Server Update

Have to agree with hypo on this one and that goes for Steve aswell. I reckon they both seem to think they should be on the executive committee in the sfc board room because they run this sh ite site

Perhaps if you had ponied up a fiver, along with the other freeloaders we could afford an ubercomputer and life would be perfect.

That doesn't fit the theory at all, but in answer to your question I'm doing my best to fill the absence of stu. I would hope that in my absence someone would step up to provide strong opinion that doesn't fit with the mainstream forum opinion. If nothing else it's amusing to watch the same old faces explode with anger and start the swearing and abuse.

Don't pretend you are doing it on purpose just because now you have been outed as a pompous, boring, unlikeable arse.

You were first and foremost an arse, you have been being an arse for years.

In the meantime chaps have you tried memcached?

Also, I've noticed that the avatar images are served every time somebody hits the page, and served from a php page as well which might be an issue, you might want to utilise browser caching to minimise this - something like:

ExpiresActive On

ExpiresByType image/gif "access plus 3 hours"

ExpiresByType image/jpg "access plus 3 hours"

ExpiresByType image/jpeg "access plus 3 hours"

ExpiresByType image/png "access plus 3 hours"

ExpiresByType application/x-javascript "access plus 8 hours"

ExpiresByType application/javascript "access plus 8 hours"

ExpiresByType text/javascript "access plus 8 hours"

ExpiresByType text/css "access plus 8 hours"

in whichever conf file you have might help. I say might as the fact that images are coming from image.php worries me, but as the browser will have cached it I would have thought it would work. It would mean that people changing their avatars might not see it for 8 hours - boo hoo? You *might* want to turn off mod_deflate if your server is CPU bound :). Do you have any server monitoring installed like "xymon". That could help identify the issue (CPU / IO etc.) - it's proved invaluable in the past to me.

Anyway, just trying to be constructive

Latest update: We are now running the site on the new server, with the database remaining on the old one. So far, everything looks a lot quicker and smoother, but the real test will be when there are 700-odd people online at full-time this afternoon. I haven't made any config changes to the "web server" bit of the new server yet, so it's possible there may be some further adjustments needed, but it's difficult to test that without actually being in the real life situation of loads of people adding posts to the database. I've tested concurrent users online with decent success, but the process of writing to the database is much more resource-intensive than reading from it. In short, we'll see how we go this afternoon...

Interesting. Good work. I wonder what Hypochondriac has to say about Baj...

Nothing but high praise, no doubt. Regardless, I'm in Latvia/Estonia this weekend anyway with Lighthouse and LatvianTolix so steve has had to do all this by himself!

The page load speed has been quite variable during the first half (although found loading the match thread much quicker than loading the main board itself), but the speed has really increased at half-time, strangely, when I'd have expected it to grind to a halt with people posting their half-time views.

418 people online at the moment, by the way (329 logged in). Would expect at least 600 around full-time.

Whatever happened to being able to see how many people were viewing each forum? That was always interesting to see.

Been painfully slow to move from page to page over the last 10 or so minutes.

There seems to be no consistency to it, one minute it's lightening quick (like loading this thread just then), the next it'll take 10-15 seconds. Haven't noticed it any slower than that though, and no DB errors, so that's a big step in the right direction.

Have to fully agree with hypochondriac. If you say anything "negative in his eyes" against Barrie Jarman he uses his "power" as a administrator and thinks he can say what he likes and abuse his power and think it is funny. If you dare reply to him he implies that as a administrator he will stop you sing the site.
