bridge too far Posted 8 March, 2011 Share Posted 8 March, 2011 I've recently noticed that when I open this forum, before I sign in, the ads are from companies that I've recently contacted (in my case English Country Cottages). The same thing happens on my Yahoo Mail page. Does this sort of thing happen to anyone else - if so, could it be that these cookies are already being used by some websites? Saint in Paradise Posted 8 March, 2011 Share Posted 8 March, 2011 BTF can't you look at the list of cookies your computer has stored and just delete the ones you think might be causing this problem ?

It's not a problem - I'm going to get one advert or another at some time. I just wondered if this is a recent common event. Strangely, I cleared my cookies only last week! Yes, this is widespread amongst many websites now and these cookies (in one guise or other) have been used by everyone for ages. It will be interesting to see what happens. Some companies might take the view that by setting their browser settings to accept cookies, a user has given the "explicit consent" that the rules require. As with any sort of regulatory intervention where there is uncertainty there will be a period of teething whilst the industry waits for guidance and ultimately I expect a compromise that doesn't cause major ructions for either industry or user will be arrived at.
