John Cool Posted 27 February, 2011 Posted 27 February, 2011 The subject of Latin mottos came up on Fighting Talk this weekend and it made me wonder if the Saints have or ever had a Latin motto? Manchester City's motto is "Superbia in proelia" which means "Pride in battle", while Spurs rejoice in the SAS-like exhortation "Audere est facere" or "To dare is to do". Sheffield Wednesday boast of "Consilio et anamis" - which means "intelligence and courage" - while Bristol City share their motto of "Vim promovet insitam" ("Promotes your inner power") with the city's university. Gillingham claim to be the "domus clamantium", or "home of the shouting men". On Fighting Talk, one contestant rattled off an impressive-sounding, lengthy Latin phrase which he said was Stoke City's new motto. He then added that it meant "Bung the ball into the box and hope for the best" :-) My suggestion for Saints is "Camerus nil victorium" which means "we never win on the telly"...
Colinjb Posted 27 February, 2011 Posted 27 February, 2011 Latin mottos. The tool of the pretentious. We don't need one.
CWD Posted 27 February, 2011 Posted 27 February, 2011 There's a Latin word for TV? The Romans really were amazing you know
Saint Posted 27 February, 2011 Posted 27 February, 2011 I never understand clubs that do this. Even more so when it's not even in Latin. For example, Aston Villa's 'Prepared'. Prepared for what? Maybe getting into the Europa League. Oh man that's deep meaning.... Even more bizarre is Peterborough's 'Upon This Rock'. Which I assume was taken from the confession of Peter: 'Upon this rock I will build my church'. Ok....what's the relevance there? Is Peterborough a particularly holy place? On the other hand, I can understand Yeovil's 'Achieve By Unity'. I quite like that one, considering they're one of the fastest rising teams in the FL.

Giordano Posted 28 February, 2011 Posted 28 February, 2011 Excellent idea....must give this some thought....in our 125th year i think something that venerates our roots somehow is in order....something like " Always Saintly" will be easy enough or "Saints Above"...or "Oh To be a Saint"...easy enough online translators...
100%Red&White Posted 28 February, 2011 Posted 28 February, 2011 Now I was never Lowe's greatest fan (to put it mildly) but I did like the one he occasionally trotted out (no, not the "Klingon" one) :- "Respect Everyone, Fear No-one".
benjii Posted 28 February, 2011 Posted 28 February, 2011 Il canine est in horto. Only Latin I can remember from school. Means something like the dog is in the house. Could change it to: Adkinsio est in horto - Adkins is in the house. For house read building... It means "garden".
Crab Lungs Posted 28 February, 2011 Posted 28 February, 2011 "In bus vel in aedificium edificium , nos es captus tutela of res" Or the shorter "Suus ut simplex ut ut"
Window Cleaner Posted 28 February, 2011 Posted 28 February, 2011 "In bus vel in aedificium edificium , nos es captus tutela of res" Or the shorter "Suus ut simplex ut ut" or the even shorter "f*ck pompey" or should that be pompeii
benjii Posted 28 February, 2011 Posted 28 February, 2011 Apparently Portsmouth's is not: Accipere quam facere praestat injuriam
benjii Posted 28 February, 2011 Posted 28 February, 2011 I like these: Ad astra per aspera To the stars through difficulty Crudelius est quam mori semper timere mortem It is more cruel to fear death all the time than to die De inimico non loquaris sed cogites Don't wish ill for your enemy; plan it Me oportet propter praeceptum te nocere I'm going to have to hurt you on principle Post proelia praemia After battles come rewards Ubi concordia, ibi victoria Where there is unity, there is victory (someone probably already has this one) and of course: Clamo, clamatis, omnes clamamus pro glace lactis I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice-cream.
hypochondriac Posted 28 February, 2011 Posted 28 February, 2011 oops! maybe Domus?? Yep! Good few year since I did Latin but I remember that from life of Brian! (Romans go home).

The9 Posted 1 March, 2011 Posted 1 March, 2011 We've already got one on the badge : "Southampton FC".
Badger Posted 1 March, 2011 Posted 1 March, 2011 Taken from FF's post re the book title: "when the moon turns red with blood" ("Cum luna vices sanguine multo rubicunda ") OR "We are traveling in the footsteps Of those who've gone before.." ( Pergimus vestigia De his qui ante Postcommunio))
Hamilton Saint Posted 1 March, 2011 Posted 1 March, 2011 We've already got one on the badge : "Southampton FC". That's the name of the club. It's not a motto; and it's not in Latin.
