Tokyo Tsunami

watched some of the footage, amazing films big boats/buses being swept away like a twig gives you a true feeling of the power of the wave.

Sky news/BBC take a negative stance as usual. How the japanese do not have power etc as the Japanese have shut down power stations /nuclear plants etc.

Thejapanese government and the people no this is part of the safety strategy to prevent more catastrophe occuring so why do our left wing touchy feeling reporters always spin this to make out the people suffering are even more pitiful

The japanes folk are very resilient and prepare for every eventuality.

Still a tragic event for them to endure

Okay, this may be a silly question, but I don't know the Geography/Physics involved. The earthquake has caused a tsunami, that I understand and why etc.

I was looking at a detailed map of the tsunami's reach and it has the US west cost marked out for 9-10 hours. My question (I can't find an answer online, I am supposed to be working too!) is, does the tsunami's power diminish? My HQ is in Seattle, basically does that mean they'll be battered as well?

I've got CNN on and they would be jumping up and down in frenzied panic/excitement if there was a risk of major devastation on the West coast. They are not....yet.

Warnings have gone out as far away as New Zealand, for people to stay off beaches etc - due to hit there in 6 hours....

How the hell does the Tsunami get to the West Coast of America, when Japan is over on the East by Australia ?

In the 2004 Indonesian tsunami several people were killed in South Africa, nearly 5,000 miles away, although these were people already in the water - I'm not sure that the waves broke land. Seattle is about the same distance from the epicentre of this quake, however Taiwan have just announced that the first wave has reached them and caused little/no damage. I'm sure there will be plenty of warning for the US West coast if required!

VALUES ARE GIVEN IN BOTH METERS(M) AND FEET(FT).

PER - PERIOD OF TIME IN MINUTES(MIN) FROM ONE WAVE TO THE NEXT.

NOTE - DART MEASUREMENTS ARE FROM THE DEEP OCEAN AND THEY

ARE GENERALLY MUCH SMALLER THAN WOULD BE COASTAL

MEASUREMENTS AT SIMILAR LOCATIONS.

EVALUATION

SEA LEVEL READINGS CONFIRM THAT A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED

WHICH COULD CAUSE WIDESPREAD DAMAGE. AUTHORITIES SHOULD TAKE

APPROPRIATE ACTION IN RESPONSE TO THIS THREAT. THIS CENTER WILL

CONTINUE TO MONITOR SEA LEVEL DATA TO DETERMINE THE EXTENT AND

SEVERITY OF THE THREAT.

A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF WAVES AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE

LARGEST. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND CAN VARY

SIGNIFICANTLY ALONG A COAST DUE TO LOCAL EFFECTS. THE TIME FROM

ONE TSUNAMI WAVE TO THE NEXT CAN BE FIVE MINUTES TO AN HOUR, AND

THE THREAT CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AS MULTIPLE WAVES ARRIVE.

FOR ALL AREAS - WHEN NO MAJOR WAVES ARE OBSERVED FOR TWO HOURS

AFTER THE ESTIMATED TIME OF ARRIVAL OR DAMAGING WAVES HAVE NOT

OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS THEN LOCAL AUTHORITIES CAN ASSUME

THE THREAT IS PASSED. DANGER TO BOATS AND COASTAL STRUCTURES CAN

CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL HOURS DUE TO RAPID CURRENTS. AS LOCAL

CONDITIONS CAN CAUSE A WIDE VARIATION IN TSUNAMI WAVE ACTION THE

ALL CLEAR DETERMINATION MUST BE MADE BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES.

BULLETINS WILL BE ISSUED HOURLY OR SOONER IF CONDITIONS WARRANT.

THE TSUNAMI WARNING WILL REMAIN IN EFFECT UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.

THE JAPAN METEOROLOGICAL AGENCY MAY ALSO ISSUE TSUNAMI MESSAGES

FOR THIS EVENT TO COUNTRIES IN THE NORTHWEST PACIFIC AND SOUTH

CHINA SEA REGION. IN CASE OF CONFLICTING INFORMATION... THE

MORE CONSERVATIVE INFORMATION SHOULD BE USED FOR SAFETY.

THE WEST COAST/ALASKA TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER WILL ISSUE PRODUCTS

FOR ALASKA...BRITISH COLUMBIA...WASHINGTON...OREGON...CALIFORNIA.

I'm watching BBC news online. Why aren't they mentioning the other earthquake in Hawaii?

I think it's seen as a normal occurrence, 4.9 isn't massive at all in an earthquake zone and most countries in that area do get shocks around that magnitude every now and then.

What's worrying is the increasing amount of large earthquakes in the pacific area over the last 4 weeks - Papa New Guinea , New Zeland and now Japan.

Dont claim to be an expert, im only repeating what I've heard on the news, but earthquakes the size of NZ one occur every other day, the only reason it cause so much damage was because it was a "direct hit" under a city that has no defenses against earthquakes.

saint in south sea

Im not a loon, but I do have gripe about our reporters pooring more misery on a terrible situation that was unfolding on tv this morning at 7 am our time. I have not seen any further footage since 830. but will look in again at mid day. I just hope that not many lives have been lost . as I said earlier the Japanese are well equipped for dealing with these events.

My thought are with those who have lost their lives and are suffering from the carnage that has occured so far

Sorry but a massive earthquake has hit, one of the strongest in living memory, and you make a point about News Networks being left wing in their reporting - that's a bit loony in my view. I don't understand how are the reporters "pouring on more misery"? I hear that William Hague and David Cameron have both made official statements sending the condolences to the Japanese people and expressing their sympathy for their suffering - the bloody lefties!

1146: The BBC's Greg Ward in New Zealand says authorities have downgraded the tsunami threat. They say there is now a marine threat only. This means strong and unusual currents are possible in the sea, river mouths and estuaries, but no land threat is expected, our correspondent says.

On the BBC:

Auckland-based geologist Chris Buckley tells the BBC World Service the tsunami wave is on its way towards New Zealand at 500 or 600 miles an hour. "It's kind of like looking at an express train heading towards us right now", he says

600mph? ****ing hell.

Working from home today so have sky news on. Some fascinating pictures being released. Weird as well that this the first time the media has had such as advanced warning and been able to get themselves in place ready for when it hits other countries later on today.
