Viking Warrior Posted 11 March, 2011 Share Posted 11 March, 2011 saintinsouthsea The point i am trying to make and not conveying very well is that the reporters on the BBC and Sky were putting their own spin on what was happening as this story was unfolding They were making stupid comments about people not having electricity etc at the same time as aftershocks were occurring. I may have been wrong with my left wing comment and apologise it wasnt meant to be political. But the bbc are pretty left wing and many reporters appear to come across as fluffy social workers in my opinion. Thats the way reprter work apparently. Some I suspect were educated in the college of drop the dead donkey. They seem to have so many supposed experts on hand to comment on this massive earth quake yet do not mention any thing re Hawai and other areas who are also affected by the quake , after shocks in the pacific rim area. So please delete my comments about left wing. It was early whenI made that reference. I stand by the other comments the reporters made though
MongoNeil Posted 11 March, 2011 Share Posted 11 March, 2011 Some of the footage is mental. Seeing the tsunami move towards a busy road and just sweep all the cars and people away, truly horrific. dubai_phil Posted 11 March, 2011 Share Posted 11 March, 2011 Been catching snippets on and off all day, but just watched a complete montage on BBC World Service. Holy Christ it just about reduced me to tears. Watching some guy on what looked like a motorbike trying to outrun it, the people on the roads seemingly driving along oblivious to what was about to hit them. Sky & Reuters reporting huge swathes of places on fire, there was some film of that it just seemed to cover forever. Film of one small town centre with the debris just looking like some weird modernist sculptures. One report saying 10,000 + people missing. Utterly utterly horrific. Armageddon live on Prime Time tv and everyone filming it with their mobiles How the HELL do you start to look for survivors or even clean the mess up. Presumably they are exempt from claiming on insurance because of it being an act of god? As there are billions and billions of pounds of damage here is this going to drastically affect Japan's economy? Or do you think they'll recieve a huge amount of national aid which will help them pull through this?

TBF the Yanks were already loading & Diverting Aircraft Carriers, Command & Control Ships, Floating Harbours and abour 6,000 Marines at ports across Asia yesterday about the same time Cameron said we stand ready to help. Personally I think everyone is helping, just our Politicos seem to make more of the Spin opportunity and the News channels are so full of this story right now they probably aren't even reading press releases from elsewhere. Also The Japanese only asked for help early this morning not sure that we yet know what help to send them. The Nuclear explosion and sudden increase in the safety zones looks like the biggest problem right now.

An official from the United Nations said that although more than 68 rescue teams from more than 45 countries have offered to help, Japan will start with only four teams from Korea, the United States, Australia and New Zealand. Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan reportedly said 8-thousand of Japan's own troops have been dispatched to the affected area and an emergency task force has been activated. thesaint sfc Posted 12 March, 2011 Share Posted 12 March, 2011 1052: Neil McKeown in Nakameguro, Tokyo writes: "The evacuation zone has been extended to 20km by the government. However TepCo [the Tokyo Electric Power Company] appeared in a news conference and promised to release new radioactivity readings after 6pm. It is now 7.30pm and they have not done so. People are getting extremely frustrated at the lack of news coming from TepCo and the government - they have yet to confirm if the building that suffered an explosion housed a reactor, and we have no indication how much radiation has been released or in what direction winds are blowing."
