Islander Posted 22 February, 2011 Share Posted 22 February, 2011 Good article - I'd forgotten or not heard of some of them! When you list them all it doesn't seem so bad but it would be nice for youngsters to get better opportunities here. The line about Jamie Lawrence made me laugh - I don't think we can claim him as an Islander!!
Eastcowzer Posted 22 February, 2011 Share Posted 22 February, 2011 to G.W's.Cuz'. Well compiled arcticle. Did'nt realise Gary Rowett was from these parts. and you also could have mentioned two current Islanders who feature in Premier League Referees, Lee Probert and John Linnington, - and I'm not sure if there is one other. One former Ref' from the IOW was Malcolm Sinclair, wwho's parents kept the pub' at the bottom of the High Street, Newport, near the old Coppins Bridge, the name of which escapes me at the moment. Of course one should not forget Roy Shiner who played for Sheff' Wednesday in the '50's and 60's. He originated in the East Wight.
georgeweahscousin Posted 22 February, 2011 Author Share Posted 22 February, 2011 Cheers fellas. Gary Rowett wasn't really an Islander, but did attend Cowes high in his teens. Good point on the refs. Maybe I will do a follow up article!
georgeweahscousin Posted 22 February, 2011 Author Share Posted 22 February, 2011 Been really interesting doing this blog. Wasn't aware of Shiner, so thanks for that, and been pointed out by a mate, that former Villa midfielder Gareth Williams was from the Island. Also ashamed to admit, I didn't realise our own Aaron Martin was too!

Three more for your album Wesley Maugham, (from Cowes) and Wayne Talkes, (Brading), both appeared for Saints, and Jimmy Watts, from Cowes, played for Gillingham, at The Dell. Gareth Williams is now the Manager at Matlock Town. in Derbyshire. Yet another member of the East Cowes Vic's 'School of Excellence'.
Guest Dark Sotonic Mills Posted 23 February, 2011 Share Posted 23 February, 2011 There's a reason that there aren't many professional footballers from the Isle of Wight; it must be difficult playing with webbed feet.

Kingsland Codger Posted 27 April, 2011 Share Posted 27 April, 2011 Another one for you - I don't think I have spotted his name in your articles. Keith Allen played for Luton - mid 60s and early 70s.
