Golden Balls Posted 8 March, 2011 Posted 8 March, 2011 Kingsland seemed impossible to please today. We were passing it round then the ball ended up back with Davis and the Kinglands moaned and groaned like no tomorrow, despite being 1-0 up and in control. The Northam gets so much stick but at least they support.
Leslie Charteris Posted 8 March, 2011 Posted 8 March, 2011 We win 3-0 and it's not good enough! 10 points added to my prediction league total will do nicely - shame 30 others predicted the same result! If we win on Saturday, surely the pessimists could force a smile!
mitch01 Posted 8 March, 2011 Posted 8 March, 2011 Pilkington injury sounds like a shocker, all the best to him.
mcjwills Posted 8 March, 2011 Posted 8 March, 2011 We win 3-0 and it's not good enough! 10 points added to my prediction league total will do nicely - shame 30 others predicted the same result! If we win on Saturday, surely the pessimists could force a smile! 10 points for me as well Game - dire first half, far better second half Keep winning regardless how bad we play and we go up simples
rallyboy Posted 8 March, 2011 Posted 8 March, 2011 awful first half - but had you offered me in advance a 3-0 win, a 5 goal improvement on Bournemouth who lose, and the wheels coming off the pompey caravan all on the same night, I might just have taken that. These games against poor teams have to be won, no prizes for being pretty, just pocket the points and move on.
S-Clarke Posted 8 March, 2011 Posted 8 March, 2011 Pilkington injury sounds like a shocker, all the best to him. Echo that. Reading some of the Huddersfield forums and they're saying that some of their players walked away in tears. He's a very very good player and it would be a shame to see his talent wasted on a freak injury.
Saint Charlie Posted 8 March, 2011 Posted 8 March, 2011 You can only beat who you play and we are good at doing that at the moment.
Lazlo78 Posted 8 March, 2011 Posted 8 March, 2011 Great start to the game but we (and they?) seemed to lose all momentum towards the half time. We do seem to have an extra gear for our second half, and after the break we tore them apart - so all in all a job well done! The top of the table looks very, very interesting once the games in hand are converted into points...
Legod Third Coming Posted 8 March, 2011 Posted 8 March, 2011 Kind of hard to knock a 3-0 win surely? I think so Charlie. We played beautiful football under Jan the Man, but were hammered. Give me a result in a results based business every week thanks!
trousers Posted 8 March, 2011 Posted 8 March, 2011 We're not very good at raising our game against the weakest sides but tend to raise our game against the stronger teams. IMHO. Ergo, I feel confident our performance on Saturday will far outstrip tonight's.
maysie Posted 8 March, 2011 Posted 8 March, 2011 We won, which was good. Pretty bl00dy awful in the first half. Good move for our first goal. Yeovil worked hard but were very very limited (one of the worst technically I've seen in this league). Second half Lallana and Chamberlain got mot more of the ball and it paid dividends, looked much better and played with more urgency. Here are my ratings: David - 6 - not much to do one comfortable save and one dodgy cross. Butterfield - 7- Very steady and really good free kick for the first goal. Fonte - 7- Looked at ease throughout. Martin - 6 - Good in the air but distribution not fantastic. Shows inexperience sometimes, but we have to expect that. Would expect Jaidi back for B'mouth. Harding - 7 - A few sliced clearances but linked up more and more with Lallana as the game progressed, with impressive results. Chamberlain - 7 - Improved as the game went on, pace always worries opponents. Chaplow - 5 - I'm worried with the drop in performance since he has signed permanent. Hammand - 6- Better in seconf half but nothing fantastic Lallana - 9 - Our best player by a mile. One of them players when you want him to turn the player again, even if ot doesn't come of. If he gets injured again I'll be booking my hotel for Manchester. Barnard - 8 - Two well taken goals, good energy and unclucky to get his hatrick - good save by their keeper. Lambert -6 - Unfortunateky didn't seem at the races today, and looked better when he strted to drop deeper in the second half. Gobern - 6- Looks really solid defensively as a midfielder and looks like he culd be good in an attacking sense. Haven';t made my mind up on him yet. Forte - 6- Should have scored. Richardson - Steady - little impact We're not playing amazingly but still picking up results. The wingers are the key.
Saints foreva Posted 8 March, 2011 Posted 8 March, 2011 Disappointing performance but three points is three points. We will most probably need a better performance if we are to beat Bournemouth though.
Legod Third Coming Posted 8 March, 2011 Posted 8 March, 2011 Disappointing performance but three points is three points. We will most probably need a better performance if we are to beat Bournemouth though. You'll most likely get one. As Trousers says, we do raise our game against better sides. If it costs us, then we should worry, but good teams often play badly against bad teams. GREAT teams brush them all aside with equal disdain.

