hamster Posted 9 March, 2011 Share Posted 9 March, 2011 I think I may be correct in saying that today's religious festival has been hijacked by the pro-health lobby and smokers across the country are encouraged to make the decision to quit I have personally 'quit' many times and many times have failed. No shame in that and coincidentally the good book has something to say about the road to hell being littered with good intention (iirc). Anyway, my advice to anyone having a go at giving up is to do it tomorrow, do it quietly and expect it to be painful. Don't expect a sudden surge in rude health and you most definitely will not feel richer financially all that will happen is that you will increase your chances of seeing Saints win the Champions League. Good luck NB Ever the hypocrite I gave up again yesterday.
dune Posted 9 March, 2011 Share Posted 9 March, 2011 I smoke roll ups now which don't make me cough as they don't contain the chemicals that ready rolled do. Notice how roll ups go out wheras ready rolled never do - it's because they contain a chemical to keep them burning and it's this chemical that is the most damaging part of smoking. A doctor told me this. Since smoking rollys i don'tgob up plegm every morning. That said i'm climbing Snowdon this week so will be needing something with a kick so have bought 40 JPS (my favourite smoke).
hamster Posted 9 March, 2011 Author Share Posted 9 March, 2011 Good man. I put it to you that the biggest mountain you will ever climb would be to leave those JPS on the shop shelf? Stfu hamster, you sound just like that really annoying **** who almost drives you to violence every time you spark up with his words of wisdom and disdain. Ignore me dune, don't take any unnecessary risks up there (ie make sure you carry spare lighter and store your cancer sticks in a waterproof bag)

I know if I couldn't have a smoke the mountain would conquer me and i'd turn back.

Viking Warrior Posted 9 March, 2011 Share Posted 9 March, 2011 Now the government has announced thatTobacco products will have to be kept under the counter in larger stores from April 2012 and in all shops by April 2015. This was a lobour government policy by the way. I suspect that alcohol will be removed from shop shelves in the next few years in a locked concealed room . you will only be able to buy it through a we hatch much like the metadone users in chemists. hypochondriac Posted 9 March, 2011 Share Posted 9 March, 2011 Soon we'll all have to drive plain white cars with pictures of crash victims on the bonnet. Would have thought a leftie like yourself would welcome this initiative. For the record I have never smoked in my life but anyone is free to smoke as long as they don't do it somewhere I am likely to breathe it in. Having said that, anything which encourages people to quit, get healthier and stop putting a strain on the NHS can only be a good thing.

It's legal to smoke and I think it's perfectly OK for people to have the freedom to indulge in a legal pasttime. But I do think smokers should be encouraged to stop and I've cut my consumption by two thirds in the past few weeks. However, there are far more problematic pasttimes that are legal, such as alcohol and motoring that, I think, cause more damage to the individual and the collective. bridge too far Posted 9 March, 2011 Share Posted 9 March, 2011 Jesus Christ, you must be even more hideously cranky and opinionated to live with now! Cranky? I'm never cranky! Opinionated? Well if that means sticking up for your principles, guilty m'lud. Actually I feel a lot better for cutting the number of cigs I smoke - I really do! Whether I'll make the big, final push remains to be seen though. Hard to break a habit of 50 years

I would have thought that on principal you would have not smoked knowing the strain it can put on the NHS and the harm you can do to those around you through second hand smoke. I was wrong. I was wrong. You often are. I don't smoke indoors at my house or anyone elses'. I don't smoke anywhere near my grandchildren or in any place that's likely to cause problems for people. I have never had a day's illness in my life attributable to smoking but I contribute far more than you do to the NHS. But then again, I don't drink to excess so I'm not likely to hurt anyone or damage my liver so I guess I'll cost the NHS a lot less than people who do drink to excess. OK? bridge too far Posted 9 March, 2011 Share Posted 9 March, 2011 BTF, you have the patience of a saint (despite your bad habit.) I'm not so sure about that But it is kind of bizarre and a little bit disturbing that, even when I make a light-hearted comment, the guy leaps on it and accuses me of denying my principles! It's almost like he watches all my comments, waiting for a slip-up. I suppose he has nothing better to do.

Yeah, I know... Quite a few of my smoker mates started the same way, but we all have our vices. Smoking has just become more of a taboo in the last 50 years due to the health issues related to it. I actually think they've really missed an opportunity to cash in. No-one taking the plunge today then? Dune, how about a symbolic throwing your fags off a mountain moment?
