Tokyo Tsunami

What has impressed me most is the quiet dignity of the people who have lost all that they possessed, and more. The lady on NHK describing how her teenage daughter was swept away from her and is still missing. Where do you begin to repair lives that have been washed out, cities that have been wiped from existence? You always like to think that in such circumstances you would do something different, something special that would save you, but in the face of such sudden and unstoppable force your fate is truly in the lap of the gods.

My thoughts are with you in Tokyo, and with all of your compatriots.

Telegraph Blog

02:32 Peter Foster, one of our correspondents in Japan, reports from Sendai: "We're seeing long fuel queues, but also long queues at the supermarkets in Ichinoseki for rations. We've just stopped and managed to secure some food by getting a shop owner to open his vending machines. Everywhere else we've stopped they're not working because of power shortages."

02:05 Mr Kan say that radiation readings from the reactor is "very high" and everyone within the 12 mile radius of the No 2 plant must evacuate. Everyone within a 12 mile to 18 mile radius should remain indoors, he says.

"We are making every effort so that if there's an explosion, no further leakage of nuclear material would happen.

"I would like to ask the nation that, although this is a situation of great concern, that you act very calmly."

01:58 Naoto Kan, the prime minister, is due to hold a press conference shortly.

01:56 Japan's nuclear safety agency suspects the explosion may have damaged the reactor's suppression chamber, a water-filled tube at the bottom of the container that surrounds the nuclear core, said agency spokesman, Shinji Kinjo. He said that chamber is part of the container wall, so damage to it could allow radiation to escape.

"A leak of nuclear material is feared," he said. He said the agency had no details of possible damage to the chamber.

Things seem to have got much worse overnight on the Nuclear Plant front Several million people in the area with nowhere else to go as the winds change, unease now as to whether the Plant authorities tried to save face rather than ask for help in many articles & blogs

Radiation levels up in Tokyo,

Could cause many other problems, not least with global energy production plans and costs EU reviewing 150 Nuclear Reactors in Europe.

This gets worse and worse

A CYNIC would say that some possible news editors have an anti Nuclear agenda and have pushed the coverage higher. The Yanks are more of a well this is our technology we know it will be alright but it is worrying. They DON'T lead with a "We're all doomed a Meltdown is coming" type tag line (exagerated for effect)

Do you still believe this - after three major explosions in reactor buildings in four days?

And the American coverage I've seen doesn't say anything like what you're suggesting.

I watched Channel 4 news last night . I have to say they they gave an excellent report on the true aspects of what is happening over there. Well done Mr Snow. Sky and the BBC still **** though unbalanced and sensationalising the matters although they are now focussing more on the Nucleur exposure.

Oh and did anybody see that stupid bint of a reporter in reading a report re midsummer murders and the lackof ethnic people in the episodes. Why the hell did she have to trivalise her report saying she had just found a candlestick and a rope on pinkeys green.

Absolute stupidity. The Bill bloke thought it was amusing . lets get some serious news readers on BBC TV instead of these pratts spouting off their own self importance.

Well done to Channel 4 news . I will be watching that in future

Speaking to a client yesterday and she had an un-usual view. She thought it ironic that the sea has taken revenge on japan for the way they treat the whales and dolphins etc.!!! Not sure it is a correct way to look at it though.

Probably not, Nick. I'd have thought this kind of thinking went out, literally, with the ark.

My friends in Tokyo are reporting that things are getting back to normal. Kids playing football, bars full on a Friday night etc. Many of them have been volunteering at centres, packing up food parcels, Blankets and stuff like that.

It's being reported on the Japanese news that one of their major baseball stars, Ichiro has donated 100 million yen to the relief effort (about £1,000,000). Would like to think that out footballers would do the same if such a disaster happened in England but I can't see John Terry doing it somehow.

In the Real Madrid shop they are selling Japan shirts will all of the money going to the cause as well.

There's always one or two with nutty fluffy bunny ideas though isn't there.Sounds like one of the girls Bertie Wooster spent all of his time evading.
