OldNick Posted 10 March, 2011 Author Share Posted 10 March, 2011 Improve team? Yes Could we get? Don't be daft. CMS is worth 2 mil to Posh right now. He will still be worth 2mil at the end of the season. BUT if Posh get promoted he would have helped earn them at least an extra 2mil in revenues for next year. You want us to pay 4 mil for him? Which is what they would value him at even IF they settled for 3mil to eliminate the risk of a playoff knock out. Is he really worth that? How does that compare with other players with NPC or higher abilities that may be available in the summer? Hell of a risk, even IF they decide to sell him to us and shut themselves out of a chance of auto promotion, I sure as hell wouldn't sell (loan) in that situation if I was at Posh In Jan there was talk of him being in the region of £1m, the publicity re Ox's transfer fee pushed Posh's expectations and we wouldnt play it would seem. Iam amazed that so many are happy with the squad we have and feel confident that we will still do it. I do hope you all are right, i would nt want to be proved right again aka a certain club down the road.
Son of Bob Posted 10 March, 2011 Share Posted 10 March, 2011 How ironic that you are judging the footballing knowledge of others in the very same post where you try to justify your weak position with an example that depends on drasitc changes in line-up If I could be bothered I'd think up a witty and mildly abusive riposte but everyone knows you're a (o(k already so I fear the efforts would be lost on most. Now jog on and let the adults talk.

I do hope you all are right, i would nt want to be proved right again aka a certain club down the road. I think everyone would be happy if we replaced our entire squad with the Barca 1st team but realistically our current squad should be good enough to do the business in league 1, and trying to lure NPC and above level players to compete for a place on our bench is going to be very difficult so I think its reasonable for so many to be happyish with what we have right now. If we brought in CMS most would no doubt be happy and he would at least be competing for a 1st team spot and adding good value to the team. Who in the CM would we be looking at that would do the same? A month loan to cover the injury's and possible suspensions would be nice but Im not sure who it would be nice to go for? Anyone in the championship? Im thinking more Prem class player but there are not many that will drop down to championship let alone league 1 so its back to looking at what we have available. When Pardew 1st came in we were a team that wanted to go up and hardly had any competition for places so anyone wanting to drop down would be looking at an automatic 1st team spot. Not so many of those places left so its much harder to find someone better than what we have and willing to make the step down to help us step back up. Super_Uwe Posted 10 March, 2011 Share Posted 10 March, 2011 IMO we have plenty of depth to get us over the line, but if a decent young Prem/Champ player became available on loan that could challenge the 1st XI so to speak, we may as well go for it. I do agree with your sentiments, but I am cursed by being a realist and hold the opinion that while we kept AOC it did harm the club in the way I said before - everyone we tried to buy became a rip off. So we didn't get him then. We need a CM cover IMHO as I worry that Gobern would be up to the task IF we lost Hammon/Chaplow for any long period. We could argue that AL could switch into the centre or Fonte but.. So the WISH to have a Phil Neville or a Lee carsley in on loan is there, just I really don't see that it would happen or that they are actually available. I'd heard from my mate the taxi driver that we could have the pick of loans with us being on the up and all that - we got N'Guessan & Forte.... Maybe with a run of games they could be the pieces of the jigsaw. Maybe that 3some the GF promised to set up for me with Amy Pond & Megan Fox is still on, but somehow...... I don't think we are in with any chance of getting him now. Just using him as an example. If the club could get him in the fans would be happy and he would improve the squad. The players that are actually available however might not be of the standard that demand a 1st team spot which leaves us with what we have right now or bringing in squad members to compete for a place on our bench. qwertySFC Posted 10 March, 2011 Share Posted 10 March, 2011 Yes - just what the team needs right now - another player - maybe another 11, can't help fill this team has underachieved so far , with our squad in relation to Brighton and B'mouth. The push for a new player was January - but for some reason with all of the names banded about it just didn't happen - the roll of the dice play off's looms
derry Posted 10 March, 2011 Share Posted 10 March, 2011 One player that would improve us immeasureably in central midfield and give us a playmaker in chief, a captain and organiser and already the scorer of 14 league goals from midfield. 33 years of age but would make a big difference and probably would be available, Gary Jones. Lets B Avenue Posted 10 March, 2011 Share Posted 10 March, 2011 Mackail-Smith? About only real world signing worth going for. Maybe not obtainable Improve team? Yes Could we get? Don't be daft. I watched the BBC East version of Late Kick Off on I Player. Barry Fry was a studio guest and when asked about CMS, said that they had turned down a £2m bid in January as they had no intention of selling him. Anyone got any serious suggestions for a loanee? Dalek2003 Posted 10 March, 2011 Share Posted 10 March, 2011 Connolly would be a useful addition to the bench, but i believe he is still in the treatment room.
Mowgli Posted 10 March, 2011 Share Posted 10 March, 2011 Absolutely no need for loans. Guly gets injured - Barney comes in and proves himself as a quality striker. Schneiderlin gets injured - in comes Gobern and proves to be a real star. We would never have got players as good as that on loan. And we have not yet started talking about McNish and the others. If you want to add quality to the existing squad, call a couple of the loanees back from Stockport or Bishops Stortford. But as it stands we have some pretty good bench players like Richardson, Dickson, Martin and Seabourne.
captainchris Posted 10 March, 2011 Share Posted 10 March, 2011 Yeah, but your big problem here is you're not going to get quality players coming to Southampton to warm the bench in case someone gets injured. If we want to sign the kind of quality/high profile player that's going to make an impact they're going to want to come straight into the first team and frankly, who do you drop at the moment? We're currently getting results and surely that's what this game is all about? What is this obsession with 'high profile'..........Who do Bournemouth have who is high profile - come to that MK Dons and Huddersfield and Exeter who punching above their weight. Quality yes - high profile not necessarily.........
Son of Bob Posted 11 March, 2011 Share Posted 11 March, 2011 (edited) What is this obsession with 'high profile'..........Who do Bournemouth have who is high profile - come to that MK Dons and Huddersfield and Exeter who punching above their weight. Quality yes - high profile not necessarily......... I agree. I wasn't saying we should be looking specifically at this kind of player. I was making the point that in order to get players in of the standard people are suggesting on here then they would be expecting a place in the starting line up. You're simply not going to get a top L1/Championship standard player coming in with the prospect of being 'back-up' in case someone's injured. Anyway, as I've said previously, if we don't get out of this league with our current team then this will not be as a result of a lack of depth or quality in the squad. I don't have the time to do it now as I'm at work but I'm pretty sure a starting line up with our 2nd choice players in each position would be good enough to get us a top 6 finish.
