Colchester Away.

Well according to you and bender, we will lose most of the team if we dont go up, meaning team rebuild next season meaning no promotion next season either. Meaning the 5 year plan is a sitting duck.

Reckon NC would cut his losses and leave if we dont go up this season, and the impact it would have.

A bit unfair. But only a bit.

The 5 year plan is, in my view, a walking, talking duck.

It's not a "sitting duck". A sitting duck strongly implies that others can take an easy potshot and kill you off.

If we fail to get promoted and work our way up the divisions, the fault will be our own.

Frankly, it shouldn't be coming down to an iffy offside decision or a dodgy penalty claim - but either of these things could now cost us dearly.

Southampton should have been on target to secure around 100 points in League One this season. Even if we go up as champions, we will definitely fall short of this points total, which in my view should not have been considered an outrageous target in August.

I would say, however, that as fans we can't have it both ways round.

If Lambert, Schneiderlin, Lallana, Fonte et al are that good, you can be confident that we'll still be promoted, and with room to spare.

If they aren't that good, then why would we really miss them next year?

I think the only thin on anything approaching a knife-edge is whether we get promoted.

If we don't, our present highly paid squad will have failed to deliver and we will need to rebuild. They will have failed and we can't surely claim that we had the best possible squad but it was all Cortese's fault for not holding a fans' forum or whatever....

Most likely thing though is that we go up automatically - probably in 2nd place, but quite possibly in first.

But even if we nick 1st place with, say, 87 points to Brighton's 86, I don't think we should get carried away about next year.

Saints are making very, very hard work over what should have been a very simple task.

Just done the predictor and come up with a pie in the sky figure of 93 points, comfortably in second position. However, a more rational

attempt has us on 84 points, level with Bournemouth. I now consider both attempts as complete rubbish and will just have to wait and

see like the rest of you soothsayers.

This thread has given me such a headache.

What really worries me is one of the mods gets a headache from reading thread on the forum his is a moderator for. If our mods get headaches from reading this forum what would happen if the players read it? Lets hope Lallana, Lambert or Fonte dont read this forum, especially not at the same time, it'll bring on migraines for them and they'll miss loads of games due to it, we are only our players reading this forum away from promotion going up in smoke.

This is actually the truly bizarre post. Cortese/Liebherr's won't walk away if promotion isn't achieved this season. Cortese himself said that the plan can still be done if we don't go up this year.

He also said IF they did, he has alternative funding possibilities. If he was absolutely cast-iron guaranteed certain they won't, he wouldn't have need to have consider alternatives, that much is obvious.

They probably won't walk away but people are very quick to say with 100% certainty what they can't possibly be certain about.

Surely that's just being professional?

I agree that Saints have slightly underperformed on some occasions but fans need to realise we won't win every game and there will be disappointing results. However, saying that I think the team is improving and Lambert is starting to hit top form again, with the squad settling down, now that the transfer window is shut for the season. Unless Saints suddenly start hitting a bad run of form I beleive Saints will finish second unless Brighton 'do a Leeds' and allow us to catch and pass them to win the league.

As for the possibility that the Liebherr family is going to walk away from the club in the next 12 months is truely laughable! They have put a lot of money into the club and are currently revamping the training facilities. People seem to have forgotton this little fact. They may sell once we are back in the Prem as firstly they would no doubt make a profit from the money they have invested in the club and secondly they would have filled Markus Liebherr's original plan of getting the club back to the big time.

Another positive thought I have (shock, horror!) to counter the negative posts, is maybe the family will or are enjoying owning a football club and continue to invest and grow the club over many years to come?
