Sky news/BBC take a negative stance as usual. How the japanese do not have power etc as the Japanese have shut down power stations /nuclear plants etc. Thejapanese government and the people no this is part of the safety strategy to prevent more catastrophe occuring so why do our left wing touchy feeling reporters always spin this to make out the people suffering are even more pitiful The japanes folk are very resilient and prepare for every eventuality. Patrick Bateman Posted 11 March, 2011 Share Posted 11 March, 2011 Okay, this may be a silly question, but I don't know the Geography/Physics involved. The earthquake has caused a tsunami, that I understand and why etc. I was looking at a detailed map of the tsunami's reach and it has the US west cost marked out for 9-10 hours. My question (I can't find an answer online, I am supposed to be working too!) is, does the tsunami's power diminish? My HQ is in Seattle, basically does that mean they'll be battered as well? In the 2004 Indonesian tsunami several people were killed in South Africa, nearly 5,000 miles away, although these were people already in the water - I'm not sure that the waves broke land. Seattle is about the same distance from the epicentre of this quake, however Taiwan have just announced that the first wave has reached them and caused little/no damage. I'm sure there will be plenty of warning for the US West coast if required!

NOTE - DART MEASUREMENTS ARE FROM THE DEEP OCEAN AND THEY ARE GENERALLY MUCH SMALLER THAN WOULD BE COASTAL MEASUREMENTS AT SIMILAR LOCATIONS. EVALUATION SEA LEVEL READINGS CONFIRM THAT A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED WHICH COULD CAUSE WIDESPREAD DAMAGE. AUTHORITIES SHOULD TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION IN RESPONSE TO THIS THREAT. THIS CENTER WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR SEA LEVEL DATA TO DETERMINE THE EXTENT AND SEVERITY OF THE THREAT. A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF WAVES AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND CAN VARY SIGNIFICANTLY ALONG A COAST DUE TO LOCAL EFFECTS. THE TIME FROM ONE TSUNAMI WAVE TO THE NEXT CAN BE FIVE MINUTES TO AN HOUR, AND THE THREAT CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AS MULTIPLE WAVES ARRIVE. FOR ALL AREAS - WHEN NO MAJOR WAVES ARE OBSERVED FOR TWO HOURS AFTER THE ESTIMATED TIME OF ARRIVAL OR DAMAGING WAVES HAVE NOT OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS THEN LOCAL AUTHORITIES CAN ASSUME THE THREAT IS PASSED. DANGER TO BOATS AND COASTAL STRUCTURES CAN CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL HOURS DUE TO RAPID CURRENTS. AS LOCAL CONDITIONS CAN CAUSE A WIDE VARIATION IN TSUNAMI WAVE ACTION THE ALL CLEAR DETERMINATION MUST BE MADE BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES. BULLETINS WILL BE ISSUED HOURLY OR SOONER IF CONDITIONS WARRANT. THE TSUNAMI WARNING WILL REMAIN IN EFFECT UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. THE JAPAN METEOROLOGICAL AGENCY MAY ALSO ISSUE TSUNAMI MESSAGES FOR THIS EVENT TO COUNTRIES IN THE NORTHWEST PACIFIC AND SOUTH CHINA SEA REGION. IN CASE OF CONFLICTING INFORMATION... THE MORE CONSERVATIVE INFORMATION SHOULD BE USED FOR SAFETY. THE WEST COAST/ALASKA TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER WILL ISSUE PRODUCTS FOR ALASKA...BRITISH COLUMBIA...WASHINGTON...OREGON...CALIFORNIA. S-Clarke Posted 11 March, 2011 Share Posted 11 March, 2011 I'm watching BBC news online. Why aren't they mentioning the other earthquake in Hawaii? I think it's seen as a normal occurrence, 4.9 isn't massive at all in an earthquake zone and most countries in that area do get shocks around that magnitude every now and then. What's worrying is the increasing amount of large earthquakes in the pacific area over the last 4 weeks - Papa New Guinea , New Zeland and now Japan. Dont claim to be an expert, im only repeating what I've heard on the news, but earthquakes the size of NZ one occur every other day, the only reason it cause so much damage was because it was a "direct hit" under a city that has no defenses against earthquakes.
