As for Chamberlain he might have ambitions to be a central midfielder but he would be a lightweight seventeen year old trying to fight it out in the centre of midfield. He may be one day but I wouldn't want to lose him out wide this season.

They said that of Beckham, and he spent his whole career wasted on the wing!.
