The difference between Southampton and Brighton...

Sorry to say that Brighton do not have a BETTER squad. They may have a more balanced, committed, hungry, fit, well-coached side for sure. What that sadly says is that Adkins and his coaching team are not making an impression on the players. Something is not working. Someone needs to sort it out - I hope that man is Adkins because if it has to be NC we might be seeing a new Manager prematurely.

Adkins is blessed with arguably the best squad in this league, many would dream having the players we have to call upon.

Adkins is not fulfilling his remit.

We are underperforming and not making progress, especially in the playing style, the style that so many championed that Adkins' sides play.

I'm sure the stat man will be out in a mo,but you are easily pleased if you are happy with the dross being served up.

How many of those Brighton players would you want in our team? - and who would they replace?

As long as we end up in the top 2 I don't give a rats arse about Brighton. I know which team I would back in the Championship next year (well, I'd back Saints over Brighton any time and any league, but that's just blind faith...lol).

I don't believe they have a better manager either. Out of curiosity, any idea how the table would look if you just took the results since Adkins became Manager?

Manager and squad. BHA signing Craig Noone showed more ambition than Saints' signing Forte and taking N'Guessen on loan. Result was BHA are stronger after the window while Saints are same old same old.

Adkins going back to his old club for Forte smacked too much of Burley and his tendency to sign players he'd managed before.

Consistency of performance. They either win well or grind out results. We do a bit of both but throw in a few stinkers too.

We play in fits and starts.

4 wins in a row followed by stinking results, a 6-0 followed by a 0-0 or a loss etc.

I hate to say it, but its the kind of form that usually separates automatic promotion teams and play off teams. I honestly thought we'd take the **** in this league this year, we couldn't really have a better opportunity. I cannot understand our inconsistency at all.

Let's hope we can go on a real run in the final few months.

HOw can you judge them after playing twenty minutes and 140 minutes of football for us?

That Brighton are a lot more consistent, probably have more desire and definately had a better pre-season/summer than Saints! Oh and that stability on the pitch, keeping a manager and building a team from one season to the next are all keys to success!

we have a good squad but I doubt other teams "dream" about having our players

Too true. Hopeless loans.

Another 2 points dropped, it annoys me sooo much with the team we have we should beating teams like this week in week out but we cant so there is defo something wrong somewhere. Yes we went on a good winning streak scoring a sh!t load of goals but at the end of the season that counts to nothing if we dont go up. I wouldnt count on winning the promotion playoffs either, it only takes one silly tackle to lose the game. A win tonight with Bournemouth and Huddersfield drawing would of of been a real bonus and with us having games in hand isnt a good sign, we'll have to play alot of games very close together. For me Hammond needed to be dropped i still think Chappers and Morgan is our best CM partnership i also think we should play Barnard instead of Guly for away games, Guly does seem play alot better when we're at home. Going back to what the OP is saying, Brighton do have a good side who can play together whatever way they are being told by the manager, they might change tactics depending who they are playing while NA always wants to play this passing style which in my view looks nice but does not always work, id rather see us win by playing a scappy game than seeing us drew or lose but playing really nice football. The passing type of game works well at most premier grounds because they are all nice playing surfaces for that type of game the lower leagues (apart from a few selected grounds ie old prem clubs) have crappy surfaces and smaller pitches so NA needs to start changing tactics depending who we play.

At this moment in time Brighton have a manager that is getting the best out of a average team, where adkins is not getting the best out of a supposedly better team............

A [paraphrased] quote from Our Lord Gus, early in the season - 'If I couldn't get Southampton promoted, I'd give my salary back'

'Average' team? Ho - and indeed - ho. GOSBTS.

I can't wait to revisit this thread in May, when I sincerely believe a lot of the bed-wetters and wrist-slitters on here will be shame-faced and embarrassed at their ability to wave the white flag in February. Still, if it comes to it, at least we can count on your support at the play off final....

We did have a poor start to the season, and we maybe up with them since the first 10 games, but Brighton are smashing everyone at the moment and looking very comfortable and I cannot see them slipping up. Still think 2nd is ours for the taken and do think on this ocassion we will take it with both hands on the run in. The big turning point will be us winning at Dean Court! IMO.

I think the big difference is expectation, Brighton are perennial inhabitants of this league and rock up to their games against teams who just see them as Brighton. We are seen as Billy Big Bo//ocks, lots of money, big shiney stadium, good players, we are the Manchester United (for want of a better analogy) of this league: the team to beat. When you look at the Bournemouth fans celebrations at Burton Albion when they were promoted last season all they could sing about was coming to SMS. Look at the Notts County fans after the 0-0 the other week, at the final whistle you would have thought that they had won. Every game we play in is viewed by the opposition as a cup tie against a premiership side, if not the final.

As for NA he is not a bad coach by any stretch of the imagination, when you look at what he did at Scunny on more than one occasion without the means both in finance and playing staff as he has here He just has to work out how to get the players to unlock these pumped up teams early on in a game.

Sure to get lambasted for this but I still reckon we have a chance to win the league.

Brighton have to slip up sometime - It's happened before.

If we can get another winning run on the go at the same time then it's entirely possible.

Thought I'd post this in hope that come May I can say I told you so...

No-one will remember if it doesn't happen... No-one knows me anyway.

Livin' the dream.

Except the ones who bother to look at the league table before kick off.

No way would I want to lambast you, but Brighton are currently 10 points ahead of us, we never managed to make up the -10 points last season, therefore it is highly unlikely that we are now going to do it over the course of the last quarter. If you are a betting man, I would advise you to keep your money in your pocket as opposed to going on your hunch - you will lose.

I did say 'we have a chance' rather than 'I think we will' (which I accept is gutless).

Just an optimist I guess. Just checked the odds - they aren't great. Only 3-1. I'll wait til its 5-1 then blow my savings.

don't panic..more than 1/3 of a season left, not a 1/4 ;)

...we will be in higher division in 3 years time

I would wager that we will both be in The Championship in 3 years time.

Brighton will have consolidated with their new ground providing them with a lift. If we go up this season, then I think we will take more than 3 years to make the next jump as i think the Championship and a number of yo-yo teams with big parachute payments will make it a massive challenge to get in to the top flight.
