Saints v Walsall build-up

Schneiderlin is a much better defensive midfielder than Fonte ever would be. Fonte doesn't have the range of passing required for the job.

Fonte, is mobile, a good tackler, reads the game well, used as a midfielder good in the air, breaks forward aggressively and has scored four goals this season. Schneiderlin on the other hand, can't tackle and apart from being a possession passer does little else except collect more bookings than anyone else with mistimed tackles. With Fonte, Lallana, as now the best footballer in the team, would have the freedom to play expansively and reinforce the front two with pace out wide. As I said hypothetical because Fonte will be first choice at the back and unlike Adkins I have the luxury of thinking outside the box. As for Schneiderlin, unlike Lallana he is no better now than the day he arrived and is totally one dimensional. He passes the ball and that is it, unfortunately most of the passes are just unloaded sideways or backwards eventually to Davis. Unless he adds more to his game he will continue to be a third rater which is where we are.

Schneiderlin on the other hand, can't tackle.

I think you are very wrong there! Schneiderlin is becoming a very good ball winner and his tackling is good. Hence why he plays in the holding role for France and Saints.

A few Saints fans seem to think Schneiderlin doesn't tackle well (maybe they are imposing national stereotypes on him), however they clearly haven't been watching him closely as he breaks up a hell of a lot of opposition attacks when he plays!

If that's what you want to think, fine.

Why would he be chosen to play as a holding midfielder by Pardew, Adkins and numerous managers in the French national setup if he couldn't tackle? I think you need to watch how he plays a little more carefully, he is good in the tackle.

I think it is a waste of time discussing this with you.

I don't understand how anyone can say Schneiderlin is poor as a holding midfielder. He can tackle well and is great at doing it whilst retaining possession. I've lost count of the times he's broken up an attack by picking their pocket and then starting an attack of our own.

Until Schneiderlin came on Saints were clueless and had conceded the centre to Swindon. Morgan sees the bigger picture and spreads the ball around quite successfully. It is remarkable that you have not noticed his improving, maturing strength and confidence, not least his positive tackling where it matters. It would be great if he added goalscoring to his qualities, and he will improve in this respect, but he does not need to score if he provides the fluency for others to get into scoring positions, which is why we ended up 4-1 winners. For me, I haven't seen enough of Fonte to comment, but have not been over-impressed so far.

Not over-impressed with Fonte or Forte? They are two different players

Anyone know what state their pitch is in? Hopefully like a bowling green but I very much doubt it.

just had a look at the highlights of walsall v rochdale

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_div_2/9408985.stm

and their pitch doesn't look too bad at all compared to many in our division. Still got plenty of grass, relatively even, so should suit our "brighton style" () passing game!

I've got a good feeling about this one - better than 3-0 me thinks (or hopes)

He can tackle and has been immense in the holding role when I've seen him.

Morgan is quality. End of.

You can say that again.

I think maybe what others are judging him on are the occassional late challenges that inevitably and deservingly gets a yellow card. When he is late, he is sooooo late!

This is a massive game as far as I'm concerned. Win it and we're 3 behind Boscombe with 2 games in hand and a better goal difference, and above PBoro and Hudders and still a game in hand. If we win tomorrow a draw at Boscombe will be quite a good result, lose tomorrow and Boscombe starts looking "make or break".We also need to ramp up the pressure on Brighton, being caught up by one side is one thing, but the presure increases if it's the autos you could blow, rather than just the title.

Midfielders get cards, Deano has 8,Chappers 5 and Morgan 6. I have seen them get cards because they just have no other option,

it happens,if a midfielder commits a deliberate professional foul he'll get a yellow because there are no doubt defenders somewhere behind him, if a defender does it it will just as likely be a straight red.Fouls and cards are unfortunately part of the modern game. Show me a team whose midfielders don't get cards and I'll show you a bunch of losers.

All of these games are starting to feel massive now. This will only help whip the Saints fans into a frenzy, some cracking games and atmospheres coming up I feel. I only wish I could attend more of the games! I'd start with morgan and hammond in the middle, Lambert and Guly up front, with Barnie coming on at HT if Gools is looking useless, dont think he has done enough to warrant being dropped from the start.

He's faster, stronger, fitter, better on the ball and stronger in the tackle. In my eyes he's a similar player to Alex Song at Arsenal. At 21 he also didn't score or set up goals but was continually selected by Wenger, who knows a thing or two. Two years on and he's finally added a few goals and assists to his strong passing game. I expect Morgan to do the same. Once again, Morgan is 21 and it is imperative that we get him signed to a long term contract as he is a tremendous talent.

