What have we come to - beating the 10 men of the mighty Colchester is a 'great win'!

And on a day when those other collosseseses of the football league Brighton , Bournemouth, Hartlepool and Peterborough have all outscored us, against 11 men.

If only we had the vast resources and crowds that those teams have. We can but dream.

Ceteris paribus.

Colcester have only lost at home in the league twice this season. It's a very good result.

It's that kind of attitude (i.e. "we will walk this league") that leads to a) other teams thinking we're ****ers and b) leads to complacency in the team.

There's no such thing as an easy win in League 1, today's result was a good one AWAY from home

It's just my opinion. I really don't think we will catch Brighton unless they have a dramatic loss of form and we up our consistency.

Sorry i thought you meant 2nd. Very doubtful we're catch Brighton - can't see them dropping much more than 9 points (that's inclusing us beating them!)

Apologies for disappearing, but DIY beckoned...

Great result very pleased. Team lifted themselves for a bogey/banana-skin fixture very well. Very optmisitic now, but still we need to do something about these mid-week away fixtures. We need to make the most of the games-in-hand. I think we can do it, but it will be tight, and there may be yet more ups and downs ahead.

Also frustrated to see that Bournemouth won again (our match down there looks bigger with every round of games), and worried about Peterborough, and wondering why we cannot fight like Huddersfield and Brighton (what a match that sounded)

with the other around us all winning (AGAIN), this result is massive. One for the Stattos out there - just being lazy here, but how many of the top 6 do we still have to play because beating them is the ONLY way I can see making ground on them!

Bournemouth,Brighton and MK Dons although I don't doubt their place will be taken by Leyton Orient which would be quite bad news for us because that would take us away to 3 top 6 sides.

We've got Bompey away, MK Dons at home and Brighton away.

Just Brighton and Bournemouth, I think.

Brighton are over the finish line, imo. Our Bournemouth game is HUGE.

When I can be arsed - I'll do the complete run-in fixtures for all the teams chasing promotion - like I do every season.

A very big win on many accounts: getting back in to the winning habit, keeping in the race with most of the others winning, clean sheet, bit of a bogey team etc etc etc.

A couple of decent results on Tuesday (us winning against Yeovil) and Bournemuff losing at Exeter and we could conceivably be looking to overhaul them on Saturday!!!!

Now is the time to step up the pressure on those above us, although I think Brighton are long gone, and start to dominate matches. Would like to see a bit of loan action as that bench was not inspiring though!!!!

To be honest we played far better at Walsall and lost. The second goal came from a corner that never was, but we could have added a couple more late on especially with Barnie's last touch. However, I'd have taken 2-0 before we started.

Someone please tell me that Peterborough still need to play both Brighton and Bournemouth....

EDIT : they still need to play Bournemouth and Huddersfield. Better than nowt, I suppose.

Brighton no Bournemouth yes, plus Huddersfield and Orient. Too many people are neglecting Orient, oh they won't win the league but they don't lose very often and are only on 31 matches. Can't remember the last time that the Os lost in the League.

Don't be daft.

If we'd lost this thread would have been dominated by alpine and chums crowing.

And you would've been right chuffed if we had lost i suppose.

There is a difference between crowing and being ****ed of your football team lost.

Pot,kettle......the'question' thread you just started, were you not crowing...or was that just baiting then.

I am delighted withthis win. Cochester had only lost two at home this season so this counts as a good, solid win when still not at our best.

I would be ecstatic if other teams around us had dropped points but they all just keep plugging away and our occasional "off days" let us down badly.

The table is shaping up for Brighton to keep running away and 5 others to be chasing 2nd place. I think teams currently below 6th are beginning to slowly drop away. Next weeks game and other games against our closest rivals are looking to be crucial now. I do think we are in a good position but the team needs to really believe in itself and stop dropping silly points.

I think we can beat Bournemouth. Peterborough aren't very good away from home and they rely on Makhail Smith too much plus they have 3 hard away games in a row coming up.

Brighton have this league sewn up I feel the only thing that can get them is complacency. Huddersfield keep dropping points too with 4 draws out of five.

Bournemouth are on a good run however they've got some hard games coming up on the road too.

What we need to do is to stop worrying about other teams around us and win as many of our games as possible.

