Good film, maybe not the best but certainly very good. Sting as the 'head mod' made me lol. Hate watching a film on a terrestrial channel though because of the adverts.. Film 4 (I think) showed Aliens around Christmas and they put an ad break right in the most inopportune place in the bit at the end with the amazing chase scene. Really puts me off watching a film.

I'm just about to watch True Romance, that's an awesome film.

Quadrophenia was ok, but not that great imho. For the best films ever made you should be looking at dr strangelove, network, duck soup, the graduate, etc etc....

Watched that the other day. The dialogue (especially the monologues) was excellent, but the ending really put me off the film. It just spoiled the whole film for me, seemed completely far-fetched to come to that conclusion and then to do it on live tv...

This post made me think about doing extremely violent things to your face. Please stop doing this.

Thanks.

You're just wrong on this. Network is as strangely relevant today as when it was made 35 years ago, and the ending is no more crazy, in a way, than what precedes it.

So you don't think that continuing to give air-time to someone who is clearly having an emotional breakdown isn't far-fetched in itself?

I agree with Verbal. The film is probably even more relevant today than when it was released. The part where Howard goes into one of his rants about turning off the TV because you can't trust it as your sole source of truth in the world; he could have been talking about Fox News and the rise of the Murdoch empire.

I didn't think them giving him air-time was that far-fetched, after all he was turning the network's fortunes around and making them money. And during his TV rants I drew a lot of parallels between what Howard said and the current US TV situation with Fox et al. spreading their paranoid messages of terrorism, immigration, crime etc. I thought the film was excellent right up until the scene where they're debating his use in the network head's office, and then they come to the conclusion to kill him...? I understand people get boffed all the time in the world, but surely not on live tv? I still think it was excellently written aside from that last 5 minutes or so, it just seemed to me like the writer had spent months constructing all these fantastic speeches (the corporate cosmology one being my favourite) and then had to rush to think of an ending just before the deadline...

I think you'd make a great film director or screen writer Super Mikey. You have all the characteristics of one. Sharp, intellegent, creative, witty etc. With your incredible intellegence and knowledge of everything no bridge would be too far for you. You wouldn't create this bizare films about made up worlds. You'd do real films for real people, cutting edge dramas which are a rollercoaster ride of emotion, gritty yet charming, hilarious yet moving. You would take film making to another level, stretching the envelope, you would stand shoudler to shoulder with Lee, Scorcse, Tarantino etc and "step aside you lot, get out of the photo shot, SuperMikey is all we are interested in"

Thanks Turkish, it means a lot to me to know that you care and believe in me. Maybe you could be my executive producer for my re-imagining of the behind-the-scenes story of SWF? You could help with casting too.

Who would play you? It would have to be someone young and cool, fantastically intellegent but in a cool way. Someone that women want and men want to be, Prehaps Johnny Depp or Brad Pitt?

Still not got round to me, I was thinking we could get Jim Davidson for Dune, Gary Oldman for Baj (sorry Baj) and I was thinking along the lines of Jonathan Rhys Meyers for you Turkish?

He'd do, although possibly Christian Bale, Jason Statham or Ed Norton are a good fit. Although i am prone to bursts of anger so Joe Pesci tends to play those sort of characters well. Dune would have to be Russell Crowe, a great fit after his role in Romper Stomper.

Kids --------------------------- Toy Story, ET

War ---------------------------- Saving Private Ryan (if just for the opening sequence) , Any of the Vietnam era, The Longest Day, Bridge over the River Kwai

Sci Fi -------------------------- Close Encounters, Star Wars, 2001 A Space Oddysey (sp?)

dr strangelove was imho kubrick's finest, followed closely by The Killing.

how did he sink to the depths of eyes wide shut? ffs

I don't think eyes wide shut Is that bad. As with all kuberick films, it was appreciated more as time goes on. Ahead of his time and a genius. I liked dr strangelove but I can't say it was my favourite one. I like how as a director though he is t afraid to be challenging and doesn't patronise the audience.

Comedy

Airplane/Holy Grail/Big Lebowski/Clerks

Action/Adventure

Lord of the Rings Trilogy/Indiana Jones Trilogy (not the 4th)/Pulp Fiction/Reservoir Dogs/Kill Bill

Drama

Shawshank/Cuckoo's Nest/Godfather/Schindler's List

Animated

Up/Toy Story Trilogy/The Incredibles

Kids

Toy Story/Up/The Incredibles/E.T.

War

Das Boot/Apocalypse Now/Full Metal Jacket/Inglorious Basterds

Sci Fi

Star Wars Trilogy/Alien Trilogy/Blade Runner

Horror

Psycho/Shining/Romero's 'Dead' Trilogy (Night, Dawn, Day)/Evil Dead I and II

Speaking of films, has anyone seen The Room? It's hilariously bad, it's got a huge cult following in the US and screenings will sell out in hours of going on sale! There are roughly 5 sex scenes within the first 20 minutes of the film as well (it's not a porno).

There are so many films I could have put on the list, but Blues Brothers and Green Mile are 2 of my favourites.

You missed Goonies out of the kids section which surprises me as there is a Mikey in it, although you remind me more of Mouth.

Life of Brian is greatest comedy and full metal jacket (or apocalypse now) the greatest war film. Don't make me laugh with saving private Ryan.

How could I forget about Life of Brian!

I agree saving private ryan isn't a great film, but the first 5 minutes are the most realistic war action you'll ever see as attested to by D-day landing vets.
