Probably the only one that they can get to put up with that old idiot Merrington droning away for 2 hours.

I think he means the generic match highlights rather than the extended ones we sometimes get with the Solent commentary dubbed over the top. The guy on the highlights the OP is talking about probably has to make up some bull crap about every game that the "player" company that runs the website covers. No wonder he sounds disinterested!

I imagine the club will have a license to use that commentary for very specific things (ie Saintsplayer live feed), and will be allowed to use it for those purposes only.

They only do this for home games when they do extended 'all angles covered' highlights, coz there's more time for commo and Dave to discuss the incidents during 4 or 5 replays from different camera angles. I asume this doesn't happen for away games because saints don't have access to multiple cameras. Agreed though, the player commos are awful and it's so clearly not live!

If he was a good commentator then he wouldn't be working for the company that does the highlights for the Player videos and would have been pinched to work elsewhere. Wouldn't it be better to dub the BBC commentary over the video then? Can't be any copyright issues if they are already broadcast during games? They put the BBC Radio Solent commentary over the extended highlight package each week. Rubbish. Everybody has to start somewhere. Also, even if they couldn't find somebody good, somebody vaguely competent who can tell our players apart would be nice.

So someone doing 2 minute website highlights viewed often by a handful of fans for Football League club games, for teams they don't support or follow aren't going to be great in general.