The Cat Posted 8 March, 2011 Posted 8 March, 2011 These games against poor teams have to be won, no prizes for being pretty, just pocket the points and move on. Exactly. And no point busting a gut for a fourth when we were so comfortable. Play the game out without risking any injuries or bookings and move on to the next match.

doddisalegend Posted 8 March, 2011 Posted 8 March, 2011 Beat Bouremouth on Saturday and we will be above them on goal difference. Let me please point out post 114 on the link below!! http://www.saintsweb.co.uk/showthread.php?28670-Colchester-0-2-Saints-Post-Match-Reaction/page3 What if we lose?
Mustapha Fag Posted 8 March, 2011 Posted 8 March, 2011 Kingsland seemed impossible to please today. We were passing it round then the ball ended up back with Davis and the Kinglands moaned and groaned like no tomorrow, despite being 1-0 up and in control. The Northam gets so much stick but at least they support. wasnt just the kingsland, was bad in block 4 as well, the more the fans moan the more pressure on the players, the more mistakes they made the more the fans moaned etc etc etc, end of the day keep the ball they cant score, we win, win every game we go up, happy days
doddisalegend Posted 8 March, 2011 Posted 8 March, 2011 Mentioned this on the match thread but I think Pilkington (Hudders' best player) has broken his leg tonight. Lets hope so. Class real class........
Barry the Badger Posted 8 March, 2011 Posted 8 March, 2011 Well if you see the pre match thread. Thanks to Alpine stating unequivocally that "It wont be 3 or 4 bloody nil." I bet on 3-0 and 4-0. Just got home £60 quid better off. Thank you Alpine. Now, what score will the next game definitely NOT be?
croydonsaint Posted 8 March, 2011 Posted 8 March, 2011 I am just back and I am sorry to deflate anyone who hasn’t been and thinks a 3-0 win is satisfactory but that first half we were absolutely dire – the worst I have seen for ages. We looked absolutely clueless and my confidence in Adkins is draining. 2nd half obviously a bit better because we put the ball in the net twice and gained an element of control but that was only because Yeovil were awful. We were far better at Walsall last week – believe me. I am going to Bournemouth but we are going to perform a lot better to get anything. f.f.s we won, scored 3 goals and a kept a clean sheet. Unreal.
Barry the Badger Posted 8 March, 2011 Posted 8 March, 2011 (edited) f.f.s we won, scored 3 goals and a kept a clean sheet. Unreal. I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that having never watched a Saints team with such high expectations, many fans have no idea what we should be expecting or how to deal with it. jam Posted 8 March, 2011 Posted 8 March, 2011 I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that having never watched a Saints team with such high expectations, many fans have no idea what we should be expecting or how to deal with it. Were you at the game tonight?
doddisalegend Posted 8 March, 2011 Posted 8 March, 2011 Poor first half and a good second half typical saints display really. Luckily Yeovil came to play and not park the bus which always helps us out. Onto the big one (I really never thought playing bompey would be a big match). We have our tails up they're going to be desperate to make up for tonights loss 10 goal thriller here we come. Bit worried by Nigels after match interview on solent though, he really should know which of our players scored...............
SFC Forever Posted 8 March, 2011 Posted 8 March, 2011 We should know by now that we seem to struggle quite often when playing a team that we feel is easy cannon fodder. Watch Lallana win the game for us at Dean Court.
influx Posted 8 March, 2011 Posted 8 March, 2011 We're not F*CKING brazil, we are Southampton and we are in League 1, we won 3-0 tonight and didnt play with style and verve, so f*cking what. Who gives a toss. As long as we keep winning its all good. Some of you arent happy unless your moaning! COYR Oh and I bet the players love that. Im sure some of our fans dont deserve for us to be promoted, ******* loons!!
Barry the Badger Posted 8 March, 2011 Posted 8 March, 2011 Were you at the game tonight? Yep. We won 3-0.
SaintBobby Posted 8 March, 2011 Posted 8 March, 2011 Great win, looking forward to Saturday, but intensely frustrated that despite our best efforts, Peterborough and Huddersfield are keepng pace with us. Sorry, the other thread got locked. Thanks for the personal abuse, alpine. Very immature, really. But I understand. You can't stop lashing out behind a keyboard. I think you'll overcome that, in time. I assume you now put our promotion odds at much greater than 50%? Nearer 70%, I'd think?
Jesus Reigned Posted 8 March, 2011 Posted 8 March, 2011 Did anyone else hear the reference to "Alpine Saint" on Solent during the first half? Something about having received a message that they couldn't read out? Saints were winning at the time so it would make sense if it was a negative comment.
jam Posted 8 March, 2011 Posted 8 March, 2011 Er, yeah, I was there. I was actually going to back up your comment about expectations, with regard to a lot of the crowd getting on the team's back when we were one-nil up but hey-ho.
Barry the Badger Posted 8 March, 2011 Posted 8 March, 2011 Er, yeah, I was there. I was actually going to back up your comment about expectations, with regard to a lot of the crowd getting on the team's back when we were one-nil up but hey-ho. Fair enough then, sorry. I thought you were suggesting that I wasn't at the game, and therefore wouldn't have realised how "sh*t" we were (as the guy behind me decided it was his duty to keep shouting out). I just think it's an odd position we are in where we can be winning comfortably and the fans are getting on the players backs for keeping the ball and passing back to the keeper when there's no forward options on.

