for_heaven's_Saint Posted 10 March, 2011 Share Posted 10 March, 2011 Hi All, I desperately need to get hold of a book for my dissertation but it's not in any of the London Uni libraries, or any of the big book shops and the only place I can find it online, other than a website that only ships to the US, is on amazon, where it is $176! The book is Dickens: The Orphan Condition by Baruch Hochman and Ilja Wachs. The ISPN is: 9780838637753 Does anyone know of any good and cheap online book stores, or even local dealers/shops that may have it available? If so please could you post me a link/contact details etc so that I can stop pulling my hair out? Thanks.

(Shop in the UK) £189.00 - used, good condition. (Shop in the USA) The question must be, what would you consider as cheap? for_heaven's_Saint Posted 10 March, 2011 Author Share Posted 10 March, 2011 Can you not get it from an academic library? I'm just searching the British Library website, but it seems for some reason no-one has a copy. Senate House Library is massive and they don't have it :-/

Thanks for that- £35 is pretty cheap for an academic book, would still like to pay less if possible but may have to go for that one.

for_heaven's_Saint Posted 10 March, 2011 Author Share Posted 10 March, 2011 Try Barnes and Noble Thanks. Had a look but like Waterstones they have the record of the book but none in stock. Perhaps I can request a copy- I'll look into that. Start hunting down Charing Cross Road? Could do- not sure how cheap the shops round there would be though? Never really been in any of them tbh. Secret Site Agent Posted 11 March, 2011 Share Posted 11 March, 2011 Try Baggins Books in Rochester. They are pretty good at hunting down rare second hand books. I have got some real oldies from them, especially a copy of the rare Logans Run paperback from 1967 and Logans world. I must warn it is not cheap, as they will not just look on their shelves, they hunt the book down if it is available as they have contacts all over the UK and abroad, so they may be able to beat the £35.00 or may be more expensive. I have been waiting to pass this info on to someone for a long time. Good Luck.
OttawaSaint Posted 11 March, 2011 Share Posted 11 March, 2011 Can you do an inter-library loan? (i.e. Uni library can order it from another library in the country who will send it to them).
Deppo Posted 11 March, 2011 Share Posted 11 March, 2011 Can't you just pretend you read it and make up a few quotes and put it in the bibliography? It's not as if anyone will be able to check as the book seems to be as rare as can be.

Alastair Campbell would be proud.

Bath Saint Posted 11 March, 2011 Share Posted 11 March, 2011 FFS, students of today. I see your location is London. Get over to St Pancras, go to the British Library, get a card, order your book, sit in the reading room and read it. Talk about spoon-feeding.... Here's the record, fyi. http://catalogue.bl.uk/F/?func=full-set-set&set_number=045540&set_entry=000001&format=
Bath Saint Posted 11 March, 2011 Share Posted 11 March, 2011 Oh, and all this costs nothing apart from the tube fare to get to the library. If you walk, it costs absolutely nothing.
for_heaven's_Saint Posted 11 March, 2011 Author Share Posted 11 March, 2011 Yeah thanks Bath Saint. I did see that they had it in there earlier on and I may well do that, though it would be helpful to have a copy I could take out and bring home with me. Bath Saint Posted 11 March, 2011 Share Posted 11 March, 2011 I guess, if you have checked out Sanate House Library, that you're at one of the London colleges. Well, having done a 2 second search of Copac, I've found that the item, although rare, can be found at Aberdeen, Birmingham, British Library, Cambridge and UCL. Are you at UCL or does you college have reciprocal arrangements with them? If nothing else, you should be able to get it on ILL within a few days. Again, this should costs nothing and you get to read the book over a longer period.

I'm not at UCL but I believe my student card allows me entrance into their library- possibly even to take out books. Thanks again.