A gate of just 3,830 for a Saturday game (ground capacity = 11,300).....

Yet more reason why we need to get out of this ditchwater league ASAP

How do they pay their bills and salaries on gates like that.Net income must be about £60,000 every 2 weeks.30K a week for a 20 man playing squad must eat that up straight away.

Agree with this. Morgan ran the midfield against Scholes, Gibson and Anderson for an hour until Giggs came on.

If by some miracle we keep Chamberlain, we're only missing 1 player from a brilliant midfield IMO.

Lallana, Schneiderlin and Chamberlain all have great ability and have used to playing together. The key investment should be a player of similar quality to compliment them. So a strong central midfield leader who can grab a goal. Not something that's readily available I expect. Kind of a cheap version Scott Parker I guess.

All three are U-21 internationals so they should be bloody good! As you say one more... Jack Willshire?

No problem.

You'll be parked up by 18.30(ish)

Leaving Southampton at 16:15 in Walsall at 18:30ish that will be very impressive Hope you have stealth capabilities as an option on your car!! Oxford at 17:15 what joy. M6/M5 junction backing up from about midday.

I live in Basingstoke so a bit of a head start, I have a bad habit of not hanging around on the open road Junction 1 on the M5 (a regular destination) in 2 hours is a bit of a result.

Am looking forward to this tomorrow night as it will be my first game back since the Carlisle home game as the Rochdale game was called off and I've been away in Norway for 6 days which was Pretty Good so will be Good to be back watching Saints again and fingers crossed win and come away with all 3 points!

I already have a ticket for the game as I got one for the original one so I take it you can use the same one then?!

Also what Pubs are people heading to before the game as I'm thinking of grabbing a drink before maybe depending on when the coach gets in ;)?!

Thanks!

Am going for 3-0 Saints at least with the scorers being Rickie (2!) and maybe Barnard/Chaplow but we will see!

COYR :D!!

Well done BennyDan. You have surpassed yourself with that 1st sentence -61 words without a comma or fullstop in sight - awesome - even if i did nearly faint trying to read it all in one go!!! :toppa:

I hope you are right about the score, but we will have to wait and see!!

Is COYR the new UTS? ;)

Indeed, Hammond is not Championship quality, Lee Bowyer is free at the end of the season, a one year deal for him would do nicely.

Bit of a harumph. Was supposed to come back for work this week and had a road trip on the radar..

Then found out that it was Half Term in Europe and not a bloody chance of a flight back until late today. Oh well grumble groan will have to try and make it back in a couple of weeks.

Another late night on the innernet then, hope we remember to turn up for the first half, we've tended to forget how to come out and play from the off from time to time. These games are as we all say massive now and we need to get our run of away games off with a bang.

The right attitude & performance should secure the three points. Interesting their's quiite a few differences from the team that beat them 3-1 last season at there place. Team was: Bart, Murty, Harding, Jaidi, Perry, Hammond, Schneiderlin, James, Lallana, Lambert, Connolly.

On paper our current team is alot better.

'Twas half term in 'Ampshire last week guvnor

Hence all the flights to Uk from here this weekend full of visiting ankle biters and families returning home in time for school.

Luckily I'm well up for this one - not working tomorrow - so no probs knocking back the Old speckys to 0200 and beyond. (Where's all the beer guzzling / partying smileys gone FFS?)

First time I've been able to be charmed by the dulcet tones of Merry Dave for absolutely ages because of work and also a short visit to Uk during which I saw the Notts County game which wasn't brilliant but obviously better than being stuck out here listening to the innernet and reading Alpines words of wisdom on here and posting all sorts of witty crap myself and hoping that Saints Player doesn't screw up or that this forum doesn't go mammaries up the moment anything remotely exciting happens which means we aren't supposed to post piccys of camel toes or nuns in sexy lingerie anymore which is a big shame and could have serious consequences on the outcome of the game unless ohio saint goes out for a crafty fag or somebody else takes a tactically timed dump to swing the game back into our favour but hopefully we won't need any of that tonight as we storm to victory but we will have to wait and see :scared:

UTS

Stick that up you pipe Danny ...... 170 words and no punctuation - whose the daddy now then :poundit:

Great idea - get all the travelling fans to do an Argentina stylee ticker tape welcome as the players come out and cover the grass with paper - Walsall won't stand a chance :D