Leslie Charteris Posted 8 March, 2011 Posted 8 March, 2011 how did you predict that you arrogant fool? It's easy - just walk up a mountain, contemplate your navel and yodel!
Redbul Posted 8 March, 2011 Posted 8 March, 2011 Fugly match but we win 3-0! So not very entertaining and both teams looked ragged but we had enough class to win and by a big margin! Yeovil were quick to a lot of the ball which meant we couldn't hang on to it and make for a scrappy game. Roll on Saturday though, we'll raise our game for Bompey.
bender Posted 8 March, 2011 Posted 8 March, 2011 I am confident about Saturday, Bournemouth have a sh*te record against us. Question is, when are we gonna catch up with Huddersfield and Peterborough. The spectre of the Ferguson family really bothers me. The bizarre thing is both Hudders and Posh play next Tuesday and we dont depite our games in hand. The follwing Tuesday we do and they dont and then during April we get our extra games.

The follwing Tuesday we do and they dont and then during April we get our extra games. Both of those games are potential banana skins away to Brentford and Sheffield Wednesday respectively. That said, both Posh and Huddersfield have what look like home bankers this weekend. Swings and roundabouts I guess
saints-cris Posted 8 March, 2011 Posted 8 March, 2011 Just got back in, will do ratings etc tommorow.. First half we were really ****e, I was almost bored. But we were 1-0 up so ouldnt complain. Always knew that 1 more goal would kill it off and we did that and another was no surprise. Positive - We scored 3 without getting out of 2nd gear, got an early goal, another clean sheet, gained 5 goal difference on Bompey. Gunna have to play better than that if we wanna beat Bournemouth on Saturday though.
Saint Fan CaM Posted 8 March, 2011 Posted 8 March, 2011 Poor performance - good result. Forte cost me a considerable amount of money by not scoring at the end when one on one and making it 4-0, so he's my hate figure now. (;
Kingsland Red Posted 9 March, 2011 Posted 9 March, 2011 Comfortable 3-0 win against a poor team who offered little threat. My only criticism is that we dont play with a swagger, but look tentative, none more so than Davis who likes to explore every option at least twice before getting the ball out. A bit early to get nervy with 13 games still to play.
Turkish Posted 9 March, 2011 Posted 9 March, 2011 strange really to have come away from the last few home games and seen a 4-1 and 3-0 win and feel that we've not played well. I think that sums up how much better we were than the teams we'v played. For most of tonight we weren't good against a poor team, but we won and won well, there is no doubt this team can beat anyone in this league on their day we are winning well at home and not playing well, it sounds stange saying that but that is the truth. Avoiding defeat saturday is crucial, it is vitally important that we dont lose satuday. The pressure is on Bournemouth, they have built this up, they are treating it like a cup final, for us its a visit to a small club that is a promotion rival, over to you Bournemouth, lets see what you've got.

Neither as the technical ability to keep the ball and spread the play. Need him back asap and also think we should sign someone on loan a bit like morgan. I also feel we need to sign a big guy like lambert upfront.a because we can give ricky a rest b. Cos lambert need to be kept on his toes as he is beoming lazy.

They are growing on trees for league one clubs aren't they! Funny that a few weeks ago people were saying that Hammond and Chaplow were our best pair, MS is over rated lightweight etc, now he is injured he is the messiah and we really miss him, mental!

I wasnt, it was obvious at posh we couldnt keep the ball for toffees with those 2 in midfield. Morgan bossed man utds midfield.
SNSUN Posted 9 March, 2011 Posted 9 March, 2011 Good professional win tonight. Lallana, Barnard and Martin were the best players on the pitch, honourable mention to Oxo, Harding and Hammond. Davis's distribution was suspect, but happy nonetheless. Bring on Bompey!

John McGrath's Jockstrap Posted 9 March, 2011 Posted 9 March, 2011 A mixed bag tonight. Only a few glimpes of Forte but to be honest he looked, well, clumsy....he did lack conviction running at the keeper, almost looked like he knew he was bricking it. Slightly worrying as a genuine Adkins signing??. CM still our weakest part of team. Hammond started well, went missing, but came back in to it once game was won. I do worry that he disappears when it gets tough. Chaplow OK but although yellow wasn't deserved, he does have a tendency to leave his foot in/up on 50/50 balls, and he picks up a lot of yellows. Barney worked his socks off tonight and deserved MOM IMO. Llalana good at times but disappeared for parts of the game. Running Barney close was for me Butterfield - thougt he had (another) great game tonight.....for me best signing this season on a free.
scotty Posted 9 March, 2011 Posted 9 March, 2011 I was a bit concerned about that nasty tackle on AL near the end of the first half, he pulled up and didnt look at all comfortable for a while. Was quite surprised he came out for the second half. Also not happy whenever Fonte and KD have to interact, that always looks like an accident waiting to happen. Pluses, 3 points (of course) and bournemouth losing, and we looked good second half. Agree with the comment above about Gobern, I was impressed with him. Yeovil came to play a proper game and pressed us well first half, at least they didnt do a brighton at St Marys and play a spoiling game.