4 of their next 5 league games are away: Notts County (A); Carlisle (H); Sheff Wed (A); MK Dons (A); Bristol Rovers (A).

Then they are at home to Bournemouth.

I need to get out more . . .

Good result.. win and clean sheet, cant fault that at a tricky place.

This next week is massive, we have to win at Yeovil, and a week today is gunna be HUGE. If we want 2nd place, then we have to do that something extra and beat the sides pushing for that spot. We've outclassed them twice this season, we should do it again, whether we will or not is the question.

We struggled to get going today and were under a lot of early pressure. Just as I was starting to think this was going to be another no-show from the Saints - they had a sending-off and we go 1-0 up almost straight away!

Adkins sent them out for the 2nd half fired-up and on 50mins, my sphincter-twitching eased with that second goal. Listening to the game - it sounded like we might score a third the way we were playing.

In the end though, a 2-0 win away at a tough place like Colchester was just what the doctor ordered. Everyone at the top won (bar Huddersfield), so it was vital that we stayed in touch with the rest of the chasing pack.

There is no stopping Brighton. They have this division sewn-up this season and good luck to them (*spit). 2nd spot is our prime aim of course - so if we can beat Yeovil at home on tuesday night & hope that Exeter can do us some kind of favour at home to the Cherries the same night - next saturday will be electric along the coast in our game at Bournemouth!

As always with Saints though; it depends on which team will turn up on the day!

Well done today though lads. can't ask for more than 3 points at a place like Colchester. Makes the weekend sweet!

We scored the goal BEFORE the sending off.

I agree with you. Every year we see a team that goes into free-fall and a team that puts together a late run and comes from nowhere. Orient may well be the late-run team and I have a feeling that Bournemouth might hit a bad patch; hopefully it will start next Saturday.

I wish I could be as positive about next Saturday. Bournemouth have everything in their favour, home advantage, points on the board, current form..everything.They will play for a draw unless we gain points on them on Tuesday and I really don't see Exeter troubling them; not now.

Hopefully it'll start on Tuesday. They have a tricky trip to Exeter before they play us. We could quite easily go into the game 3 points behind with 2 in hand. Under these circumstances it'd be more vital for them than us. And even if we lost we'd only be back to where we are now.

Good professional performance. The only time Col looked like they might score was from corners. We looked good in attack and created plenty of near misses. Chamberlain was quality. Chaplow had an excellent second half.

Ref was awful but luckily it worked out ok for us. You could tell he would be awful before the match. Fat and old.

Ah, but I'm positive as in "optimistic" but not positive as in "confident"!

I remember Muhammed Ali saying that if he hit some guy (it might have been Cooper) and he didn't go down, he'd walk round the other side to see what was holding him up. That's how I feel about Bournemouth, and I really admire the way they have refused to fall back on excuses. I wish our lot had their intestinal fortitude - especially as that's what keeps you going through fixture backlogs.

Really important result today, great to get a win but the next two games are huge for us. Win them both and it's all on the cards, lose one and i'd say automatic isn't happening. To be honest i actually think of the two we can afford to drop points against Yeovil but anything but a win against bournemouth will make things very difficult.

Worryingly though i actually can't see us getting anything against the cherries, they've got one of the best home records in the league, haven't lost since the change of manager and will be really up for this.

Still interesting week ahead and pretty exciting too, let's hope the team has enough bottle for it!

It would seem that since losing Howe they've just got better, 22 points from 10 games is a better average than Man U I think.

We did well today as Colchester is a difficult place to go. We don't seem to be able to really take advantage of depleted sides and take them apart, but I'll settle for this result. Bournemouth is a massive game for both clubs next week, a win for either team will put the loser in some difficulty. I think Orient are capable of winning against the top teams especially at home. How is Vancouver? Harry and Adsy are cruising the Caribbean until 10th.

Very pleasing bounceback after Tuesday. Shame so many of our competitors won as well, but our game was one of the toughest in the division, so banana skin avoided.

The top six do now have quite a buffer over the rest.

I still have us as clear favourites to get 2nd...and havent given up on catching Brighton yet....

Excellent result today, Dave, especially there.

