While working-class Left-wing political activism has always been about fighting the powerful, treating people how you would wish to be treated and believing that we're all basically the same, non-working-class Left-wing politics is about... other stuff. Class guilt, sexual kinks, personal prejudice and repressed lust for power. The trades union movement gave us brother Bill Morris and Mrs Desai, heroine of Grunwick. The diversity movement gave us a rainbow coalition of cranks and charlatans.

I'd been brought up to believe that the socialist way was colour-blind, but I quickly became aware that the non-working-class Left operated what was best described as Paint Chart Politics – the further from white, the more likely you were to be right. In the 70s, this would lead to reggae bands who believed stuff about women that would have had them condemned as fascist Neanderthals had they been white playing under the Rock Against Racism flag; in recent years, it has seen the Left support similar Islamist stone-agers just because they're the right (Left) side of beige.

Thus democratic Israel, which gives full civil rights to women and gays, is worse than the countries which surround it, which don't but are darker. (It's always particularly funny to see pasty-faced Western pro-Palestinian activists being bundled into vans by dark-skinned mizrahi IDF, their simple Paint Chart Politics brains trying to take in the fact that Israelis can be brown- and black-skinned too.) Similarly, in Darfur the Left were thrown a curveball when it turned out that the Arab Muslims were terrorising the black Christians. Um, Islam good, Christianity bad – but hang on, Christians darker here! DOES NOT COMPUTE!

I bet La Birchill has some on here choking on their latte's and fuming in their focus group meetings.

Once again Burchill states the blindingly obvious - there are a lot of tw.ats out there. I thought it was pretty clear that condemning Israels human rights abuses was just that, and not excusing the obvious failings of parts of the Palestinian culture and state. If she's really still bothered about "fighting the powerful", why isn't she writing about that? I think the article was probably written out of a misguided attempt to try and remain relevant rather than any sincere feeling.

Burchill has a class-centric chip on her shoulder. The real 'middle class, left of centre' view is that each case needs to be evaluated on it's merits. No-one with half a brain believes in Burchill's half-baked 'paint chart politics' nonsense - it doesn't matter what races or religions are involved, the abused are to be supported, the abusers to be resisted.

Julie Burchill's just doing the job she's done for the last couple of decades, i.e winding people up :)

Her columns are just a long stream of absurdly sweeping generalisations and straw men. Even when she's right you can't help feeling like she's wrong! I can't help liking her, though - somehow you get the impression that she's just having a laugh and would be a good sort in real life, whereas fruitloops like Melanie Philips et. al. seem scarily earnest about the sh*t they spout.

I haven't really worked out yet exactly what she's trying to say but she might as well leave off Israel, the guard dog of the west as it's known in military circles, nothing will ever change there.