There's another type of team I'm on the lookout for, and one seems to turn up every year. It's the "spoiler" - a team not really going anywhere themselves but capable of screwing up teams that are.

Every team will slip but it's just so damned frustrating that we used up one of our lives at Walsall of all places.

Vancouver's great. As I type this I'm watching a cruise ship sail past on its way up to the Alaska coast. Not as warm as Harry and Adsy, though!

Back from the game. Well only watched first half as my son got scared by the thugs behind us in the Cochester family enclosure.

We were not happy with Saints for the first 20 mins. Off the pace and didn't seem up for it. All the quick passing in the warm up went out the window and Lallana was losing the ball far too often. Barnard lead the front well, but there really was no cohesion.

Then enter Chamberlain what a player. Give him the ball and Colchester didn't know what too do. This boy is class. Hammond hit a fantastic cross ball which Chamberlain controlled and then passed the ball past their left back, ran round him and just left him for dead. Quick? the boy is unbelievably quick. sadly he unselfishly passed to Barnard who made a bit of a mess of it.

Once Colchester went down to 10 we became stronger and again from another fantastic run and cross from Chamberlain, Barnard connected wih a great header to the right of the keeper and somehow he got a hand to it and directed onto the crossbar and then it bounced again on the bar and dropped onto the net with Lambert waiting.

I can also remember a ridiculous pass by Jaidi to one of Colchesters midfielders which put us under unnecessary pressure.

Great stadium, but what is the parking all about. We ended up parking 1.5 miles away.

New we would win although I predicted 3-1 not 2-0.

Negative posters please realise we averaged 1.5 points from the last two away games. Better than 2 draws. There will always be downs as well as ups in a season.

Keep your feet on the ground its a roller coaster and Saints will make second. Although we perhaps need Schneiderlin or a replacement soon. The team lacks a cool head in the centre to keep the tempo of the pass and move.

Great day, but worked to be done by Adkins to get this team playing at its best.

Great result, really wasn't confident at all going into this one because of Colchester's great home record. To come away with 3 points from there is a very respectable achievement, as many other teams in the top half of the table have really struggled there this season. I'd like to see Martin start against Yeovil in mid-week, he hasn't had much of a look-in this season and Jaidi needs a rest. If we can pick up 3 points against Yeovil then I would say we're in with a very good chance of coming 2nd this season.

:) I still can't believe they are keeping up this run. Fair play to them with such meagre resources and restrictions on bringing in players. I still believe Bournemouth will collapse at some stage, but I would not put money on it.

Only having the radio to go on, the performance against Walsall sounded exactly what was required (apart from goals), the performance against Colchester sounded exactly the opposite until they had a man sent off. The major concern for me is that the two main strikers are not doing their job and there will always be those games like Walsall that if Ricky or Lee can't do the business, we will suffer eventually. I feel our chances and their ability to score are directly linked to automatic promotion.

These results are so important, because when our strikers decide to join the party, there should be little stopping us.

There is no way they will play for a draw - why would they you have already made every point why they should go all out for it - at home, great form, comfortable where they are, they will be well up for it (having been beaten twice already this season by us).

If anything they will sit back and let us do all the pressuring and hit us on the break because this game will be probably one of our biggest of the season.

Play for a draw - naaaaa, cant see it

I agree but performances give an indication of future performances. It would be good to get a really cracking morale boosting win and performance so we can kick on and turn those disappointing away results into draws and wins.

Results are everything, particularly for some fickle fans. Bizarrely Tuesday's game at Walsall was the game you are asking for, albeit without the landslide scoreline. If we had put the chances away it would have been 4 or 5 nil and not 0-1.

Today we had a poorer game but won. That is football!!

The situation you are asking for is unlikely to happen very often, and is why you as well as some other fans will ultimately always be disappointed.

We all need to enjoy the result today and move on to the next game, and we need to do this every game whatever the result.

For some reason people continue to think that I am disappointed and not enjoying this result, despite having already said a number of times I am happy with the result and that I am continuing to enjoy the win. Both Bournemouth and Brighton have been very consistent this season and Brighton especially have steamrollered a number of teams, something which can only help their team spirit. I was only saying that we could do with some of those performances as it may help our consistency. It's not a criticism just an observation.
